Summary: B4 Moulin Rouge, there was this movie......
Review: Movie Musicals are a rarity nowdays. Last Year Aussie Director Baz Luhrmann brought to the screen Moulin Rouge. Rewind back to 1980 when disco group Village People , Bruce Jenner and Valerie Perrine were big names at the time. Can't Stop The Music may not be no Moulin, there is a bit of tids and bits that may be somewhat amusing. The number that REALLY stands out in comparison to the introduction of Luhrmann's opening scence of the Moulin Rouge is the "Y.M.C.A." number....lol. Seeing Perrine,Jenner and the Village People running thru the mens locker room will never be copied and thank goodness it never was... Another scence that is worth mentioning is the "Milkshake" number also. How campy singing about a milkshake would sound very catchy at the very end. Can't Stop The Music may not be a four star film but it is fun to watch once in awhile.

Summary: Excellent Sound Mix and Transfer
Review: Beautiful audio and video make this long awaited DVD Release worth the wait. This DVD has perfect DTS and Dolby Digital mixes and a superb picture and color balance that rivals the 35 mm print I saw in the theatres when this film was new. Does anyone remember previous issues of this title that were pan and scan and in mono? If you already own one of the other issues, put them aside and get this DVD as it is a gem and is worth the mention for the fantastic job the people at Anchor Bay did to give us a stereo and letterboxed version of this underappreciated gem.-Tony

Summary: It's a hoot , but some people just don't get it.
Review: This movie was intentionally designed to play on many levels. In a lot of cases the satire just went right over the heads of many viewers. Those that "got" it love it .First they cast the Village People a group whose costumes were based on the outfits worn by go-go dancers in NYC 's notorious gay after hours club the ANVIL and had these iconic gay sterotypical characters play straight. Then they got MGM alumni Nancy Walker and Tammy Grimes and June Havoc involved.Threw in Vallerie Perrine and Bruce Jenner as "beards".Took the plot straight out of all those Judy & Mickey MGM musicals and updated it for the Grease and Saturday Night Fever audiences. Then they applied the campness of the Batman TV show to the whole thing. It may not be art but it's a lot of fun if you read between the lines.

Summary: perfect disco movie!
Review: I am not gonna tell you how cheesy the acting is - you already know this; it's the music of Village People that really shines. The movie perfectly reflects the disco years and it should be viewed as such. Now, a few corrections missed by the other reviewers. First, this movie was not a Hollywood production, it was the first (and I am pretty sure the last) attempt at a la "Hollywood" musical by British music giant EMI. Second, although widely acclaimed among the gay community, VP had only one gay member - the Indian guy (for those interested - find his interview for Playboy, complaining about this).

Summary: Ab-Fab Of its time !!!!
Review: sooooooo bad that its sooooooooo good, i was 15 when this came out and my parents took me to see it, my mum enjoyed it but my dad keep moaning about all the poofs " whatever that was !!".
So its badly acted and the songs aint all that great but ive had it in my video collection since 1981 and everytime i watch it " at least once a year " it reminds me of the fine times i had in th late 70s and early 80s.
Buy this film on dvd when it comes out and relive the camp fun times we all had in the 80s...u will love it

Summary: Even BETTER than XANADU!
Review: Can it be true? Is it really better than XANADU? Yes, I kid you not! IT REALLY IS BETTER THAN XANADU! You can do the Shake while watching it...yes, you can do the MILKSHAKE...the MILKSHAKE...and you can see the leather man audition for the VILLAGE PEOPLE singing DANNY BOY. Truly the most flabbergasting movie ever. REALLY!
But YOU CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC...nobody can stop the music. DARN! BUT SOMETHING SURE STOPPED THIS MOVIE AT THE BOX OFFICE...DOA.

Summary: OH, YEAH....SO BAD, IT'S *GOOD*!
Review: OK, first of all, completely ignore Leonard Maltin's taking-himself-far-too-seriously review of this film. Like a pug that's so ugly it's cute, this movie, like so many others have pointed out, is deliciously bad -- horrible acting; cheesy special effects (no doubt state-o'-the-art way back then); riduclous plot; oh, and did I mention *horrible acting*? -- so bad it's wonderful. Like a horrible auto accident you can't tear your eyes away from, this movie is so dreadful that you can't stop watching, if only to see how badly any of the actors (except the ever-perky/pro Valerie Perrine) will deliver their lines. The musical numbers are a delight, though, and it's obvious THAT is where most of them money went. Poor, poor Nancy Walker (that's right, Rhoda's mom) directed this and she'll be remembered for this if nothing else. You haved to wonder WHAT she was thinking, though....

You don't have to be gay or into disco to enjoy this: just sit back and let the horror (and the fun) wash over you. It's THE perfect movie for a group of people to watch and groan together.

BUY THIS MOVIE!

Summary: Watch it - and be hooked!
Review: I was 10 when I first saw this movie and I loved it! I'm now 30 and I still love it!! The Village People were amazing and this movie is FULL of their hits! There are plenty of gay under-tones - how did we not notice them all those years ago!? If you're looking for a true musical - this is it! Huge disco hits throughout the movie that still get played in clubs today! Buy it - if only to see the scene with "Operator! My finger is stuck!"

Summary: Bad Disco Camp-fest -So bad it's high camp!
Review: I'm only buying this because I'm in it(for about 3 frames)!
This was Alan Carr's BOMB after the success
of "Grease". Starring Steve Gutenberg, Valerie Perrine,
Bruce Jenner, The Village People and The Ritchie Family.
Overproduced on every level. Good Costumes. The "Y.M.C.A."
production number is notable! (very GAY!)(So 70's)!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: For gods sake stop the music!!
Review: After having produced "Grease" and making a bazillion dollars, Allan Carr decided that his next project would have some REAL talent in it: the Village People! The result is this musical plane-crash, that managed to end not only the career every performer involved, but an entire genre. Yep, this movie singlehandedly put the nail in the coffin for the movie musical. A hugely entertaining (not in the way the filmakers intended, though), and just busting to come out of the closet look at the 70's disco craze played at fever pitch by all involved. Both Steve Guttenberg and Valerie Perrine screech all of their dialogue while bugging their eyes out (If it were not for the fact that they spend the whole time grinning like idiots, they would play exactly like Vera Miles discovering Mrs. Bates in the cellar). Bruce Jenner is very well cast as a cigar store Indian (think wooden). Director Nancy Walker shows the directorial flair of a less experienced Ed Wood, Jr., and the Village People, are, well, the Village People. It's the production numbers that really make this cheese-fest worth the price, though, including but not limited to, the eye-popping YMCA scene (think Esther Williams played by Colt Models), the Construction worker fantasy (think whatever you like), to the final looooooooooong version of the title song. Everyone involved must have been on serious 80's style drugs. Too bad they coudn't have pumped some into the ventilation system at the theater.
