Summary: the DOOM generation... Sex. Murder. Violence. Anger
Review: "the DOOM generation" revolves around two companions: Amy and Jordan. They stumble upon Xavier, an obscure, violent, early-20's, post-trendied, socially-rebellious, type guy, who is now just rebellious because he likes it. Upon their road trip, a road trip with an undetermined destination, they encounter various [other] degenerates. Sex. Murder. Violence. Social Rebellion. Teen angst. All of which, bulid up to one of the most explosive, violent, film conclusion of the 1990's*. Available in both R-rated and(the NC-17 eqivalent)Unrated versions. The R-rated version has toned-down: sex scenes, explicit dialogue bits, some graphic shots of violence, and most of the ending is missing, all of which is restored in the Unrated (Director's Cut) version. I've seen both versions...go with the Unrated version even though the R-rated version is still plenty graphic and entertaining. Be warned...the R-rated version, almost completely excises the ending. Well, I constantly see "the DOOM generation" compared with Stone's "NBK". Should it be? Definently, because they both deal with anger and. for lack of a better word: rebellion. Well, I absolutely loved both "NBK" and "the DOOM generation". French director Gregg Araki's vision, unlike Stone's, is much more apparent to laymen. It's simple, concise, yet powerful. Araki and Stone, both wanted to convey social anger with their films. All I'm saying is that Araki's conveyence is not better than Stone's, just more concise---without sacrificing power, energy, or social commentary. *Refers to the Unrated version, only. R-rated version has an implied ending.

Summary: The worst movie I've ever seen
Review: I could make a list of 50 reasons why this movie is the worst road movie ever made. The first one is probably the fact there's no story. It's supposed to be a road movie and they spend quite some time on a car but they go nowhere, they are not afraid. They kill but they are never caught, never really worried. In the middle of the movie we hear about the polcie but we never hear of them again. The movie in itself is very repetitive: They kill, they have sex and they supposely go 'deeper'. First it's alright but when it continues 5 minutes before the end of the movie (very short, 80 minutes), you know there's something going wrong. I think the only "central" point of this movie is sex. I don't know if it's supposed to have psychological issues but I know you'll waste 80 minutes of your life if you see it.

Summary: A Self-Indulgent Mess
Review: Like the cast itself, this movie is so self-conscious and surface-obsessed, that it fails to impart anything meaningful or memorable. Even the "big ending" is horrifying in attempts to be humorous and vice versa. In short, utterly exhausting. In fairness, Araki's "The Living End" is much more honest and engaging.

Summary: You Either Love It or Hate It
Review: The reason that I give this film a FIVE is because my expectations were really low for this film at first. I had heard much about it and decided to rent it on DVD; man o man was I glad that I did. From the films opening, it seemed like just another one of those crappy films that with lots of violence and unmatching music. As the film progressed, the director got much better, the acting power increased, and the dialogue actually became pretty witty. It is definetly Gregg Araki's best work for NOWHERE was just a complete screw-up and SPLENDOR's story was already made into a film many times. Rose McGowan gave a rich performance (like always) and the directing by Gregg Araki was in a sense original; it fit the story mood and tense. The ending was perfect to this "road trip" kind of film, but I think that it could have been a bit prolonged and not ended so abruptly (a la BLACK AND WHITE). This is the kind of film that you either love or hate. Everyone will have a different opinion; it just depends on whether or not you give films like this a chance. There is a HUGE difference between the UNRATED and the RATED version...do not even bother watching the RATED version because the ending is all chopped up. A definite rent/buy type of film. Don't expect too much of it before watching it because then you'll hate it.

Review: What an over hyped [movie] from an over blown nobody director. Who the heck is Gregg Araki...and what has he contributed to film.... Araki is attemting to mimic John Waters style with his movies about nihilism, homosexuality and alienated youth, but he is not even remotely in the same league...In retrospect I don't know how I was coerced into watching this giant Thanksgiving turkey !This movie represents everything bad about movie making...meandering, pointless script, lousy actors, shoddy camera work, ripping off other films and wasting cinematic money....it's nihilistic rubbish maquerading as a supposed "art / indie" film.... Rose McGowan is such an uninteresting and unlikeable actress. Wasn't she in that stupid flick "Jawbreaker",....I'd like to bust her jaw after watching this [movie]! I spent the entire film trying to restrain myself from throttling her image on the movie screen....I wouldn't cast her in a dog food commercial ! Any one who raves about this celluloid needs to get out more often....and see better movies too !!

