Summary: Needed the extra footage...
Review: ...which sums up my opinion...there was a VHS copy out a while back that had the 20 minutes or so that was cut, where is it now?...why was it not included here?...If you haven't read the book, do so!...this serves quite well as a companion to the novel...Unfortunately, due to the rather poor reception this movie received, there were no sequels, following the series of novels written... The video transfer is great, the sound is perfect...Enjoy!

Summary: Wonderous and Intense
Review: A VISION! There is no film as alien-feeling as Dune. You are suddenly not on Earth, or watching a movie created by Earthlings. You are immersed in an alien culture, and as such, you feel, at times: lost, intrigued, confused, fascinated, challenged, mystified, agape, and profoundly affected. Revel in its perplexity - that's Dune. There's sure no babysitter to hold your hand, but the puzzles are more rewarding when you solve them yourself. It's OK if you don't "get" everything. Repeated viewings are highly recommended and richly rewarding to those who like to think and don't pick their movies based on box office. A clarification to another review point: The longer TV version is NOT the "Director's Cut"! David Lynch would not allow the long hacked-up version to carry his name (rightly so!), and so the name "Allen Smythee" was tacked on, as is done in these instances. I don't recommend the long cut. Editing out the sweet, elegantly precise Princess Irulan narative, and replacing her with a cliche reveals the stultifying heavy hand of the long cut's handlers. I recommend the Lynch original. I love Dune! Enjoy!

Summary: review of Dune from a different soul
Review: i actually saw the movie before I read the book. I was engrossed by the cinematography, and enchanted by the progression of the main character. The movie actually created a desire to know more about the series, so I later read the book(s). Patrick Stewart rules in any role, and only helps enhance the quality of the picture, while kyle Mc-whats-his-name does a great job as a contemplative lead role. the setting and costuming flow into each other wonderfully throughout the entire movie, and I love the use of super-technology. The cultures portrayed are rich and compelling. The environment and anomolies of a super-advanced civilization are introduced in a straightforward and easy-to-stomach fashion that adds flavor to the characters' own interactions with each other. It's definitely worth viewing.

Summary: A Trip
Review: I've seen a lot of films. All kinds. I've watched this one more often than almost any other -- I find it spellbinding. The images are unforgetable; they get inside you and never leave. And they are unlike any images ever put on screen before or since; the 3rd stage Guild navigator, the Art Deco airships, the blue-within-blue eyes of the Fremen. Of course it was Herbert that created the concepts, but you've got to give Lynch credit for realizing them visually. There are some that are among the most grotesque I've ever witnessed, and that, frankly, I wish I'd never seen, but after all, this is Lynch. For years I never met anyone, or read any critic, who liked this film; the difference between my opinion and that of others was greater with this movie than any other I've seen. Now I see that many have loved the film, and that's satisfying. Of course, there will always be those who say "not as good as the book," and who can argue? But, so what. Read the book, then watch the movie. I saw the movie first, and didn't have a big problem following it.

Summary: REMEMBER: Frank Herbert liked this film.
Review: Yes, believe it or not, the late author of the "Dune" science fiction series, Frank Herbert, was reported to be quite pleased with David Lynch's treatment of his novel ... and so was I. Bear in mind that I consider "Dune" to be one of the greatest sci-fi novels of all time, so when a film director takes liberties with elements of the story, I SHOULD be angry ... but not in this case. Considering that the only way to truly do justice to the novel would be to make a film that's at least five hours long, I think David Lynch does an absolutely remarkable job of immersing the viewer in Frank Herbert's universe in just two-and-a-half hours. Some prior understanding of this future galactic culture would be helpful. In other words, READ THE BOOK! David Lynch apparently feels this film is one of his weaker efforts, but I think he's selling himself short. "Dune" is one of the most visionary and exhilarating science fiction films ever. "We have just folded space from Ix," INDEED.

Summary: An Excellent Companion to Herbert's Book
Review: I first became aware of Frank Herbert's Dune in general from a science fiction collectibles book some years ago. I was quite taken with the amount of merchandising that went into it, and decided to read the book. The book, of course, is superb, a pinnacle of science fiction and (dare I say) fantasy, on par with J.R.R. Tolkein, Robert E. Howard, Heinlein and Bradbury. I then went to see the film and was quite pleasantly surprised. The casting, costuming, set-design, and creatures are all that I imagined in reading Dune. The acting was also excellent on occasion, with Brad Douriff in fine nervous form as the conniving and darkly humorous mentat Piter De Vries, Patrick Stewart in a small but vital role as Atredies soldier Gurney Halleck, Richard Jordan as Duncan Idaho, Sting in an excellent performance as Feyd Rautha Harkonnen, and sci-fi favorite Max Von Sydow as Leit Kynes. Duke Leto Atredies, the Lady Jessica, and Thufir Hawat are also done justice, as is Stilgar. Baron Harkonnen, however, is a bit more over the top than in the book and sometimes a trifle absurd. The special effects regarding the Guild Navigators and space travel in general are grisly by today's standards, though many of the battle scenes are first-rate. I did not like the film's conception of Geidi Prime, as I invisioned a more Coruscant-ish landscape (albeit slightly dirtier). Surprisingly, the film does explain several things that the book does not (I won't give these away). "The sleeper has awakened!' says Paul Atredies, and many viewers will as well after viewing this film. Without the viewer having a firm grasp of the book, however, the film does not stand on its own, and is better used as a companion piece by devoted fans. Overall, a good film that will make any sci-fi buff interested. Check it out, and enjoy!

Summary: Awesome book, mediocre movie
Review: Anyone who has read the book (and understood it)will tell you that the book is much better. The movie on it's own is pretty good, but the book makes more sense, has more of a plot, and explains everything in greater detail. The plot was simply too deep and complicated to transfer to screen. You won't understand most of the scenes with the Fremen, the Reverend Mother, or even some of the Harkonnen scenes without having read the book first. My suggestion: Buy the book, read, view the movie, ridicule.

Summary: A Flawed Masterpiece
Review: I don't know what exactly I love so much about this movie, its strange yet deep plot, its unique style, or the unusual characters. Of course it isn't without faults. Its very confusing if you havn't read the book and also to some people just a little to strange (however I like the strange aspect to it). I just love it!
