Summary: disappointing.
Review: I love Twin Peaks as a show, but the lack of a pilot, when nothing in the package indicated its lack, was a sad surprise. However having the next 7 episodes in a single collection is still cool, I suppose...

...but the disappointment doesn't stop there. The menus are counterintuitive and some of the lettering and fonts on the extras are difficult to read and hard on the eyes. One of the extras is deceptively titled "Introduction to David Lynch". This extra is merely interviews with some of the Twin Peaks cast and critics *about* David Lynch; he's not there at all - and when they refer to specific scenes in Twin Peaks or Lynch's other works, they didn't even include clips. I suppose it's a rights issue but again, disappointing.

On the flip side, the extra with the "Twin Peaks Directory" not only contained no spoilers from later episodes on the show, it clearly stated this fact up front. While I am sure that such a setup will annoy some fans who know the series backwards and forwards, it's nice that the 2nd season will not be spoiled for folks who are new or who have forgotten much of the series.

Finally, last and worst, the transfer was soft; I saw a lot of rainbows in the first two episodes, and in places, it seemed out of focus. This was on a Sony NS400P player too. I have watched very few DVDs that looked so poor, which is a shame considering that a lot of the power of the series is in its imagery. sigh. I love the series but really the only things to recommend this set are the generic statements that DVDs are better technology, and more convenient than tapes. I hope Artisan does better with the second season.

Summary: nothing special about this "special edition"
Review: Any DVD collection that touts itself as being "The First Season: Special Edition" damn sure better have then entire first season included. What studio moron agreed to release this without the pilot? I mean, if I'm gonna shell out fifty bucks or more on something called "special edition" I expect it to be special. There is nothing special about this set at all. I did better myself taping the Bravo repeats back in the early 90s.

The shows are great, this collection stinks.

Summary: Twin Peaks resurrected
Review: Being a fan of the show when it first popped onto the screen in the eighties I was overjoyed to see a First Season box set release of this innovative and evocative creation of David Lynch and Mark Frost. Although the lack of the pilot episode (due to apparent studio battles) will aggravate a lot of fans, the enclosed booklet outlining the story so far and the 'Previously on Twin Peaks' section on episode 1 should fill in the gaps. The DVD transfer is excellent, picture quality is superb making the whole season have a beauty about it that was perhaps missing on TV broadcast. The sound has also been given a five star treatment offering the choice of either stereo, 5.1 or DTS and this should satisfy all DVD buyers. Top class all round. Buy it.

Summary: Great Series - Lousy Disc Collection
Review: My low rating is not for the series itself, but for the way it is packaged and offered. If you have never seen Twin Peaks, be forewarned that the "Season 1" DVD set does NOT include the Pilot which included the murder and the beginnings of the investigation which was the basis of the entire series. I don't believe the Pilot episode is even out on DVD yet. One has to wonder at the thought process of releasing a collection of discs that chronicle the investigation of a murder without releasing the episode in which the murder occurred. Instead, Episode 1 of this set jumps into a "Previously on Twin Peaks..." segment that loosely summarizes the pilot and puts the viewer into a position of trying to figure out who is who and why side comments between characters should be important, or what they even mean. Whether or not this series is better than the X-Files may be debatable, but there is no question as to which DVD set is superior. X-Files offers 24 episodes per set, with 6 episodes per disc. That would pretty much be the entire Twin Peaks repertoire, which is available here with less than 2 episodes per disc on average. X-Files also includes TV spots, commentary, documentaries and even games. I'm not trying to promote X-Files over Twin Peaks, but instead point the Twin Peaks marketing team to an example of a "good job" in the hopes that they can do a better job with the remainder of their product.

Summary: Yes, the pilot is not included. However...
Review: ...this is a great set of DVDs. The episodes are crystal clear, and the script notes add to the package by tying up some loose ends (what was the deal with those Flesh World magazines anyway? You'll find out in the script notes). I had forgotten how much I had truly truly enjoyed these episodes until I went off on a Twin Peaks jag yesterday and watched them all.

As for not having the pilot, I do have the video tape of the movie made from the pilot, with the tacked on ending. If you stop watching that when you see Andy playing the trumpet to Lucy, then you've seen the pilot.