Summary: Sick Comic Masterpiece
Review: If you're into sick humor laced with lots of sex and violence, this movie is for you. It's a wild ride with X (the character) as the variable in the equation. There are cameos galores, and a show of gardening prowess, but this movie is a masterpiece for those willing to try something offbeat and off the map.

Summary: A reason why independent film is overrated
Review: A friend and I were talking recently and he brought up a fairly valid point. That point is related to independent film and the fact that it is, in some respect, quite overrated. Before 1996, there were independent films but there weren't as many as today. These independent films didn't get much notice because no one knew what they were. But after indies swept the oscars for 1996, movie studios went nuts by signing on independent film actors and directors and setting up film production companies. Now to be honest, lots of independent film is overrated. They do have something to say, but some of them just suck. They can get compulsively boring with stories you just don't want to know about. Film schools have scores of film school grads eager to make independent films for their shot in. I guiltily admit I'm one of them, but I want to go commercial too and attempt to make movies people will like. Now, for an independent film like "The Doom Generation", this film was just bad, disgusting, and undeniably gross. The story goes nowhere, if there is a story. It's awful. I really can't describe a plot because there isn't one, just like the director's "Nowhere" in which the title says it all despite boasting a lot of familiar people. Newsweek and the NY Post said it was a great film. What film? There wasn't a plot, it was just a waste of celluloid. If you want to see something good, don't see this.

Summary: Cool, but weird, but Cool movie
Review: the first time i saw the cover of this movie it looked pretty cool. 2 years later i started working at the movie place where i saw that cover, and the movie disappeared from the shelf, from the computer and even employees that worked there for over 10 years said that we never had that movie... after getting the unrated version on DVD, i can see why this movie vanished off our shelves( a little town with very protective mothers can be a bad and very powerful force ) the version i have is 83 minutes versus the 75 minute version offered here. but the movie is cool nomatter what version you get! although i admit some scenes were a little too much for me to handle, it's still a weird, but cool experence to witness

Summary: Powerful and affecting piece of cinema
Review: When I first saw this movie, I laughed at the black humour it portrayed throughout. But then the ending came. Think of any movie that leaves a powerfull, shocking impression that lasts. This could best almost any. Its main concern is on the entropy of modern culture- it is done so powerfully that I was affected by it for days, which is a lot for a person who has seen much and become desensitized to video portrayles of violence. It wasn't the violence that was affecting in this movie: it was the very relevant, sad message it contained. Watch it with an open mind. While there is extreme violence and sex, the focus isn't truly on that. It's on modern entropy and a modern hell on earth. The ending is one of the most gripping, powerful scenes in cinema ever. I compare it to the ending in "Boys Don't Cry." I recomend both- they might move you, possibly more than you like. If you like Marilyn Manson, Anton LaVey, or even the video game Silent Hill, you will understand what most never will about this story: that it is important, moving, relevant. Summary: - 200 stars, Not worthy of title : WORST MOVIE OF MY LIFE
Review: I am : 22 year old, open minded, lover of movies of all kinds. I am extremely liberal, there was nothing in this movie that shocked me. I have seen gory movies that I loved, I have seen movies with gratuitious : SEX, Nudity, violence, bad language, poor acting, depravity, that I loved. I have seen movies that try to shock you just for the sake of it or that had no redeemable value whatsoever that I have enjoyed. There are even the kind of movies "that are so bad they are good", that I have enjoyed. The point I'm trying to make is that Whilst I love "classic" good movies : Apocalypse Now, Heat, Blade Runner, Blue velvet, 2001 Space Oddysey, I am in no way a movie "snob". I also enjoy thrashy movies whose only motive is to entertain you for 2 hours. This movie is just a bad movie, its not a "cult" movie, you can't try to make a cult movie it just becomes one. As far as portraying Generation X, or "teenage apocalypse", or "whatever",I being a member of it did not relate to anything onscreen. Take this movie as having a message : it sucks. Take this movie as having No message : it sucks. Take this movie as pure thrashy entertainment : it sucks. Take this movie as a post modern, 90's self referentialistic, "Daring to go where other movies don't go" movie : You guessed it IT STILL SUCKS. THIS MOVIE IS JUST A WASTE OF YOUR TIME. You can even smoke a big joint, hell you can smoke crack and watch this movie it still SUCKS !!! Now you may ask yourself, if there is nothing I liked about this movie why am writing this review ?? Well because I wished somebody had told me this before I rented this crap. Don't even rent this out of curiosity...... who gives this guy the money to make his movies ??? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
