Summary: One of Carpenter and Russell's best!
Review: I thought this was a good movie, but it's not as good as the original. The only thing I did not like is the computer generated sequences because they look so fake. I was disappointed that the dvd had no other special features, just the trailer. If anyone's a fan of John Carpenter or Kurt Russell as I am, this is the film to have.

Summary: Snaaaakkkeeeee Plissssssskeeeen
Review: Kurt Russell reprises his 12 year departure role as Snake Plissken who is captured and brought to LA for a little assignment, sorta like the original with Plissken going into LA and bringing someone out, he saved the president in the first one and now he has to save the new presidents daughter in this one. so he goes with a virus in him to LA. wonderful disasters in the streets with cool music and far out characters, especially a weird role by Bruce Campbell(Evil Dead 1&2, Army Of Darkness) as the surgeon. Russell also plays a little bit of basketball, funner from the first one which was good also.

Summary: God Awful Film, Stick With Escape From NY....
Review: There aren't enough negative words in the English language to adequately describe this film. If you want to see how a lousy sequel mars the image of a great original, look no further.

What was John Carpenter thinking when he made this stinker? Not to mention what was Kurt Russel thinking when he read the script...and agreed to star in it!

The plot is a pathetic retread of Escape from NY. Every notable plot device from the original is copied here, and copied poorly. The special effects look like they were done by a novice Apple II user and look extremely phony.

Skip this waste of celluloid and stick with "Escape From N.Y." You won't be sorry.

Summary: IT TOOK 15 YEARS FOR KURT RUSSELL TO REPRISE THIS ROLE
Review: THIS TIME, SNAKE PLISSKEN RETURNS TO RETRIEVE A BLACK BOX THAT HAS A DETONATION DEVICE. THIS SEQUEL IS MORE OF A REMAKE. IF YOU PAY ATTENTION, YOU'LL REALIZE THAT A LOT OF THE STUFF THAT HAPPENED HERE IS SIMILAR TO THE STUFF THAT HAPPENED IN ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. A GOOD ACTION PICTURE THAT HAS SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES. IF YOU LIKE KURT RUSSELL OR IF YOU JUST LIKE A SHOOT EM UP BANG BANG ACTION MOVIE, THIS IS THE MOVIE FOR YOU. BUT FOR EVEN BETTER RESULTS, CHECK OUT ITS ORIGINAL FILM, ''ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK''.

Summary: Snake is back, sort of...
Review: I loved Escape From New York, so I really looked forward to this movie when it came out in theaters in 1996. As much as I wanted to like it, it was really difficult. The movie starts off with a history lesson, telling us there was a big earthquake and how LA separated from the mainland. We also learn that the island of LA has now become a place where America dumps all it's undesirables, based on highly restrictive laws implemented by the ruling, ultra right wing political regime.

The setup is the president's daughter, Utopia, played by A.J. Langer, has befriended the leader of the biggest gang on LA island, and has she has stolen a device that would allow someone to utilize satellites in orbit to activate a sort of electro magnetic pulse that would wipe out all electronic devices in an area essentially throwing that area back into the stone age. Snake has recently been captured for whatever crimes he has since committed, and is given the option of going in, retrieving the device and his record will be wiped clean. I say he is given the option of going in, but he's infected with a sort of neurotoxin, and has no choice but to go on the mission, so he gears up and goes off to retrieve said device. He encounters different individuals and groups, and eventually meets up with the head of the largest and most powerful gang named Cuervo Jones. He's taken prisoner and made do to do some rather silly things. In the first movie, he has to fight a death match with a big bruiser, while in this movie he's forced to play a full court basketball shoot out, and if he misses, he gets shot. The rest of the movie is a little on the goofy side, but kind of fun to watch.

I was disappointed in this movie because, while it pretty much followed the same concept of the original movie, it couldn't keep the same feel as the first. There was way too much satire, too much blatant parody for my taste. From the cult of plastic surgery, to the constant remarks people made on actually meeting Snake that they thought he would be bigger, it seemed ham fisted and forced. Also, a few references were made to how he may have escaped New York, but LA would eat him alive, but I got the feeling New York still would have been harder to survive. The original was made on a small budget, so they had to be creative, improvise in some areas, and that ended up paying off. This movie was obviously made on a larger budget, as the use of somewhat cheesy special effects is more present, but the charm and ingenuity from the first doesn't really carry over. It seemed to me that most all the actors were more interested in picking up a check. The flow of the story was pretty sporadic, with characters and situations thrown in just for the heck of it. Escape From LA follows a similar story line as Escape From New York, but maintains very little of it's sense of danger, grittiness, and sense of flowing action and purpose. Escape From LA was a fun movie, but don't expect too much from it as a true sequel to the original movie.

Summary: dissapointment
Review: I give this movie 2 stars. One star is for the soundtrack, which I can't help but like, and the other star is for Kurt Russel wearing the famous eyepatch once again. That is worth one star anytime. The original(Escape from New York) had the gritty feel of a world gone mad, of a country ravaged by crime and war, desperate enough to send all it's criminal element to one place. It made me wonder what an island run by criminals would be like. Escape from LA, however, is more like a parody than a sequel. The charactors and plot are just plain silly. Snake deserved better than this.

Summary: A good B-movie ride while it lasts
Review: 15 years after crafting the low budget comic cult classic Escape From New York, director John Carpenter finally got the budget he needed in this sequel/reworking of the original film. Kurt Russell reprises his role as one eyed badass Snake Plisskin as he is dropped into the island of Los Angeles to seek out the president's daughter. Parts of the film seem more aimed to make a social satire of our dwindling freedom, but sometimes the action gets too incoherent and parts of the film seem uneven. Not to mention that there are times when the film feels rushed, like Carpenter just wanted to get the film over with. Either way though, Escape From L.A. is still a fun B-movie ride with a great comic flair, and the great supporting cast which includes Steve Buscemi, Pam Grier, Peter Fonda, Stacy Keach, Cliff Robertson, and B-movie icon Bruce "Evil Dead" Campbell make this one of Carpenter's more decent films of late.

Summary: Rebirth of a classic
Review: Kurt Russell collaborates with John Carpenter to bring snake back in our homes, and I know far too many people that feel that it never should of happened, but I disagree. Accept this movie for what it is, the Escape from New York "Special Edition" with a totally reworked yet incredibly similar plot line. And not just incredibly similar. To this day, I still laugh at Snake sitting in the lawn chair out front of Eddie's place just like he did when he was next to the plane crash in New York. Every single subtle plot point of New York is somehow included into the L.A. storyline. But, if you let your mind enjoy it, and let yourself be captivated by the gritty, downright scary conception of our future and one man dealing with it, it's the same successful movie that New York was, but with 90's movie technology. Steve Buscemi shines in this as "Map to the stars" Eddie, and Bruce Campbell is extremely entertaining for all of the five minutes he's in the film.

As far as the DVD is concerned, this is just one more in my collection of DVD's that frustrates me everytime I look at it. No commentary, no making of featurette (which I saw on HBO, and was interesting), and the transfer is actually not the greatest.

The movie's worth it. Just a dissapointing DVD. Give it a shot and enjoy.

Summary: Chinese gang banger.
Review: I am rating this moving 'cause I want everyone to see me in it. That's right, me. I was actually in the movie as a chinese gang banger who unloads the magazine of my uzi on Kurt Russell (of course I miss). I am the kid in the front, spraying 9mm all over. I then jump into a black car and take off into some ditch. Watch the movie, and look for me!
