Summary: Excellent Documentary
Review: A must-have for any comic book fan! Kevin Smith is in the interviewer's chair and does a great job of interviewing the ultimate comics man. Stan Lee tells his life story focusing on the creation of Spiderman and the other super-heroes he created during the 60's as well as some of the controversial moments such as when an issue of Spiderman was published without the seal of the Comics Code.
Additional features include an interview with Stan's wife.

Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters & Marvels is a real treat for anyone (Like ME!) who grew up reading Stan Lee's comic books and hilarious Bullpen Bulletins columns. Lee is, of course, the co-creator of some of the most famous literary characters of all time: The X-Men, Spider-Man, The Hulk....The list goes on and on. He's interviewed here by Filmmaker (And a talented comic writer in his own right!) Kevin Smith. They cover virtually every topic any "Friend of 'ol Marvel" could imagine, and Lee & Smith provide some great anecdotes and laughs along the way. The DVD has some great extras, including a looong poem by Stan, some of his home movies, a tour of his house, and his (Brief!) explanation of the ill-fated "Fantastic Four" movie.

Summary: Surprisingly Good Documentary
Review: I must make it clear that I know and care very little about comic books, and in fact I have always preferred DC Comics to Marvel. Yet it takes some skill to make someone like me interested in both comics and Marvel for the duration of this documentary. In the documentary, filmmaker Kevin Smith ("Clerks," "Mallrats," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back") interviews a surprisingly and unusually modest Stan Lee about his history in comics, the creation of Spider-Man, movie adaptations, and more. It's all unusually interesting.
There are also some good bonus features on this DVD. There are biographies, a making-of featurette, an interview with Stan Lee's wife, home movie footage, and best of all, an interview with Stan Lee about the unreleased "Fantastic Four" movie.
It's presented in widescreen (1.85:1) an the image quality is as good as it should be. No more, no less.

Summary: Lee and Smith sound like hypocrits....
Review: I really laughed when I saw this film. Lee sounds like the guy who created all the characters and only briefly mentions the artists who helped him with the work (Years ago, Stan said more about the artists then he does today), and to have Smith do the interviews. A guy who makes terrible movies and never turns comic book scripts in on time when he's supposed too. Please. Talk about finding the worst guy to do the interviews here. No wonder the comic book industry is dying. Heck, it's dead already.

Summary: Stan Lee's: Mutants is a Must-See
Review: I recently purchased "Stan Lee's: Mutants, Monsters and Marvels," in which filmmaker Kevin Smith interviews comic book legend Stan Lee. This awesome DVD gave me an opportunity to learn more about the man behind such comic books as: Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, X-Men and Daredevil. This is the most definiitive thing out there, as well as, a must-see for all comic book fans. The chemistry between the two is visible from the first few minutes - by Smith's incredible knowledge of the subject. After seeing Spiderman in the theaters and with all the blockbuster comic book movies coming out over the next few years, I wanted a little more - and this definitley delivered.

Summary: Unfortunately nothing special
Review: I'm a big fan of Stan Lee and his comic creations. This interview covers stories about Stan and the early days of Marvel comics that have been told many times before. (In fact one of the more interesting stories -- Stan's creative breakup with Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko -- is not covered at all). There are also a few strange inaccuracies. Interviewer Kevin Smith remarks that when the Gwen Stacy character died in the Spider-Man comic she "stayed dead". (An odd comment since Gwen Stacy was brought back as a clone AND is featured in the current "Ultimate Spider-Man" title). Another disappointing thing about the disc is the frequent mentions of the Spider-Man movie. It makes the whole thing seem like somewhat of an infomercial for Marvel movie properties. Also, don't be fooled by the DVD extra -- "the never released Fantastic Four movie", its just Stan talking about the film, there are no clips. All in all, its not bad, but Stan deserves better.

Summary: Insight and Entertainment
Review: I've been reading superhero comics since I was nine years old, and Spider-Man was my first. Having a chance to see Kevin Smith -- whom I currently regard as one of the most talented writers on the planet -- sit down and discuss the creation of the webslinger with one of his "fathers" was absolutely wonderful.I've heard a lot of Stan's stories before -- in books, in interviews, at comic conventions -- but they never get old. The energy and enthusiasm this man has for his creations, even at an old age, is really remarkable. The DVD is divided up into two shorter films -- "Creating Spider-Man" (obviously about Spider-Man himself but also with tidbits about the new movie) and "Here Come the Heroes" (in which Stan gives the rest of the Marvel Universe its due). Stan speaks with such respect for the artists he's worked with, the other writers, his Distinguished Competition and even his interviewer that it's impossible not to get pulled right in. There aren't many extras on this disc and one has to wonder why some (such as the 90-second or so clip discussing the ill-fated "Fantastic Four" movie) weren't simply cut into the documentary itself, but the 7-minute interview with Stan's wife is worth it. Anyone who's ever loved a Marvel comic should check this DVD out.
