Summary: Expensive garbage
Review: Hmmm. I read and enjoyed Dune, and thought Herbert just gradually lost it on all the sequels. Lynch came along, made this movie and short-circuited his way to utter garbage. Expensive to make, this thing died in the theatres, and rightfully so. It still turns my stomach.

Summary: How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways.......
Review: Lynch, Sting, giants worms, a prologue spoken in a Russian/Latin combination......where do I begin? Incomprehensible, dull, pointless, mind-numbing, banal, utterly contemptable.....in other words, the sort of film that is impossible to enjoy if one is sane, rational, and intellectually sound. You stand warned: viewings may cause extreme drowsiness and suicidal contemplations.

Summary: Dune is Still Awesome; Transfer to DVD is great!
Review: I have always loved this movie, and was in for such a treat when I purchased this DVD! The sound quality was wonderful, whenever someone comes over, I have to play a scene w/ the thumpers so they can get the full effect! Great flick! Do Buy! "The sleeper has awakened!"

Summary: The most God Awful movie in the history of mankind
Review: The only reason to get this movie is to laugh at it and make fun of it. Scratch that, the only reason to even watch the movie is Patrick Steward in his pre-Picard days. Horrible movie!

Summary: The most confusing film before Twin Peaks:Fire walk with me
Review: I have an admission: I have never read the book. I picked up a copy a few years back and I gave it a shot, but the thing confused the hell out of me, and I gave up in disgust with myself for not coping with it. I then watched the film.

This, I thought, is better. Yes, it's complicated. Yes, I need to watch it three times to figure out what is going on. But you know what? If you have the perserverance, you'll find yourself down the pub after several 'small' drinks pretending to blow away the landlord by pointing at him and shouting 'mordeeb'. Great fun. My landlord now prefers it if I stay outside.

I'm probably never going to read the book. I'll probably try again, but this film has made the thing accesible (so I don't have to). MTV generation, eat your hearts out.

Final recommendation: buy it, watch it, watch it, watch it. Then bug the hell out of your friends by forcing them to watch it. They'll never speak to you of it again. Oh, and my dad calls it Duane.

Summary: A Masterpiece of Sand and Spice
Review: Being a Frank Herbert's unconditional fan, and having read all 6 novels regarding the Dune universe, I was quite sceptic regarding a possible adaptation for the big screen of such a magnificent and rich narrative work. I shouldn't have worried - it captures the bold intensity of Herbert's books (though mostly the first, I must admit) and manages to surprise, awe, seduce, horrify, scare to death and enthrall all in a mere 2 hours of silver - outstanding! David Lynch goes over the top but still lands on his feet - not an easy acheivement, and quite a formidable cast to backup the richly woeven plot. Superb!

Summary: Yeah for DUNE!
Review: Where to begin? This movie is so incredible. Pick an aspect of film making and know, in DUNE, it's incredible. Never has a film ever been made like this one. If you like the movie you'll love the book.

Summary: If you liked the book, you'll LOVE the movie!
Review: But if you didn't read the book, you'll probably be confused by the complexity of the plot. Still, I thought the casting was brilliant, and the set designs were perfectly-suited to the strange, futuristic world as described in the novel. See the un-cut version if you can --- I don't understand why they shortened it in the first place!
