Shirley Python ... Esme A newly divorced Gloria Mundy (Goldy Hawn) picks up a hitchkiker, Bob Scott (Bruse Solomon) on California's Highway One north of San Francisco. He is being followed. He makes a date with Gloria for the theater that evening, and gives her a pack of Marlboros into which he puts a roll of film without her knowledge to hold for her. He shows up at the theater, collapses in the seat beside her and dies, after telling her to "beware the dwarf" and that there would be a murder. When she goes for help, the body disappears. Enter Detective Tony Carlson (Chevy Chase), whom she had met previously at a party. The bad guys try to kill her a couple of times, and to get the pack of smokes, unsuccessfully. This is an excellent story with a great cast. Pity the dwarf Bible salesman, poor unlucky Stanley Tibbets (Dudley Moore) and the owners of all of the cars wrecked in the chase across town. Review: After his meteoric rise in popularity from starring in the inaugural season of the ongoing, late-night TV comedy variety show "Saturday Night Live" (1975-), now veteran film actor Chevy Chase effectively began his big-screen career along side veteran big-screen comedic actress Goldie Hawn in the hilarious 1978 film "Foul Play". Taking place in the beautiful city of San Francisco, the single librarian Gloria Mundy (Goldie Hawn) becomes unwittingly entangled in a mysterious terrorist plot to kill Pope Pius XIII (Cyril Magnin, 1899-1988) when (while visiting San Francisco) he attends a performance of the 1885 opera "The Mikado" by William S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900). After Gloria witnesses a brutal killing and escapes an attempt on her own life, she is interviewed by bumbling San Francisco police detective Lt. Tony Carlson (Chevy Chase). Not totally convinced about her seemingly outlandish story of being attacked by an albino (William Frankfather, 1944-1998, in his big-screen debut) or the warnings she received about a dwarf, Tony nonetheless keeps a watchful eye upon Gloria whom he is attracted to. As Gloria continues to evade the killers, she meets the satyrical musical conductor Stanley Tibbets (the hilarious Dudley Moore, 1935-2002) and mistakenly confuses a short & innocent bible-salesman, J.J. MacKuen (Billy Barty, 1924-2000), to be the infamous dwarf. With a myriad of chase scenes, wistful dialog, unusual characters, Hitchcockian mystery and 1970's nostalgia, "Foul Play" is sure to bring a smile to most viewer's faces.
Memorable scenes in the film include Gloria meeting Stanley for the first time, Stanley's apartment, J.J. MacKuen at Gloria's front door, Gloria visiting J.J. at the hospital, the "massage" club, Gloria's friend & landlord Mr. Hennessey (Burgess Meredith, 1908-1997) taking on Delia Darrow (Rachel Roberts, 1927-1980), trying to get to the opera house, the Japanese couple (Rollin Moriyama, 1907-1992, and Mitsu Yashima) and the "Mikado" performance. Other memorable characters include Gloria's friend Stella (Marilyn Sokol), Archbishop Thorncrest/Archbishop's brother (Eugene Roche, 1928-2004), Rupert Stiltskin (Marc Lawrence), The Turk (Ion Teodorescu, 1934-1985), the truck driver (M. James Arnett) and Esme the snake (Shirley Python). Overall, I rate "Foul Play" with 5 out of 5 stars and am very happy to see it finally released on DVD. In an interesting bit of trivia, the name "Gloria Mundy" was derived from the Latin phrase, "Sic transit gloria mundi," which means, "So passes the glory of the world."

Review: As a great fan of this movie, I have been waiting for this film to be released on to DVD for sometime. One of the best comedies of all time. Goldie (Gloria) is super in this role and Chevy (Tony) is at his best... And who could forget the late Dudley Moore in the role of Stanley Tibbetts, from the moment I saw this movie, the song Stayin Alive has been forever altered in my mind seeing him girate around his flat pulling out everything the (then) pervert needed for a night of passion. Great Film, will enjoy again and again....

