Summary: Comedy does not come much blacker
Review: When the old Tears for Fears hit "Head Over Heels" kicks in, early on in the movie, you're taken quite by surprise. Not because it's another case of trying to show a bit of retro cool by referencing the 80's but because it fits in so well. The fact that the scene is in slow motion should be naff but in fact it is close to the best placement of a song in a movie in ages.

Donnie Darko is a fantastic movie that will leave you with a smile on your face, despite its bittersweet ending. While being startingly original, it does reference other movies (Harvey, The Sixth Sense) but doesn't seem like a second rate copy or a "re-imagining" for that matter (take note Mr Burton). It certainly deserves a wider audience than it got on release in the cinema with a groundbreaking performance by Jake Gyllenhaal and a wonderfully understated performance from Drew Barrymore.

Richard Kelly can join such young directors as Spike Jonze and Paul Thomas Anderson who buck the trend of what is wrong with so much in American cinema, namely cliched and rehashed pap for the masses. It's important that we cherish movies like these as they have become so rare - a true classic!!

Summary: I can't believe I bought this movie
Review: Boring and pointless. I normally avoid movies with Drew Barrymore in them and I wish I'd avoided this one. Don't waste your time or your money.

Summary: Makes you think. . .
Review: Some people are just irreversibly jaded. I think our friend and fellow reviewer from Brooklyn who shall remain nameless is one of these people. This is a film that I will admit to not liking the very first time I viewed it. Upon my second viewing, I changed my opinion considerably. MOST people who praise dark and twisted movies do indeed like the decidedly dark and twisted. I loved both PI and Requiem and I really like this film. As far as Lynch's films are concerned, if you even dare to say Mulholland drive is any greater an achievement than this, your medication dosages are in great need of adjustment. This is a film. There is no need to classify anyone who likes or "understands" the film as nothing more than "preppie"(s) in search of coolness. Not enough people have seen this film to make it cool. It is so unbecoming to bash people in a review for no apparent reason whatsoever. Donnie Darko is a film that has a quality like others before it an hopefully many after it will have: it makes you think about it long after the end credits roll. Everything is open to interpretation, except blatantly harsh people who feel they have no choice but to alienate and look down on people who they disagree with. We will indeed get out of your house, it's a shame you don't leave it more often - it might do you some good.

Summary: Boring Much!?!
Review: I've seen my I've seen my fare share of Horror, Sci-Fi, Suspense, etc. & I can honestly say I was mentally bored with this movie. The kid that played Donnie was not a believable character. The only time I saw "talent" was the scenes when he was hypnotized. Other than that the only good thing about the movie was not the remake, but the fact they used mad world, a Tears for Fears classic song, was good enough to bother watching it.

Summary: The Last Temptation of Donnie Darko
Review: To say that this movie represents one thing, and one thing only is a great disservice to this film. It is many things at once, but above all, for me, it is Richard Kelly's, the writer, Christ complex come to life. Kelly even points to the meaning of his film in one scene when the camera tilts up to reveal that one of the films playing at the Halloween film fest is "The Last Temptation of Christ", and anyone who has seen that film will undoubtedly see the parallels.

Donnie Darko is Kelly's Christ figure who travels back in time at the end of the film to fulfill his duty to redeem mankind. However, the film is also more than even that at the same time. Those who are good are bad, and those who are bad are good (according to man's standards). Bottomline, this is a very good, deep, thoughtful, psychological film and I highly recommend it to everyone. Just don't overthink this film or it will lose its meaning for you.

Summary: Alright, I kinda like this movie...
Review: It's pretty good for the most part. But I like how flawed it is as well. I like flawed films. You will probably like it.

Summary: Quirky and dark, yet entertaining.
Review: "Bubble Boy" Jake Gyllenhaal did an excellent job of portraying a really disturbed kid. This movie is a bit quirky and dark (no pun intended), but is still entertaining. Some people may not get the ending, but I thought it was rather original.

Summary: Dark but powerful
Review: This movie actually makes you want to watch it over and over just to understand it(a good thing). One of the best movies I have EVER seen(I've seen a lot of movies).

Summary: you won't be able to shake this one
Review: A great, dark, surreal experience. I knew I had to see this movie when I read about the scary man in the bunny suit bringing warnings about the end of the world, and it didn't disappoint. As moody as the Crow, as cryptic as Mulholland Drive, and still funny. Plus a great soundtrack throughout with Joy Division and a heartbreaking remake of Tears For Fears "Mad World". If nothing else, it's highly original, and worth several hours of discussion and a second watch. I loved it!
