Summary: One of my new favorite movies
Review: I first heard about this movie as a review for the up and comming DVD release (now released) and found the idea of it interesting, with giant twisted bunnies, time travel, a crazy motivational speaker, and lots of sub plots (LOTS of sub plots). Upon watching it I was completely engrossed with this movie. I watched it twice in a row (thats how engrossed I was) and liked it even more the second time. I have seen this movie referenced as horror, but it is not. Some parts of it may be a little overly intense for little kids, but in no way is the intention of the movie to frighten or shock. It is one of those movies that you end up thinking about for a long time afterwards. I found the soundtrack lingering in my mind too. I would DEFINITELY recomend seeing this movie at least once or even twice (there is a lot going on and you can miss a lot with only one viewing) so get your hands on a copy!

Summary: something different........makes me utterly blissful
Review: Despite the fact that I now have to check behind my shower curtain everytime i go into the bathroom, making sure that damn bunny frank isn't there.........this is possibly one of the bestest movies ever. i want to thanks the casting people, as they took jake gyllenhaal and let him expand as this totally great character.......despite the fantasy feel of the whole picture, jake's performance made the whole thing totally comfortable. gotta love that evil grin! and jena malone was pretty good too! so, don't see this movie if you are rabbit-phobic......as you might not get sleep for a while (not that it is SCARY, but that damn rabbit is so creeptastic!)......but everyone else should see it. it's going straight into my staff picks. (i also like the fact that it takes place very close to where i live)

Summary: Original ideas, average execution
Review: I have just seen the official website of the movie. It does give a 'scientific' explanation.

Now, knowing what actually happened in the movie, I can say that the idea was strikingly original, but the way it's executed is rather confusing. It could have been more clear, so that more viewers could understand it. Too bad, because the movie's theories on tangent universes are incredibly fascinating. A more experienced director would have made a classic with the same concept.

Summary: Intriguing, original first film by Richard Kelly
Review: I have read several reviews that said that "Donnie Darko' is difficult to classify; indeed, it is composed of an exotic blend of sci-fi, horror, teen angst, and comedy, all seasoned with bits of physics and philosopy, While not a perfectly realized film, it is the kind of movie that many people, myself included, wish there were more of. These are ones that pose challenging or interesting questions, then ususally leave it up to the viewer to come up with answers. Often, there are no real answers, of course, but the thought process is definately stimulated. I appreciate that. I suppose that "Donnie Darko' is best recommended to people who do not like pat answers.

This is the story of a boy who is suffering from some major mental problems. He hallucinates, often seeing a hideous, man-sized bunny rabbit which commands him to commit all sorts of anti-social acts. He thinks he can see a sort of time travel path leading people on to whatever is next in store for them. He believes the world is about to end. Is Donnie insane, or has he stumbled upon some truith about existence? Is he a victim of the American upper-middle class lifestyle, one which truly does have some 'Alice Through the Looking-glass' elements to it, or is he more highly evolved than those around him? Did the world, in fact, end, as Donnie foresaw? An Edgar Allen Poe quote came to mind near the film's end: "Perchance everything we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.'

What I can't describe here are the visuals, which are fascinating. Perhaps it was just my imagination, but it seemed as if every scene had a slight dream-like quality to it, implying that everything I was seeing could be either a memory or a fantasy about some future event.

Richard Kelly has the right stuff to become a major new force in movies. I have been convinced of Jake Gyllenhall's tremendous acting skills since 'October Sky', another highly recommended movie.

NOTE: I gave 'Danny Darko' four stars. My real rating is 4 1/2. I had a problem with the path and development of one character [Roberta Sparrow], and this prevented my giving it 5 stars.

