Summary: Horrendously MISUNDERSTOOD!
Review: Judging from the negative reviews and the people who found them helpful, I have to ask this question: How many of the jokes did you actually understand? If all you could understand were the parts involving fart jokes and sitting on forks, then you're not getting anything from the movie. If you didn't enjoy this, then hey--fine. Go ahead and go back to watching "Seinfeld" or an Adam Sandler film. The jokes in there are about as subtle as a a gasoline truck crashing through your backyard. You'll be able to understand those jokes and be able to laugh.

Summary: A bad film...but it's supposed to be.
Review: I think some people took this film a little too seriously. Yes, it's a bad film, very much in the "B" move style, but it's supposed to be. It's a lighthearted spoof on all the superhere films. It's not supposed to be side-splittingly funny, just humerous. Watch it second time. It WILL grow on you.

Summary: Flaming Carrot
Review: Does nobody even know who the Mysterymen or Bob Burden is around here? Apparently, not many are into 80's underground comics(big surprise to me). To really enjoy this movie, you have to be familliar with the Mysterymen comics. My only complaint is that there weren't enough deaths. The Mysterymen are supposed to have the highest casualty AND kill rate of any superhero team. But still, it was a great flick with lots of laughs and its great to see The Mysterymen (some of 'em, anyway) on the big screen. I just wish people'd do a little bit more research into something before they criticize it (its more than just your average superhero spoof).

Summary: You'll LOVE it, or HATE it.... it's an infectious passion!
Review: Ever have cult favorites? The kind of movie that didn't necessarily make it that big, and, perhaps, that's part of the reason you like it... The offbeat, the edge, the "I was in a weird mood at the time" kind of film. Presenting "Mystery Men." It's a visual drug that I've been pushing on my wife who now enjoys it almost as much as I do. It's one of those movies that you find something new & funny EVERY time you see it, while the things you used to laugh at you laugh at even more. It's insane. It's campy. It's a masterpiece. We bought the DVD and enjoyed it on a new level with Director Kinka Usher's comments; FUNNY and informative!

I think you'll find a little bit of yourself in all of the misfit super heroes in this movie. Macey is awesome, Stiller is hilarious, and Azaria shines... "What the Fork!" This is a character movie. Plot is just the background. The cast is very strong and the chemistry is high. The messages are positive (kid-safe) and funny, where the heroes laugh at their enemy because they're using guns... "couldn't you be more creative than that? That's your power? GUNS?"

If you're looking for a silly, offbeat film (you liked Cable Guy but never found anyone else who did) - don't hesitate! Where else have you seen a powerful super hero pass out just after yelling, "Aw, DANG!"? What a treasure.

Summary: THEY'RE "TERRIBLY MYSTERIOUS"
Review: Before you even bother to watch this film, first check that you meet the following criteria- 1)you enjoy comic fantasy type movies, 2) You like slapstick/spoof humour, 3)You are completely immature. If that sounds like you then you will find ths movie very, very funny.

The fun begins when Captain Amazing is captured by one of his arch nemisis,Casanova Frankenstein, without there #1 super hero the safety of Champion City is in peril. Up step the Shoveler, Mr Furious and the Blue Raja. Never before have such unnerving super heroes hit the streets, with their respective abilities to shovel, get angry and throw forks and spoons they see themselves as the ideal candidates to save Captain Amazing. Their adventures give many a laugh, and along the way they recruit some more team members such as a boy who can turn invisible - but only when no one is looking and the Spleen who uses flatulence to knock out his opponents.

Basically this is just a silly movie, it doesn't try or pretend to be anything else. It doesn't always quite hit the mark, sometimes falling into the trap of using already overdone cliches, but above all, it does make you laugh a lot which, i'm sure is its main priority.

Although this movie isn't a classic, it is very funny and the quality of acting and the cast list as well as the ample supply of features on the dvd make this a movie that should be in your collection. The dvd picture quality handles the dark colors of Champion City perfectly whilst the explosive sounds are exactly that. Watching Mystery Men is an exteremly enjoyable comic romp.

