Summary: Yikes! Finished reading Dune, then watched this . . .
Review: I can't imagine how anyone who hasn't read the book could possibly even make the slightest sense out of this movie. And it's one of the worst book-to-movie translations I've ever seen. They couldn't even get the costumes right, much less the characters and story. Let's all hope next year's six-hour TV rendition is vastly better than this mess of a movie.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good for SciFi Fans, but not much else.
Review: It was different than the book. Any book that becomes a movie loses a lot in the translation, and this is no exception. As usual, the biggest part missing was explanation. They never really explained (in the movie), for example, how Paul's sister got her powers, or at least, it was very vague. But if you've read the book, It's a great movie. You understand everything, and there's something about those big worms that just make it REALLY COOL!!! If you've never read the book, chances are the movie will be a bit over your head. And the book is a bit... dense for those who aren't into SciFi.

Summary: A truly mesmerizing interpretation of Herbert's classic.
Review: "We have just folded space from Ix. Many machines on Ix-new machines-better than those on Richesse." Several years ago I purchased what was then a state-of-the-art video system. I ordered the 12" laser disc version of "Dune" to be delivered along with the system. When I arrived home on the day the of delivery, I found the technician who installed the system seated in my den and absolutely mesmerized by the intense visual images on the screen. Without looking up, he said to me, "This is the greatest movie ever made." Inasmuch as "Dune" was by that time already firmly entrenched in my personal top five, I simply took a seat a watched with him. I had read Frank Herbert's "Dune" series many years before the film was made, a situation that frequently leads to disappointment. "Dune", however, is one of the very rare instances where the film version is not eclipsed by the written word. In fact, it is impossible to say that one is "better" than the other. Such a comparison is irrelevant when discussing masterpieces of this caliber. See this film with an open mind - you will not bedisappointed.

Summary: Magnifecently sensual!
Review: A stunning visual tour de force! David Lynch captures the vivid cinematic imagery that he will later use in Blue Velvet. I found this adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic a fitting tribute to the science fiction master, albeit with the unfortunate casting of Sting as Feyd Rautha. Excellent preformance by all involved, particularly Jose Ferrer (his last film made?). A must see for serious science fictions fans ONLY!

Summary: This movie is better than Five Stars!!
Review: I saw this movie as soon as I could get it from the video store, and I had to tell them to order it for me back in the eighties!! This is the ONLY movie I have seen more than five times, and I've seen it at least 20 times! This is absolutely the best sci-fi movie I have ever had the priviledge to watch, and I've seen them all!!! From the very beginning leave your definitions of concepts tucked somewhere under a distant grey matter fold in your brain, and watch and absorb the completely new ones beamed at you in the movie!! The concept of folding space to travel from one end to the other via mental projection is a believable answer around light speed-time-space limitations posed by Einstein and Hawkins, et al, and one that intrigues my imagination!! Many kudos to the participants that made this film epic! And the voice modulation-amplification weapons idea is stupendous!! It definitely works for me!!!

Summary: absolutely intriguing, imaginative, puzzling--great.
Review: this was a great and imaginative movie. Frank Herbert made it great and then David Lynch put it on screen. many people don't know there's a director's cut--they should see it. it's a wonderful movie and needs to be seen by humans of all walks of life.

Summary: What the heck is this?
Review: I've seen this movie several times, the first time some years ago in the middle of the night. I watched frozen in horror, unable to look away. I admit I have not read the book, so I wasn't too worried about following some kind of story (I could watch with the sound turned off). The visuals are striking, but so very ugly - the long eyebrows, the boils, and what was that ghastly octopus thing in the tank giving orders?!!! The absurd comic-opera costumes, like palace guards in Lichtenstein. The bald nuns or whatever, and their creepy costumes. Loved the sandworms, so I give it a star for them, and loved Kyle /Paul, I give it another star for his performance. He stood out like a lilly on a dungheap, as beautiful as the others were ugly. (and his mom wasn't bad, either).

Summary: David Lynch's worst film.... But that's not a bad thing
Review: I have heard many times before that David Lynch had prepared to make the film into a trilogy, only to be refused by the studio (who else?) because of fear of negative comparisons to the original Star Wars threesome by the press. Wether or not this is true, having read the book it is painfully clear that Dune's complex story simply cannot be made into a single feature length film. In fact, even the book was devided into three main segments, each of which would have made fairly interesting films.

For anyone who hasn't read the book, Dune will baffle to the extreme. It's use of futuristic language and slow progression remains faithful to the book -kudos to the Lynchmeister for that- but by the end it almost seems as if Lynch's script suddenly realised that it had another three hundred pages to go and twenty minutes to show it in, and thus muddles through the remainder of the film to an unsatifactory ending. Much was kept from the novel, confusing those who haven't read the novel, and much more was added by Lynch, confusing the rest of us.

Dune is worth watching just to see the incredible imagery of the mystical planet, something that David Lynch is a master of. The sandworms are incredible, the barren desert landscapes as beautiful as anything to be found on earth, and the sets perfectly matching their time and place. If only Lynch had been able to do as he wished, the film wouldn't have been so damn weird.

Review: This is a great movie for sci-fi and fantasy fans. I recommend it highly

Summary: Dune is an epic classic hidden by time
Review: Few movies have captivated me as much as Dune. A world so thought out and detailed that few meet. The storyline is not as complicated as many would have you think and as it plays out you learn the secret of the spice "melange" and the planet Arrakis. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to escape to another world for some time. An excellent theatrical experience.