Summary: You get it or you don't
Review: I am finding that those that get the film love this movie, and those that don't hate it and find reasons why it is bad that have nothing to do with the movie. One reviewer said that it's like Donnie is taking bait. He is, and he's supposed to. See, Donnie is a typical highschool student with a not so typical life. He's being visited by a 6ft rabbit with a reptilian feel to the face, and he's finding out about time travel as well as going through the motions of highschool in 1988 (great soundtrack by the way). Along the way we meet a self help guru who well... isn't Tony Roberts by any means, a bible thumping teacher, his psychiatrist, his parents who are the coolest parents, and his two sisters as well as his new girlfriend who just moved into the neighborhood. They are all there for a reason and they like Donnie feel something, but don't know what. The commentary by the director/writer and Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) is great, and the lost scenes are well... amazing. Why a few made it to the cutting room floor I don't really know. The two trailers are great (the second one you have to go to the Special Features, then "Philosophy of Time Travel". Hit the right arrow key till you get to Appendex B and hit the up button. That will highlight an arrow and with that you hit enter.) We also get to see the original infomercial for the selfhelp series, and several TV spots (But not as many as on the Fight Club DVD) and more. Many people are wondering why it didn't get wide release, well I guess that there is one reason... but I can't say because it would give something about the movie away but feel free to email me to find out my opinion on that. Anyways, you either get it or you don't. No middleground here. You love it your you hate it, but you won't stand in the middle.

Summary: WHAT A MOVIE!!!
Review: This movie is dark and intense and a lot on the weird side. From the beginning you are wondering where it's going, and you don't really ever find out, but [gosh] this is a great movie! It actually wasn't really what I expected. It was better. This movie is a work of art and at the end it really makes you wonder, not just about the movie, but about the purpose of life. Ok, now I'm analyzing too much. See this movie! If you like intense, unpredictable, dark movies, you will love this one!

Summary: An "American Beauty" for the Psychologically Deranged
Review: This movie is very much an acquired taste; you will either love or hate it. It is not for everyone as it is a very dark and brooding film. I, if you hadn't guessed, loved it. It has many, many layers of subtext and I won't lie, it is somewhat hard to follow and the ending (not a spoiler) may very well leave you confused, as it is very open to interpretation. Thus it may require more than one viewing to get the complete picture of this film. It is extremely slow paced, though it is not a setback, it is not for those with a low attention span. It is a refreshingly original film, with a great musical score, while it is mostly very simple it fits well with the movie. Jake Gyllenhaal gives an absolutely astounding performance, which makes the movie worth watching alone (and what does he follow up his groundbreaking performance with... Bubble Boy). As does Mary McDonnell, who I found to be extremely likable. The rest of the cast also delivers great performances, though for the sake of time and space, I will not acknowledge individually, they are all nonetheless great.

I find the realistic, yet ultimately satirical portrayal of the self-help guru subplot is a very interesting and great part of the movie. It pokes at the extremely self-righteous who are so easily brainwashed by anyone with a nice appearance and views that are so generalized that they can match with anyone's that they become so involved and so impassioned by such fluff that it is absolutely nothing when it is subject to scrutiny. So much so, that you may be angered by how easy it is to generalize ideals, package them, sell them, and get inordinate amounts of money off of the weak (isn't that right phone-in psychics?).

This movie is a dark and evocative masterpiece. Interestingly, it is not exactly possible to be justly classified, as it is very transcendent genre-wise. One minute it is a gothic romance, the next a teen coming-of-age story, the next a twisted psychological drama, then a time-travel sci-fi thought maker, then a family drama, and then back again. I highly recommend this movie to any movie lover or anyone interested in broadening one's horizons.

Summary: Bizarre...
Review: This is one of the weirdest, most original films that I have seen in a long time! I won't go into detail about the plot, since many other reviewers have already done just that, but I will tell you something else: YOU WILL BE FREAKED OUT!

The acting, direction, and musical score are all top notch. Jake Gyllenhaal gives his best performance since "October Sky", and Jena Malone and Patrick Swayze are great, also.

This film is not for everyone, but for those of you who liked "Vanilla Sky", "Memento", and "Requiem for a Dream", this is most definitely a treat! I liked this film a lot!

ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!!!!!!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: best movie... ever.
