Summary: A let-down.....but worth letting live.
Review: I remember seeing the billboard posters for this movie back in 1981 and thinking, 'Wow! This has to be the scariest stuff in the world with cover art like that!' I was 7 at the time and incapable of doing anything else about the matter save burning the image of the woman's face emerging from the cracked earth at night into my memory.

Ten years later, I stumbled upon 'Dead And Buried' at my local video rental outlet and I took it out to satisfy my intrigue from antiquity.......

Ouch! Despite possessing a setting that could have contained tons more moodiness and atmosphere as well as featuring a few brutal killings, 'Dead and Buried' failed to register much on the richter scale. A primary peeve, I found, was the way I was given a detective story when I didn't really want one. It made the picture's run more protracted and harder to follow than if James Farentino had been portrayed as a better protagonist than a cop. Indeed, the film is woven around an original premise; the only problem is that it's quite impeded from exploring the possibilities of that idea and transcribing it fully by a dearth of dollar-backing.

Some weaknesses do double as strengths, however. The cast are forgettable enough to allow one to focus on the movie as a whole and the meanders and kinks in the plot make it fun to ask oneself if the film's conclusion can justify the means to the end.

Overall, not a bad little shocker. While no 'Evil Dead' (I hated that flick but needed to name a seminal horror hit here), it manages to conceal the fact that it's treading water for most of its ninety minute run. If you enjoy John Carpenter films then 'Dead an Buried' will be a sure pleaser. If you can imagine 'The Fog' turned inside out so that it's the community that's been turned bad, you'll grasp what 'Dead and Buried' is about. It's an offbeat entry into the horror family but it's not to be held in so much contempt that it should be deemed as good as unwatchable. Rent first and buy only after some very serious thought.

Summary: Not bad
Review: I saw this on tv many years ago highly edited. It is presented here uncut and in a great widescreen format etc. The picture is wonderful and the extras are worth the price alone. The story is what shines here as the story keeps you guessing until the end as any good film should do in this type of genre. Check it out its a good film to enjoy on a lazy afternoon.

Summary: Cult Film gets nice treatment!
Review: I watched this on cable in the 80's and the ending really did surprise me. Local Small town Sheriff has bodies turning up all around him, he fears his wife may be involved somehow, and the local Coroner is a complete Loon. The atmospere in Potter's Bluff is creepy, and there are some very shocking moments to say the least. Overall a highly entertaining movie, especially if you are a fan of low budget 80's horror films - this one is a must see. The 2 disc DVD is nothing but Superb, from the nice Packaging to the Commentaries!

Summary: Unique Premise makes this a Cult Classic,
Review: In the quiet coastal village of Potters Bluff, where tourists and transients are always welcome but when something very strange is happening to the tourists and villagers of Potters Bluff are Brutally Murdered. But even more shocking, when the people are murdered and they back to life as normal friendly citizens around town. The local sheriff (James Farentino) decides to do something about it, while an eccentric mortican (Oscar-Winner:Jack Albertson) is somehow commited to the town`s community. Since the dead are back to life are alive and well... and no one is ever really Dead & Buried.

Summary: Early 80's Hidden Treasure
Review: It was easy for suspenseful, scary, well-acted horror films to become lost in the mish-mash glut of bargain "quickie" slasher films that dominated the early 1980's. Unfortunately, DEAD & BURIED was one of those victims. And how unfortunate...

DEAD & BURIED tells the story of Potter's Bluff; a sleepy New England coastal town where the evenings are foggy, the days are grey, and secrets lie just below the surface. The film let's us in on the secret in the very first reel when a photographer is attacked and we are left wondering if the whole town is crazy, or if some kind of cult is at work. The movie will keep you guessing and every time it reveals new information, it draws you in deeper.

Excellent performances abound including Jack Albertson (of Chico & The Man), James Farentino, Melody Anderson (Flash Gordon), a younger Robert Englund (Nightmare on Elm Street), and Lisa Blount (John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness) as the chillingly seductive and deadly woman who sets this roller coaster ride in motion. All of the cast has an everyman kind of quality. They hold your attention without being "Hollywood".

There is so much more I'd like to say about the plot, but the less you know the better. Just watch the movie. I am so glad the film is coming available on DVD and will include added features to improve the experience further. It has been long out of print on VHS and who knows how long the DVD will be available. Do yourself a favor and don't miss the opportunity to own this. If you are a fan of the genre, you won't be disappointed.

Summary: Fantastic!
Review: It's great to finally see this superb little horror fully uncut (it was always butchered by the censors here in the UK) and in such brilliant quality. Anchor Bay (UK region 2 edition - though it seems to be identical to the Blue Underground release) have done another great job here in finding such pristine source elements. The soft focus photography was always dull and murky looking on VHS but it really shines here.
A great film that plays like a feature length classic Twilight Zone episode.
