Rating: Summary: The Image Review: The BEST S&M movie out there ever !!!!! everything was topnotch. If anything it could have been a little longer.
Rating: Summary: Metzger at his Finest! Review: Arguably the finest S/M movie ever made, Radley Metzger's 'The Image'(aka The Punishment of Anne) tells of Jean, a writer who meets an old friend, Claire, at a party and is soon drawn into her world of S/M along with her slave, Anne. Based on the French novel 'L'image' by Jean de Berg, a nom de guerre for Catherine Robbe-Grillet, this may be Radley (Score!, Therese and Isabelle, The Opening of Misty Beethoven)Metzger's best film. Beautifully filmed and acted and very erotic. The dvd transfer of the film is absolutely stunning. The picture is pristine and the colors leap out at you. The new stereo mix is great. The original mono track is also included. There is a Metzger filmography and a few trailers for his films included as well. Kudo's to Synapse for releasing this gem of a film and doing such a great job on it! If your up for some primo euro-erotica at its finest, look no further!
Rating: Summary: "Sucks" You In Review: As reported elsewhere an important element to be added to any collection of Euro-Erotica from the 1970's; although somewhat stale now. The photography and tempo are excellent and well suited to the rather thin storyline. The film begins softly and draws you slowly down into the obvious futility of the situation along with the actors. The climax is startling and very well performed, the ending, well...a let down. I found the narration (voice) of the mail lead a little bothersome and the script as well at times. Perhaps do to the translation from? French, I assume?Otherwise, another well made film from that time period and genre.
Rating: Summary: The Image Review: Disstasteful art, great for what its ment to be viewed as, howerver not many people are into this kind of thing. Best viewed for two reasons: one being to appresiate, the other being that you may like S&M. Not a very sexy movie, just twisted.
Rating: Summary: The Image DVD Review: Finally, an erotic movie that in fact is erotic. This DVD version is transfered in Wide Screen Format which greatly enhances the visual quaility of this movie. Shot in Paris as the movies background only furthers the movies playfulness between public and private sexual tension. Like "The Story of O" movies of this period explore sexual tensions between men and women that are no longer explored due to the movie rating system of today. By today's standards you couldn't make a movie like this today because it would be tagged with a NC-17 rating and would be the death of a movie like this. A movie like this comes by once in a great while.
Rating: Summary: For Adult viewing. Should have XXX rating. Review: Good quality filming in Paris and NY (interior shots). English dubbing is so-so.Remindful of Just Jaeckin's "Story of 'O'".
Rating: Summary: how many times are they going to ask me to review this movie Review: I already wrote a review, let's see if they keep asking for one. I liked it.
Rating: Summary: The most erotic movie I have ever seen! Review: I bought several erotic movies for my girlfriend and me and out of all of them I have found this one to be the best so far. The DVD has some scenes where there are lines in the picture but they do not take away from the movie, for being such an old movie it transferred well to DVD. I have to admit that I did not think that the movie would get so explicit in some of the scenes, but I think that just made it even better. Seriously though, if you want a very erotic movie then this one is great. There are some scenes that are a little annoying, like screaming for five or so minutes, but overall it is great. I would not buy it if you are looking for a porno, but there are several scenes that you would see in a porno. Go buy it!
Rating: Summary: Very Erotic, but lacks plot, and depth of characters Review: I was actually surprised that this film was displayed in the new release section at my local, independent video store, and not in some sectioned off area. It was totally pornographic-even though it was done more tastefully than most.
I agree that the narration was cheesy-and so was the acting. Anne's role was played by the wrong actress I think. I just didn't see any chemistry between the 2 women. Even though the acting was not that great, I don't think it was really meant to be more than BDSM. Especially during the ending when Claire and Jean are having sex and they tell each other "I love you". It is all about lust, not love. One reviewer commented that this was not real erotica, or something to that effect, and that people should watch "The Secretary" or "The night Porter" to see true erotica. That is not true at all. I've seen all of those films and while they are great-this is just a more shallower version.
Rating: Summary: oh please... Review: I watched this film as I didn't think a western director could possibly shoot an erotic film that's both artsy and arousing, on par with the best works of Wakamatsu, Kumashiro or Konuma. Watching "The Image" hasn't caused me to change my mind I'm afraid, although I have since enjoyed a very nice little Franco film called "Venus In Furs". Corny as hell, trying to be literate and refined when it's only dull and clichéd, The Image has everything, from excessive acting to uninspired casting choices. No offence but the girl that's supposed to be attractive is just insipid, and that's one problem getting into the film in the first place, when it relies so much on you sympathising with the fantasies of the male character. But even if you get past that point, what you're left with ultimately amounts to nothing more than your average euro softcore flick, with shoddy effects, dull lightnings, worn-out decorum and fantasies about as arousing as a rhubarb-flavoured candom or a glowing dildo in an erotic shop. And please leave S&M to the Japanese. European directors only make it offensively tasteless.
