Rating: Summary: It's good, give it a chance Review: I liked it alot. In a roundabout way it's like the soul-sucessor of Risky Business, amalgamed with A Walk to Remember. Yes the plot is old and recyled but the reason a storyline like this one is used and used up is because sometimes all the pieces fall right and you get magic. This is one of thoes times. The performances are good all around, the soundtrack does just what a soundtrack should, compliments the movie beautifully. There's genuine romance, and emotion(the characters were so fleshed out I found myself thinking about what I'd do in the main characters shoes), there's parts of taingable danger(a kick movies like this have been screaming for sence they were first contrived) and for a while the movie feels like it's veering towards tragety just untill the happy ending I wound up rooting for. Casting was inspired putting Elisha Cuthbert in the role that's every teenage guy's wetdream come true. It's one of thoes movies I don't even need to see twice before I know I'm going to buy it as soon as it comes out. On a budget like mine that's the best compliment it can get.
Rating: Summary: Classic Review: I saw this movie by accident. The movie that my friends and I wanted to see was sold out, and we decided to sit in on this one, mainly because Elisha Cuthbert is SMOKING!Anyway, needless to say I didn't expect much of this movie. And my was I quite pleasantly surprised. I was amazed by the performances of Emile Hirsch and of Elisha Cuthbert, and of the ensembles as well. Danielle's "pimp" was quite a well-played character, and I must give the actor his due (though I can't bring his name to mind right now). This movie is a wonderful blend of heart, humor, fantasy (please, who wouldn't want Elisha Cuthbert to move in next door), and downright SEX APPEAL. The movie keeps you enticed at all times watching the relationship between the leads develop, all the way to the VERY surprising and rewarding ending. After this having been our begrudged fall-back, my friends and I walked out of the theater, and all we could say was, "Wow". None of us could find more eloquent words to describe the movie. Throughout the entire 20 minute drive from the theater, no words came to mind. This movie is well worth buying. You should probably get the soundtrack too, since it is some sweet music.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't stop laughing Review: The girl next door is a hilarious comedy about a boy named Mathew (Emile Hirsch) whose new neighbor Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert) is a girl he falls in love with. He then finds out she is a porn star, he then makes a dumb mistake of trying to sleep with her just because she's a porn star. Danielle then thinks Mathew is an a**, then Mathew realizes he can stop carrying about Danielle. Then a porn producer comes along, which then dislikes Mathew because he's taking Danielle away from the porn business. Mathew raised $25,000 to get the next Einstein from Cambodia, The producer lost $30,000 from losing Danielle from a porn movie, he then steals the 25,000 from Mathew, then its up to Mathew and his pals to come up with the money. This is a really funny movie. It shows a great message in saying, porn stars are people too. This is another teen classic comedy like the American Pie series. It has classic scenes with acceptable performances. This film could be romantic in a way girls would say. I guess it was. This film has great cameos. From the director of the "Animal", if you love teen comedies like American Pie, Not another Teen movie, and old school teen classics like "Porkys, you will definitely like this film. This film has some nudity like other teen comedies, so I'm just warning people who get offended by that kind of material. This is a great romantic/comedy about living as a teen. I highly recommend you watch this film, it is a definite must see.
Rating: Summary: A surprisingly good film. Review: Whoever reviewed this for amazon.com obviously didn't look too hard when researching his first couple lines. This did NOT in fact receive a "nearly unanimous" beating from critics. It was mixed, and according to rottentomatoes.com, it had more positive reviews than negative (with a 58% rotten rating, just 2% shy of being fresh). As for the movie itself, I love it. I was surprised to love it because I've never been a huge fan of comedies, but I thought it was sweet and funny. There were moments that were just amazing in the movie. Elisha Cuthbert is perfect and Hirsch does a great job as well. I also want to reiterate this isn't normally my type of movie (my 3 favorite movies are Usual Suspects/Shawshank/Almost Famous), so the fact that I love it so much is quite surprising even to me. I'd give it 4.5/5 but since it has to be 4 or 5, i'll say 4, mainly because the cover of the unrated dvd (and the rated dvd) look absolutely terrible (change the cover before it comes out!!).
Rating: Summary: Risque' Business Review: Within the first twenty minutes of THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, you know very well what kind of movie you are watching. Unfortunately, five minutes later you'll find you were completely wrong. It starts as a fun examination of teen angst but heads off into a completely different direction. The flick borrows liberally from the early teen comedies of John Hughes and Cameron Crowe. Films such as Sixteen Candles, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Weird Science are emulated early on. But this film leaves the high school circuit and heads into the not-so-comic world of Porno film. From that point on the filmmakers try to find balance between teen comedy and dark comedy. That disparate balance is the films largest drawback. The youth are sufficient in their roles with none standing out like Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack or Molly Ringwald. Elisha Cuthbert of televisions 24 plays the porn star with low self esteem. Her role - and outfits- are very revealing and she does an admirable job. Timothy Olyphant puts in a "Kenickie-like" performance as a porn producer that connects the high school and porn film worlds. He film has moments of enjoyment, but some of the darker scenes are more reminiscent of SOMETHING WILD and AFTER HOURS, very out of step with the films outward appearances. Probably a good 'wait for the DVD' release.
