Rating: Summary: An affair to remeber Review: Tired of prom night rock-outs, Pet, Kelly and Casey, erstwhile known as The Kelly Affair, set out on an east - west journey to find fame, fortune and a few good parties. So begins Russ Meyer's acclaimed rockumentary following the small town girls (the self-proclaimed capitalist, Kelly, in particular had previously shrugged off her Bristol upbringing to adopt a superb Californian-doll accent) on their way to becoming a poptastical success. Dwelling more on their turbulent love lives than the band's splendiforous tunes, however, Meyer has left the girls more famous for their part in the 'Z-Man murder weekend' scandal of '69 than for their unquestionable talent. It was 'Z-Man' Ronnie Barzell's idea to launch the band as The Carrie Nations, following in the volcanic footsteps of the American temperance agitator, Carry Amelia Nation, breaching the peace across the country with their raw brand of emotional outpouring. With the exception of the psych-pop classic Find It however, little of the band's highly sensitive early work as The Kelly Affair is well known. The sweeping upbeat tambourine rhythms of Come With the Gentle People perfectly encapsulates the hope and enthusiasm of the girl band starting out. 'Every day can be a groove' hollers the young Kelly. If only we, like her, would open up our minds. Yet when their minds are opened to the social excesses of an exclusive set of Angelenos, the newly christened Carrie Nations become fixed on a path of mutual self-destruction. Meyer captures the amply watered seeds of breakdown early in his documentative work, when allowed access to the group's first recording session with svengali producer Barzell. Wittily interchanging the faces of domineering Barzell and the inexperienced Harris, the girls' one time manager, Meyer accurately conveys the shift in power and influence surrounding the band. The recording in question, In the Long Run, soon became The Carrie Nations' first success, and the girls began to receive the attention they justly deserved. And yet, as is so often the case, it was not enough. Kelly, although being unfortunately linked to sordid sex and blackmail scandal by the tabloid press, was now rich in her own right. In light of this it has since been implied that her apparent selfishness at this key time perhaps blinded her to the downward spiral in which the band, and so too, the girls' and Harris' own friendships, were inextricably caught. A story of drugs, drink, depression, suicide attempts, abortion and just plain bad sexual choices led ultimately to the tragic murder of Senator Adams' dropout daughter, Casey. The rich body of musical work, however, still remains with us and is not to be left ignored. Remember The Kelly Affair... don't you settle for the rain when you can have youthful sunshine.
Rating: Summary: Lunatic skies of red destruction Review: Russ Meyer (in)famous venture into a Hollywood's major studio is now one of the most regarded cult classics. I'm a eternal lover of that wonderful camp classic named "Valley of the Dolls", and that film, not a sequel, spoofed that spirit as it used the same "pills 'n' showbiz" vogue. Meyer's obsessions are all here (unmeasured breasts, poppy color, kitschy situations, trashy characters, hilarious morality, absurd political dialogues,...), but it's perhaps a little more restrained. (Film critic Ebert was the scriptwriter; believe it or not!) Color, violence, sex, sensationalism and great touches of comedy fills this late 60's flick. However, I prefer "Valley of the Dolls". (I'm gay and those extraordinary Meyer's women leave me very indifferent.)
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: Just when I thought that modern movies had desensitized me. What's that? A movie made in 1970 that is still shocking today? Amazing! All the elements of a good movie...comedy, tragedy, music, suspense, never mind the twists. I give it a groovy two thumbs up.
Rating: Summary: GImme some sugar, baby! Review: Okay, get this straight: if you try to follow the screwed up plot, especially the sickness and horror at the end, you will not enjoy the film. Because this one is about the LADIES! So just fast forward past all the whining and soul-searching these people do, and watch the parts where the women are NUDE. One negative: Not enough sex, or extended scenes of nudity. These women are ripe fruit and, man, I want to pick em! Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: totally fabulous! Review: This as to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. The charactors blow your mind, the soundtrack is something amazing.I just wish I was Ashley saint I'ves pants ! , I beg every one with a sense of humour to watch this movie. ENJOY !
Rating: Summary: boo Review: I rented this first because of all the rave reviews. It stunk. I was hoping for more nudity. There's not a lot and the shots are not as good and long as in other Russ Meyer movies.
Rating: Summary: Cool it! You'll rupture your tongue! Review: Please, please, can someone get someone to re-release the soundtrack to this. I can't get In The Long Run out of my head! This film is such a cack. The music, the editing, the dialogue, the hair, the complete lack of any decent sense of decency! If this film didn't win a dozen oscars, then it didn't win enough! Most so-bad-they're-good films have about 30mins of fun stuff padded by a whole heap of crud, but this film is non-stop! Yes, he was a paraplygic - but he got better! Why did it take so long for this movie to appear in my life?
Rating: Summary: Deliciously entertaining Review: This is an extremely fun movie. It's especially enjoyable if you're hanging out with friends. The pace is fast, the characters are fun, the music is distinctly late 60s, early 70s and it keeps you interested the whole way. John LaZar is particularly memorable in his role as Z-Man or as Porter Hall put it: "The one, the only, the original." A weird, funny movie with a message. Definitely worth having. If you want to have a good time watching a movie, accept no substitues. Mike Myers told Heather Graham to watch this movie since she was going to play Felicity Shagwell. If only the sell-out sequel AP2 could've been this original.
Rating: Summary: The Z-Man Cometh... Review: A movie so far ahead of its time, it captures the seventies chic in a stylistic blend of titilating camp and melodrama. Equal parts morality play and soft-core--the characters are all forerunners of modern cliches. Harris, Kelli, Lance, and Pet funk it up and get down to crazy tunes and wild happenings, baby! Even the modern film buff cannot deny the stylistic angles and use of music that Russ Meyer brought to mainstream hollywood with this film. While parts may be considered offensive by some (what was with the swastika?), overall a challenging, wild adult movie. If your a fan of other sixties/seventies cinema staples like Easy Rider or Midnight Cowboy, this video is an excellent addition to any collection.
Rating: Summary: Shockingly Good! Review: I taped this movie a couple of years ago because I've seen Russ Meyer's other movies (Loved Beneath the Valley of the Utravixens). This was his first legitimate movie with a major studio. Meyer set the standard for movie ratings. The movie's story was somewhat dated (Now almost 30 years old). However, Meyer's classic cinemagraphic style and his willingness to take chances made me appreciate him as a director. Overall, you're going to love him or hate him. I personally enjoyed this love fest!
