Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Twisted Review: How many pictures can you see the male writer ably playing the role of a female investigating cop?The whole movie plays like the initial lawn scene in Blue Velvet - on the surface everything is placid and innocent, underneath, the hidden critters are fighting savagely to the death. Psycho Beach Party's exterior is a satiric nod to the brainless beach party movies in the '60s era of the young Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. What's under the surfin' is a tangled wilderness of murder, madness, and general kinky behavior. And it's all handled with manic, even camp, enthusiasm. Directed by Robert Lee King and written by Charles Busch from his stage play.
Rating: Summary: Need Entertaining Review: Amusing, slapstick fun comedy. Definately worth a watch and giggle
Rating: Summary: Hilarious campy romp on the beach. Review: I have yet to see the play, but the movie is hilarious. The soundtrack is probably my favorite of the year, and the dvd gets put in regularly at parties or when friends are over to give everyone a laugh. Highly recommended, but I would give it a rent first if you are unsure of whether or not you want to add it to your collection. For myself, there was no other choice after I saw it.
Rating: Summary: I Loved This Movie! Review: Way too much fun! A great parody of sixties beach movies, with a dash of the pscho/slasher genre thrown in. The acting isn't the greatest, but then, it isn't supposed to be. This is a very good bad movie. Young love, campy sets and costumes, Drag Queens, bad surfing mattes--what's not to love? And the dance contest scene from the Luau is to die for!
Rating: Summary: Beach Blanket Bimbo Review: Charles Busch is one of the funniest men on the planet. In his play "Die! Mommie! Die!" he had me in stitches just walking across the room. This movie is really funny, and as others have pointed out, Lauren Ambrose is really, really good in this; funny, and very good in doing the different personalities. But I have to take one star off for not having Charles play the part that he wrote and played on the stage- Chiclet. Most of the fun is watching this rather tall, handsome guy not only play a 17 year old surfer chick (and her 17 other personalities), but that he is just dead-on. It's like he trance-channels Sandra Dee! I NEED to have a DVD of "Die! Mommie! Die!" In any case, this is a very funny movie, a great parody of the beach party movies, 60's Grand Guignol, and the whole "Scream" thing. Nicholas Brendon's description of the perfect date is a highlight. But at this price, rent, do not buy.
Rating: Summary: OOO, if this isn't the flip side of cool....! Review: Perfect for any time of the day or night. A raucous romp, a seedy, silly, sensuous, sarcastic send-up of 60's era teen beach/horror flicks. And funny, funny, funny...Watch it over and over again, and you'll soon be lighting tiki torches, doing the limbo, and dancing to the groove tunes. "You think it's a teenage world...." Ha-ha! These teens are no Mousketeers! Thank you, thank you, thank you to cast, crew, writers (!!), director and producer. I haven't enjoyed a movie so much since, well, Ed Wood.
Rating: Summary: Comedic Sex, Sexuality, Drama and Death Review: Psycho Beach Party was very funny and deffinately worth the price. A mix of the beach party movies, slash-em-up-comedy, and rampant sexuality. All mixed together with lots of guys and lots of a girls and even some gay-ness, it's great. I deffinately reccomend it.
Rating: Summary: Don't be fooled....It's not that great Review: Unfortunatly, Psycho Beach Party wasn't for rent anywhere around me, so I bought it. Not a huge mistake, but I really wish I wouldn't have paid [price] for it. It had a lot of potential to be so much better. All of the actors were great but the story lacked in many ways. This movie tried way to much to parody old beach movies. If your thinking this movie has a darker edge to it due to the the supposed slasher movie parody parts don't be fooled. I thought it would be a reasonable mix between the beach movie parody and the slasher movie parody, but the beach movie parts were so overwhelming that it really took away from the story and the talent of so many great actors. Good try but no cigar for the creators of this flick. The casting person should be promoted, though.
Rating: Summary: Mediocre overall, but some funny scenes Review: I was highly disappointed by this dvd and am happy I only rented it versus purchasing it based on the reviews. While I found some of the scenes funny, most of it just falls flat. As a few previous reviewers noted, this probably was much better on the stage. Actually watching an old Frankie and Annette beach party movie is more entertaining and more campy.
Rating: Summary: The Extent Of My Love Of This Film Review: My love began one night while i was channel surfing this summer. What caught my intrest was a certain movie on Stars (Psycho Beach Party, if you hadn't guessed already). I only started to watch it because of Nicholas Brendan, I love him on Buffy, and just loved the film. From the way Tanaka always talked in amazingly witty rhymes to how Chicklet got surfing lesons only when she switched to Anne Bowman(her other personality) in front of Tanaka. This movie was well writen and it's so much fun. Sure the beginning is slightly confusing, and the ending well it took me 'bout ten minutes to figure it out. The characters were great and perfectly casted. I could never get enough of Starcat and Chicklet. I can just barely wait for it to come out on VHS in public stores or for the price to go down on Amazon.com. I love this movie so much im watching other movies just to keep my mind off my lack of this classic in my colection. Hope you like it as much as I did, or at least 1/2 as much, because that will still be a lot.
