Summary: Fantastic Fiction
Review: The only movie I ever saw that actually scared me -- and how! Not a slasher film or a supernatural flick, but the kind of thriller that only Hitchcock and a very few others have ever made. Don't be fooled by the "inspired by a true story" line that's still being used even in advertising the doomed remake. Of course, that "based on a true story" crap is virtually always a perverse redefinition of the word "true," but in this case, it's that scintilla closer to total BS. It's supposedly loosley based on Ed Gein. And guess what? Ed Gein lived in Wisconsin, and he never even used a chainsaw! Plus despite the hype, he only committed two murders before he was caught -- right after the second one, as a matter of fact. Hardly a massacre....But this movie is the sh*t! Next to no blood, next to no gore, next to no violence, but still a brilliant exercise in terror. Tobe Hooper understood that the horror genre's lifeblood isn't buckets of blood pouring out of people's heads, not gore, not grahpic violence, but ATMOSPHERE -- which is why horror novels work, even without all of the special effects. Makes you think -- well, unless you're a movie studio executive, or one of today's young directors....

Review: I thought Halloween had the scariest plot ever!!!Not anymore...okay, Imagine that you're on a trip and stop by a small farmhouse for gas...and the family who lives there are psychotic cannibals with crazy rituals, meat stores, and chainsaws! One scary movie! A genuine horror classic, right over in the front with Halloween and all those!

Summary: Great classic that doesn't need splashy gore to frighten
Review: I wanted to give this all-time fright classic 5 stars but some of the acting early on was tough to sit through (particularly the wheelchair-bound guy), but it is still a film I could watch many, many, many times over. The scene where one girl stumbles into the room with human bones littering the floor and being made into chairs and other furniture, and her getting sick and running out and Leatherface sliding open the door and grabbing her.. ah, classic. And Marilyn Burns' unbelievable portrayal of being stricken with complete terror (especially at Leatherface and co.'s house) is the kind of stuff classics are made of. Buy it buy it buy it!!!!

Review: "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a classic up there along with "Psycho" or "Halloween". It is that origanal. It was filmed with no special style, camera never looks away, there for you must see everything that happens, and that is most disturbing. It starts with a news reports of grave robbery, and some kids got to the cemetery to check out their reletive's graves. They then wonder off the road into a strange house, where kids start disappearing one be one. They are being served up as dinner for this weird family. Only one girl survived that night, but what a night. If you hav the DVD, the film makers, Gunner Hanson (Leatherface) and director Tobe Hooper provide feature length commentery and tell of the conditions of productions, which was at least as bad as it looks in the movie. I loved this movie, and any fan of slasher movies or horror in general will also love it. I know the sequals were horrible, but you have to see this one.

it was the complete defintion of disturbing
since this was one of the first masked killer movies, there is no supernatural, immortal image of leatherface. he is a human being who is doing twisted things with his insane family
and the most disturbing part is that these things did happen in real life.
For all you perfect housewives out there who say "this movie is garbage" to your kids, i turn that comment to your mediocre Wynona Rider and Meg Ryan films becuase The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a movie that details actuall events and no matter how much you ignore it, it will always be there

Summary: Simply thee most frightening of all horror films
Review: When I was very little my uncle from the city would visit and always tell us about TCM. So I, of course, developed a near obsession about it. When I finally saw the film it WAS as scary as he had told. When I got to college I did a paper about it where some research was required. First of all people must consider the times. The Manson case had only recently been settled and people were still affected and freaked by it. It is no accident that the lead looks so much like the beautiful Sharon Tate (a freaksih side note is that this actress, Marilyn Burns, also played one of Manson's women in the TV miniseries: Helter Skelter). What some don't realize about the Manson case is that fear was as much a part of the murders as actual death was. This movie plays that out like no other movie, except possibly Last House on the Left, when the camera seemingly lingers on Sally as she screams so affectingly (a great performance) after all her companions have been killed. As so many others have already pointed out, it is this documentary feel that makes it so amazing. It does of course have elements of the Ed Gein case which so many state but, as other films of these years, the Manson murders were key because they were more recent and imprinted in the minds of so many americans as a most brutal act. These were mostly cautionary tales, especially Last House (which I personally cannot see as a Horror film since all fun is out the door, it's actually too emotionally effecting) whereas Massacre while hard to watch had a sense of fun which horror has to have.

Review: the movie was good, not as scary or gory as i expected but i was very pleased. a few moments to make you jump, i'd recommend it, especially if you plan on seeing the new one, you should see this one first.

Summary: ...And I thought it was a joke...
Review: I bought this classic film when I was in the army about two years ago. Me and my friend thought it was a comic slasher piece with unintentionally hilairous gore and unfocused ravaging. We put it in to the TV lobby video recorder with smiles on our faces... This is going to be fun! Well, the smiles faded away right from the eerie beginning text. This clearly wasn't what we were expecting it to be! It is so sad that this film seems to be eternally plagued by it's unjust reputatiuon as a "dirty" low-budget horror turkey, when it is quite simply the most effective hooror film I personally have ever seen in my life. There's barely any gore ore blood to be seen. Instead, the film focuses on the pressing atmosphere that doesn't allow the viewer to be careless towards it. That is if the viewer is truely focused on watching the film. The film is clearly shot cheap, but the style only adds to the almost documentarily realistic sense of the film. Another thing that makes the film so effective is the fact that you don't get to emphatize with the villains, you don't understand them. That way you are left with a little less information than the victims and therefore empathize with them, becoming them. There are no explanations, no reasons for the horrid acts, only sheer terror. But the film also displays parts of inventive dark humor, mainly in the form of the family grandpa. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is almost perfectly executed. Only real life (like the case of Ed Gein, the inspiration of the film shows) can be more horrific.
