Summary: This movie hasn't aged well - rent before you buy
Review: I remember seeing this movie back when it came out and I just loved it. I love the Beatles and own all of their U.S. releases on the original Capitol and Apple Records. I bought this so my children could see it. What a disappointment! It really hasn't aged well. The music and songs sounded great but other parts of the dialogue were difficult to hear. Parts of it were really boring. The best part was seeing the fab four at the very end. A Hard Day's Night would probably have been a better choice. I've seen it recently on American Movie Classics and it's funnier than I had remembered. I suggest you rent this before you buy.

Summary: Clever and effective animation...
Review: Jeremy, the Nowhere Man, is among the most vivid and likable characterizations of this film, but there are many characters to brag about. The Beatles as toons is a ingenious idea, but the music and humor are the main attractions. The messages and the poignancy are just as perceptive, and this cartoon movie feature tops my list maybe even higher than the best of Walt Disney or Warner Brothers. WARNING: some of the images are hallucinatory, surreal, and bizarre. And if you can get by that, sit your family down, and enjoy a memorable piece of history and entertainment that still clicks with your casual audience. It is suitable for everyone to view.

Summary: A Couple of Flaws on DVD but otherwise Five Stars
Review: First off, let me say the DVD print is amazing - the colours are beautiful and the sound quality is first rate too. No complaints there, and the extras are not bad at all. Some people have critized the audio commentary by John Coates, saying he's boring, etc, but I personally found him quite charming to listen to.

However, there is a big flaw at the 0:25:44 mark, where the 2 channel original mono mix becomes stereo till the 0:42:18 mark. Also I'm not sure if the image is framed properly as even though there is a bit more visible image at the left and bottom of the frame, the top of the image seems to crop the tops of heads at times (I have the VHS version to compare it to). This is quite noticeable during the re-added 'Hey Bulldog' sequence. At the 1:19:29 mark of the movie, during 'Hey Bulldog', John's & Paul's heads pop out of the top of the piano and out of the top of the frame too, whereas they don't on the full-frame video version!

Still, especially when compared to the horribly botched recent re-release of the Beatles' classic movie "A Hard Day's Night" on DVD by Mirimax (you want a butchered fake widescreen image and bad sound, you've got it) this Beatles' Yellow Submarine DVD is definitely worth buying. The movie itself is a classic and even with the flaws I've mentioned I have to give it a full FIVE stars.

Summary: Who needs modern special effects?
Review: Nowadays, professional reviewers seem to spend as much time going over what the latest technical achievements are in any given film as much as they review plot. I suppose this is ok, as any film is a team effort, and "Spiderman" would not have been as good without computer animation. It's just that sometimes TOO much emphasis is placed on technical merit.

Now take "Yellow Submarine". While there were certain techniques that "advanced" animation for it's time, these deal more often with creativity than technical merit. It's just that this animated feature consists of drawings that your children can do. It took a major creative force to coordinate putting it all together, but the fact remains that this is a very entertaining film consisting of a lot of simple drawings. My own children (ages 5 through 9) are absolutely fascinated, and their old fart parents can't help singing along when the well-known songs pop up.

And what a collection of songs. While technically not music written specifically for the film, the songs were still fairly fresh when this movie came out. The songs represent arguably the cream of the Beatles crop, and if you're gonna make a film starring the Beatles, you use recent Beatles music. I have no problem with using established songs for a film in this case.

What I like most about it is that the whole family seems to like it more with each viewing. I'll admit it does take a bit getting used to at first, especially when it seems "primitive" at first compared to "modern" animation. But once we get the feel of it, like a good music album, it's something that's fun to watch over and over again. I can't say that about too many other films.

Summary: A Movie to Live By
Review: Would it sound ridiculous to say I've been watcing this movie since I was 4? I have, and I know every single word; dialogue, music, idiot background noise; everything. It's fabulous because it's a psychedelic musical journey for the parents and adults, and the PERFECT way to get your young kids into the Beatles. The cartoon will draw them in, and next thing you know, they'll be singing "When I'm 64" at the top of their lungs around the house. God knows that's what I did.

Summary: Animatic
Review: A very interesting animated film. The Beatles didn't want to make another film so the compromise was this animation with actors doing a credible job voicing the Beatle characters.

The Beatles saw this film & were so impressed that they wanted to be in it - so they appear right at the very end.

Some of the songs in this aren't their very best... viz "Only a Northern Song", & "Alltogether Now" but you might discover that this film is an allegory of the Beatles themselves (& the 60s) - brining colour & music to the world - something we're still grateful for.

Summary: A Fab Fab Four Movie!
Review: This movie is the 20th century's "Alice in Wonderland" meets "The Oddysey"! The animation is great and the colors give the feel of the psychedelic swinging sixties! The movie also contains some of the best Beatles' songe like "Sgt Pepper" and "Eleanor Rigby"! Whether you're a middle aged person who grew up screaming to the Beatles or a teenager or even a 6 year old, this Fab Four animated movie is definitely Fab!

Summary: We should all live in a Yellow Submarine
Review: Wouldn't it be fun traveling through a psychedelic world in a Yellow Submarine with John, Paul, George, and Ringo? Of course! And that is exactly what the viewer is doing in Yellow Submarine. Pepperland is a land where everything is about Love and Peace, amd of course Music. That is until the blue Meanies come and destroy it. The only people who can help Pepperland now are the Beatles. Fred sets out in Pepperland's Yellow Submarine, gets the Beatles, and they make their way back to Pepperland with stops and fun along the way. They also meet Jeremy, a real "Nowhere Man". Eventually they make it to Pepperland to save it from the Blue Meanies. Do they suceed? I'm not telling, you'll have to find out when you watch it. The only thing about Yellow Submarine that I didn't care for was that the cartoon characters aren't voiced by the actual Beatles. But you get used to it after a while. After you watch the film many times, you even start to tell who is supposed to be who. And at the end is a special treat, an appearance by the real Beatles. Throughout the movie, there are many great Beatles songs. I really like "All Together Now". And this new edition has the added song "Hey Bulldog", which is also great. "Yellow Submarine" is a great movie for the young and old alike.

Summary: Greatest movie ever, besides a hard day's night and help
Review: Yellow Submarine is one of the best movies. It's really colorful and the wordplay is awesome. Some parts are sort of boring, but the good parts make up for it. It's the best.

Summary: creative yet boring
Review: I am somewhat of a beatles fan, but I really didn't care for this movie. Sure, the animation sequences were ok but anyone over the age of 10 will probably find this film to be dull. The soundtrack to Yellow Submarine is good, though.