Summary: Shockingly good superhero also-ran comedy!
Review: It's with an uncharacteristic lack of cynicism that I pronounce "Mystery Men" one of the films of 1999. The dialogue is hilarious, the casting inspired, the action brilliantly (and deliberately) shambling, and the story a refreshing, welcome change from that of typical superhero fare. You know the story, which centres around a bunch of farcical, pathetic wannabe superheros, deliriously envious of the pretty boy, Pepsi-sponsored superhero 'Captain Amazing', played with tongue firmly in cheek by Greg Kinnear. It's remarkably subversive humour for a PG-rated film so obviously aimed at children, that it comes off with the same satirical bite as, say, "The Simpsons". Comparisons with the aforementioned animated yellow people are accelerated by the movie's cartoon-like nature, remarkable attention to detail, and the wealth of diverse and interesting characters. It's safe to say that you'll never see a film quite like "Mystery Men", and that alone makes it worth investigation.

Summary: A Funny Movie With Substance
Review: This movie is great. It has one of the best ensemble casts of the year (including Ben Stiller, Janeane Garagola, Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush, Oscar nominess William H. Macy and Greg Kinnear, Hank Azaria, as well as Kel Mitchell from Nickelodeon's "All That" and "Kenan and Kel") and has a great script, etc. etc. I really enjoyed the film and I recommend it to any comic book or comedy fan.

Summary: Lots of fun
Review: Maybe I am being a bit too generous just because I grew up as a big fan of comic books, but I was very pleased with this movie. I really think you have to read a few comic books to really appreciate ths film. The laughs kept coming as they knocked Superman's identity, the Batman films and a number of other superhero cliches. I found most of the characters good except Ben Stiller's Mr. Furious Character got old pretty fast. The special effects and set were well done, the city and opening theme obviously a poke at the overblown Batman films. The big fight at the end is great with a large variety of villains. This film is not for everyone, I think it probably would have done better if it had been made between 1992 and 1994 when comic books were at a peak. I do think this film will have a cult following on video. It kind of reminds me of the Clue film from 1986 because it is kind of a different premise that gives some really good supporting comedians a chance to shine. Very amusing, but not for everyone.

Summary: Too bad you can't rate this as zero stars
Review: I'm a big fan of the entire cast, but I have got to say this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I saw this in the theater with a friend because we were laughing our butts off when we saw the theatrical trailer... the trailer and the famous and funny cast were all we needed to plunk down $7 to see this in the theater.

In the first 5 minutes, I turned to my friend and apologized for dragging them to this horrible show. The opening scenes alone probably cost several million to make... this was an expensively made film and a lot of talent went into it, but it fell on it's face.

There were lots of kids in the theater... and kids will usually laugh at slapstick... but most of the time the people in the theater were so quiet, you could hear the second-hand on people's watches ticking away. The only time I heard audible laughter were a couple of muffled and brief cackles at the flatulence jokes. That is just plain sad that the only part of a movie that is remotely funny involves passing gas.

As bad as the first 10 minutes of the movie were, my friend and I agreed that it couldn't get worse and we should give it a shot. We were wrong. This is the first and only movie that was so bad that I actually asked for my money back when it was over (and yes, they gave it to me). I felt like I lost 2 hours of my time that I can never get back... it was that awful.

I don't know if it was the script, the directing or what... something was just missing. The timing was off. It was like I totally understood what was supposed to be funny about a scene, but nothing in the scene provoked laughter.... I don't think it was necessarily because it wasn't "sophisticated" for me... I saw "There's Something About Mary," which is full of cheesy/gross/kid humor that had me doubled over in laughter. This film was a waste of money, talent and celluloid, in my opinion and in the opinion of the few people I've talked to that actually saw this film.

I've seen some bad films in my day, but man - this movie was just plain terrible... it promised an entertaining comedy and instead delivered a product that was akin to sitting in a corporate meeting for 2 hours that accomplishes nothing but wasting your time.

Summary: Good movie, and the feature-packed DVD makes it worth it.
Review: The movie itself was great. Stellar performances from the entire cast. Great humor. The good thing about this film is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. While you're watching it, just remember that it originated as a comic book series. The director actually did a very good job of preserving the comic book feel.

Be warned, though ... if you're going to buy the movie, buy it on DVD. There are just so many cool extras on the DVD that the VHS version just isn't worth it. From the original theatrical trailer to the MYSTERY MEN music video, the DVD is packed with tons of unique features. Universal did a great job with this one.