Review: Director Alfred Hitchcock, "The Master Of Suspense", has been imitated, spoofed, paid tribute to, and even remade. The 1978 comedy/thriller Foul Play is both a send-up and tribute to the Hitchcock legacy. It's a fun film that benefits from great chemistry between its two stars and a memorable appearance by the late Dudley Moore.
Sweet, unassuming librarian Gloria Mundy (Goldie Hawn) is told by her friend that she should go out and have some fun. Soon after, she decides to go out on a date, taking a few risks. Problems arise, when she stumbles upon a plot to assasinate the Pope, who will be visiting San Francisco soon. When Gloria realizes she's been marked for murder, she goes to detective Tony Carlson (Chevy Chase) for help. Together the twosome set out to unravel the murder plot. Along the way they encounter a mysterious midget (Billy Barty), a deadly albino (William Frankfather), a wild swinger named Stanley (Moore), vanishing corpes, and much more, culminating in a frewheeling night at the opera house. As they make their way from one comedic danger to another, Gloria and Tony might just be falling in love with each other.
Writer/director Colin Higgins certainly knows how to pay homage to Hitchcock and make us laugh. The pairing of Hawn and Chase (in his first film--following his departure from Saturday Night Live) There are plenty of sparks between the pair. The cast also benefits from a lively turn from Burgess Meredith as Mr. Hennessey Gloria's landlord, Marilyn Sokol as her cracking wise coworker Stella, and a small role for Brian Dennehy as Fergie, Tony's partner. Thankfully, Chase's hallmark pratfalls are kept to a minimum, allowing him to "act" The film suffers from being a bit dated--stuck in the 70's for sure. But it's Hawn, Chase and lots of fun that make Foul Play work.
The disc has no extras on it. This is a shame but not entirely unexpected. Something retrospective may have been fun though.
Filled with many chuckles--this film is a feast for those who are Hitchcock fans and have a sense of humor.

Review: Finally we get Foul Play on DVD and in its original aspect ratio. The movie has it all: comedy, suspense, drama, all wrapped up in to one very enjoyable movie. It's going on the shelf right next to my Alfred Hitchcock collection.

Summary: Goldie is Golden!
Review: Foul Play is simply one of the best comedies of all time. I've never seen Goldie Hawn or Chevy Chase funnier or sexier. Barry Manilow's hit song "Ready to Take a Chance Again" summarizes the life of Goldie's character, Gloria, a San Francisco librarian who stumbles onto a plot to assassinate the Pope and is in danger because she knows too much. Throughout it all, she manages to fall for the cop assigned to protect her. I will never forget the line "beware of the dwarf," and memorable scenes such as the car chase with the Japanese immigrants in the backseat, the old ladies playing x-rated Scrabble and Burgess Meredith in an unexpected karate battle with Rachel Roberts. Bravo! Actress Marilyn Sokol stands out as Gloria's best friend with a handbag full of mace and brass knuckles. Hilarious with great lines, a taste of scenic San Francisco, top-notch direction and sharp acting adds up to one of the finest comedies in movie history. I've seen this movie at least ten times and it never fails to make me laugh. Sit back and enjoy!

Summary: Hilarious Side-Splitting Laughs!
Review: I found this movie totally hilarious with sidesplitting laughter, I laughed my butt off! Many funny scenes including the old ladies who were using vulgar words in their game of scrabble. Goldie Hawn was so funny and adorable in this movie and Chevy Chase was so funny, and cute, they had great chemistry and it's a shame they only made two movies together! Their Other movie, Seems Like Old Times Was a very good movie too and both have tons of belly busting laughs especially Foul Play! Also great in this movie is Dudley Moore who in scene stealing scenes plays a perverted loser!

Summary: San Francisco at its Best!
Review: Once you see the lead in to the movie with Barry Manilow singing "Ready To Take a Chance Again" and sweet and pretty Goldie Hawn driving south on Highway 1 to downtown...you are hooked.
The view of the coast with the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge is so beautiful it can make you cry. Believe me, it is even more beautiful when you are there. Everything is here in one movie - action, comedy, satire, thrills, car chases, etc. Chevy Chase is young, dashing and handsome while a good supporting actress is Goldie's sidekick at the Library where they work. She advises Goldie to give it to them "right in the nuts" with a knuckle duster. Beware, her handbag has more weapons than cosmetics. Burgess Meredith is superb as a compact ex-US Marine turned anthropologist. He is old but a helluvaa tough guy and.. he's a Karate expert to boot. Dudley Moore is hilarious with his beaver trap apartment complete with piped in Bee Gees music. You'll never hear "Staying Alive" again without remembering this scene and Dudley's hilarious gyrations. Watch this movie and you'll be happy you did. I loved it.
