Rating: Summary: What Does It Take? Review: For most of this documentary, the question arises of just what does it take to win an endurance contest. Can a woman do it? A kid. An older guy? It is always in doubt as the trials and tribulations are shared through ongoing interviews.Whether you'd ever want to try something like this or just enjoy learning about those who do, this film creates a lot of insight amid the dreariness of sleepless nights and hot days and is a real lesson in life.
Rating: Summary: praise the lord Review: god bless texas. god bless the jesus freak convinced that truck is hers. god bless the couple with three teeth. god bless pick-up trucks and industrial A/C. this here film is a gem. if you're not laughing, there's something wrong with you.
Rating: Summary: you can do things with a truck Review: high comedy - I was first introduced to this doc this summer in NYC. A friend of mine going to school at UT had a "Texas cultural night" and played Hands on a Hard Body. I LOVED IT! My brother purchased the dvd and now we show everyone we know. Nothing I can say can convey how great this show is. You will walk away quoting the contestants and their take on the contest and watch and re-watch your favorite scenes. If you don't have any exposure to small town people you may have trouble understanding that these are real people and you can learn a lot from them. Mostly that "only one can survive."
Rating: Summary: Definitely not entertainment Review: I had bought this documentary after reading the other reviewers comments about how good it is, but I could hardly drag myself through the whole hour and half of watching people standing and their philosophy on standing.I am not sure whether it is some kind of cultural divide between Texas and Chicago or it is something that I did not understand. I and my friends watched the movie together, and at the end of it we were depressed at having lost one and half hours and mystified as to how any body could laugh at it.
Rating: Summary: OH MY GOD.....THIS IS CLASSIC! Review: I just gave this to my husband for Christmas...sort of a gag gift...and we think it is hilarious!!! Being from Tyler, Texas we thought we'd relate to these folks a little bit....but when we watched it, the contestants seemed more likely to be from Mississippi or Louisiana than from Texas!! I hope that non-Texans who watch this do not think that all East Texans are like these people!! This definitely is a "human drama" at the funniest level! The contestants physically and mentally torture themselves for days to win that truck, and you do feel sorry for the ones who don't make it to the finish. This contest is sort of a precursor to the reality t.v. show "Survivor", though the prize is worth far less! I'd say the star of this movie is Benny, and the experience and wisdom that he shares with his fellow contestants are really "life lessons" that we could all benefit from in our own lives!!!
Rating: Summary: "It's a human drama." Review: I love my people. This film is a pure slice of Texas at our best (some may say our worst). Round up a bunch of East Texans and put the hope of a free truck in their hearts -- then just sit back and watch. Hysterical. Truly hysterical. And I am pretty sure that even those not blessed to be from Texas will appreciate the humor. If not, at least you will enjoy sitting back and laughing at this great cast of real-life characters. Now, I sure could use an orange or a Snickers . . .
Rating: Summary: So incredibly funny Review: I originally saw this movie in Austin and almost fell out of my seat on several occasions from laughing so hard. Truly Texas. You can't miss this one!
Rating: Summary: Hilariously funny Review: I saw this film recently at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival. It was the hit of the show. The audience, including me, was in hysterics for much of the film. Now, this could have something to do with the fact that we Arkansans just love to laugh at Texans (and this film gives us plenty of fodder!), but it was much more than that of course. It was truly an extremely funny, and touching, film. By the end you have come to feel so much empathy for these people that you hate to see any of them drop out. A wonderful subject for a documentary film and a masterful job by the director.
Rating: Summary: A must-have for Texans Review: I was initially suspicious when I read the Austin Chronicle's review that called this movie one of the best of the year. But after seeing it, I agree 100 percent. You'll laugh so much that you'll be surprised the story is touching -- and it hits close to home. We all know someone who's wanted a truck this badly. It's a must-see for Texans and anyone who's a nonbeliever.
Rating: Summary: Best Documentary ever? Review: I was so surprised when I watched this movie. It has a great plot and the end is a real surprise. I believe that this film very much shows how good documentaries are made. Eventhough the filmmakers dont interfere so much in the film it is still interesting. Others film made in this style tend to be really boring.("Startup.com" and "In the war room") As a foreigner it is also very funny to see these American stereotypes in the competetion and I don't know how Americans feel about this movie but to me it is one of the great masterpieces in its genre.
