Summary: Men In Black
Review: The movie Men In Black was a good movie to me. It was creative and exciting. You never knew what was going to happen next. When it first came out in theaters me and my sister saw it there twice. If they made another sequel I would go and see it. The antogonists were the aliens because they wanted to see the main characters downfall. The protagonists were Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. I don't think that anyone else could have played there parts any better.

Summary: Much More Than Just a "Good Compromise"
Review: I must come clean right from the start and admit that I'm considering buying the "Superbit Collection" version of "MIB". Then I could generously give disc one of my "Deluxe Edition" to a friend. Now I'm rationalizing, so it's on to the DVD in question. (Although I should mention that there's yet another version, the "Collector's Series" disc with DTS audio encoding. Oh, and I almost left out the "Limited Edition"--wouldn't want to do that, as it could confuse matters.)

The first "MIB" was one of those rare summer releases that actually lived up to expectations: It was wonderfully cast, and the effects never got in the way of the story. The only problem was that it could have been a bit longer--how often do you say that about a movie?

Granted, the "Deluxe Edition" DVD doesn't have DTS; it does have Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding which should be sufficient for the vast majority of us. Video quality is good: On a scale of 1-5 I'd give it a slightly generous 4. The pairing of Barry Sonnenfeld and Tommy Lee Jones to do the voice-over commentary is inspired: They come at the film from totally different viewpoints. Disc 2 makes up a bit for the brevity of the film by including extended and alternate scenes. Admittedly, Disc 2 has lost some of its appeal - it feels somewhat dated, which it is - since it contains a "teaser trailer" of - and a "sneak peak" at - "MIB II", along with other filler like storyboards and production notes. And if you're pining for those days when MTV was playing Will Smith's titular video on the hour, it's there, too.

All things considered, the "MIB Deluxe Edition" DVD is a worthwhile addition to your library. Every few months I pop it in the player--the movie is short enough so that it won't consume the entire evening unless I subsequently start digging into the extras. Come to think of it, I don't really need the "Superbit" version....

Summary: A Funny Movie With Great Special Effects!
Review: I saw Men in Black a few nights ago on TNT and it was the first time that I have seen this movie and I thought it was very funny and the special effects were very impressive and I'm thinking of buying the movie on DVD. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith were both excellent and Rip Torn, Vincent D'Onofrio and Linda Fiorentino were all very good too and I highly recommend this movie!

Summary: An out of this world good time
Review: MIB was made for audiences to enjoy and it manages to do this in a variety of ways. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith play off each other really well which makes for lots of tough-in-cheek humor. Most of the aliens are also used for humor, as well, like the little ones addicted to coffee. Finally the situational humor is great from Will Smith's trials as he learns about the extra-terrestrial world to his one liners to his comments on guns. MIB and its actors do not take the movie to seriously which allows the audience to just have a good time watching the humorous action movie.

Summary: Pure Praise
Review: Pure Praise

I was surprised there were not more reviews about this movie. I suppose sarcasm is not everyone's cup of tea -- perhaps because sometimes it delivers a turd in the tea cup -- but this movie is explosive, fast paced, thoughtful, humorous, original, and even at times wise. Don't overlook it as Hollywood ooga booga it is a thoroughly grounded film. The plot is well constructed, the characters are thoroughly developed (there are even some genuinely emotional moments), the topic is zany yet plausible, and the scenery is fantastic. I love movies that make New York look like the city I know. See Spike Lee movies for this (he is, in my opinion, the best). Men in Black does a great job using the armory on Park Ave. and 25th street and the Meat Packing District, Downtown by the Hudson River, Flushing Meadows, the NJ Turnpike, the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel just to name a few key places. It's fun to sightsee while watching an 'alien' movie.

Beyond scenery, there is an overwhelming point to this movie also that sometimes gets overlooked. In one brilliant moment right after J (Will Smith) fires his weapon in public, K (Tommy Lee Jones) scolds his rookie partner to be more discreet by saying, "There's always an Archillion battlecruiser or an intergalactic plague threatening to wipe out life on this sorry little planet but the things that keeps people going on with their happy little lives is that they do not know about it." Tell that to the Republicans using the potential for terror attacks as a campaign tool. There are always and always have been a multitude of threats to every life. That's the emotional starting point from which we can honestly relate to this movie and these two nameless agents. What makes them true heroes is they are not only working for us but they are working without getting any acclaim, well, accept for from this movie.

The next thing is chemistry. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are great together. They play off each other well. The more you watch this movie the more you will laugh. Like all great things it gets better with time. There are little things like sudden changes in tone & slight raggings, that bring out the humor potential of both actors. The most underrated actor is Vincent D'Onofrio who plays Edgar/the Bug. Between the make-up, the voice, and the bizarre movements he actually becomes a bug. It's unbelievable how believable it is. This is no easy feat.

The last thing worth praise, is the music. The music performed by Danny Elfman is sarcastic and inventive to go along perfectly with the other aspects of the movie. He takes the traditional John Williams Star Wars and Indiana Jones riffs of heroism and inverts them and dismantles them to produce some of his own top notch melodies.

I think sometimes movies that are funny lack the acclaim they deserve. Just because it is going to make you laugh doesn't mean it isn't saying something. Look at Chris Rock or Kurt Vonnegut for examples of humor meant to tell you something that you couldn't bare to hear if it was told to you straight. Men In Black reminds me of Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" in that way. The movie works on many levels at once. In Swift's story he claims that the Irish should just eat their babies as to not have such a burdensome problem. Really he's attacking the society and the English. In Men in Black you have a very interesting view of society. That is, how much should we know? And how much to we want government to work in secret?

Final point, get this movie, you won't be disappointed.