Summary: excellent, but WHERE IS THE 2 HOUR PILOT???
Review: I loved Twin Peaks, and it's about time they put the series on DVD. However, I was very dissappointed that the pilot was not included in this set. In response to one reviewer's suggestion to buy on eBay, I want to say, "I HAVE the pilot on vhs. I recorded the entire series!" I want the DVD. I may be able to buy some hack copy on ebay, but that isn't what I want. I want a high quality respectable DVD...of THE PILOT. I want it all on DVD from the moment the magic started. Honestly, I think the same whipsmart team that has taken 5 years to release the DVD's of Buffy in the USA must be on this project, as well. If it is common knowlegde that one shops on eBay to buy illegal copies you think someone would GET THE CLUE. WE ARE WILLING TO PAY. PILOT NOW!

Summary: No pilot?
Review: To the guy who defended this box set by saying those who complained should shut up and buy it on ebay: what world are you living on? When people buy a box set stating that it's the first season, WE EXPECT THE WHOLE THING! Why not subtitle it with FIRST SEASON MISSING PILOT! nowhere on the box does it even STATE this.

BE WARNED!

Summary: No pilot and cheesy features...but still a masterpice
Review: I sat down last night to watch my new DVDs and was just as horrified as everyone else to find that the pilot episode was missing, again. It was missing from the VHS boxed set as well. I had to tape it off of Bravo in order to get a decent copy.

But the missing pilot is not the only problem with this set. The cheesy home-movie "documentaries" that are provided as special features are equally disappointing. Although I am grateful to people like Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, Catherine Coulson, Richard Beymer, etc for taking the time to give interviews, I think that sitting through an interview with the lady who owned the T-Mar (Double R) diner was a bit much, particularly as the interview included no actual footage of the diner as it appears today, something I might have been interested in seeing. Clearly, the features on this boxed set are put together by fans with limited resources---eg, the guys from Wrapped in Plastic and Twin Peaks Festival organizers---rather than anyone with the power to really do something wonderful, and watching them is not unlike sitting through the Blair Witch Project.

All of these negatives, however, are worth suffering through for the privilege of having the episodes on DVD. I've noticed things on these nice, clear DVD images that I hadn't noticed in years of watching the show on TV or VHS. Lynch is a master. I can only hope that he takes enough pride in his work to step up and make a better DVD for the second season, for the movie, and for the pilot. There must be reels of outtakes and behind the scenes goodies. A tour of the locations would be fun. How about an interactive diary? A lot of good things can be added to spice up the package. For the pilot, how about having both endings---the TV version that led into the series, and the European film version that ends with the Bob and Mike sequence?

Is it a good buy? If you're a fan, and if you can wait patiently for the pilot, then yes. If you've never seen the series, wait until Bravo runs the series again in full so you can see the pilot and the show itself before you spend the money.

Summary: Great series, mediocre DVD
Review: Twin Peaks is one of the most interesting and original series' to air on television. This is coming from someone who is not a big fan of David Lynch. Most of his work is visually entertaining, but is completely lacking in plot. Look at Lost Highway--Lynch just spliced a bunch of interesting but nonsensical film together, and people, as they often do, mistook pretentious nonsense for art. That said, Lynch has real talent, and it is the moderating influence of Mark Frost (Hill Street Blues) that brings it out. They make an incredible team. Finally David Lynch's artistic talents are combined with someone who understands story and character development. The result is Twin Peaks, engaging even when Lynch indulges his taste for the bizarre. Even if you don't like Lynch, you'll probably like at least the first season of Twin Peaks.
That said, this DVD edition is alright, not great. The pilot should have been included. If you haven't seen Twin Peaks, you'll be lost, I guarantee it. It would have been nice to have the pilot and season 1 as a set. The special features section is really bad. There are some fascinating video postcards from the various actors and actresses, but the interviews and a brief section on the making of the red room were horribly done and shot in a home-video style that is downright annoying. You'd think they could have put a little more effort into the special features, after all, they are one of the best reasons to buy DVD's.

Summary: "Pilot??" Cant we give David the benefit of the doubt?
Review: Only a genius could have created such works of art and such masterpieces. Everyones complaining because it doesnt include the "pilot"? Cant we give David the benefit of the doubt that theres a reason it isnt included?

I dont know if you are but I am.
