Summary: Crazy Carrots
Review: Enter The Hall Monitor.

I saw this gem at some flim flam festival in Atlantic City and it made feel a whole lot better about losing all my money. I've been looking for it ever since 1999. . . and finally, here it is.

Now I can finally prove to my friends that I wasn't dreaming about the flick with the best frog dissection scene ever.

This movie is funny and funny.

Summary: Guns, Fist Fights, T&A, in a High School Power Struggle
Review: Guns, Fist Fights, T&A, Cel Phones, and a bloody political struggle... in High School.

Awesome.

I had the chance to speak with the Filmmakers and the star at the Atlantic City Film Festival. They made a great impression and won a couple of awards there a few years ago.

Set in Rocky Mountain High School, The Hall Monitor Tells the story of killer in spiked hair and spiked leather jewelry lurking the halls, systematically killing members of the School Football Team, the Ragin' Rocky Mountain Carrots. The only force within the school powerful enough to stop this killer is the High School "Hall Monitor" and his 357 Magnum... the same "most powerful handgun in the world" used by "Dirty" Harry Callahan.

If this description makes you think of The Columbine Tragedy, it might be of interest to note that this film was actually written and shot a full year before the Columbine Tragedy 4 years ago.

On The Surface, The Hall Monitor is a low budget black comedy set in high school. In reality, it's a low budget black comedy set in high school... with a slyly subversive sense of satire and social criticism.

Presumably shelved for four years due to the Contraversy over The Columbine Tragedy, The Hall Monitor pokes fun high school violence in a way that forces us to question the ultimate causes of teenage violence in today's society.

Ultimately though, Adolescent Violence is not what the Hall Monitor is intended to be about. This film is legitimately using High School as a microcosmic metaphor for the larger world of western culture on the whole. The Hall Monitor shows us a world in which teenage girls are treated like sex objects by the culture at large and unpopular kids kill popular kids out of vengeance and the most popular kid in school is ultimately the one who carries the biggest gun and kicks the most butt.

But don't worry, there's plenty of sexual humor, nudity, pre-matrix era fight scenes and general silliness to keep you amused... if you don't care about any of that stuff.

In one sense their world is seen by the filmmakers as sheer absurdity. It is obvious that their vision of this world is one of farce. A funny thing has happened in the years since the film was shot... Reality caught up with the Farce. Adolescent Teenage Culture is really not so far off from the film's absurdist sense of that world.

What occurs when the film is viewed with this in mind is striking. Far from feeling out of date, the film takes on a far more biting and in some ways true feeling sense of Swiftian Satire.

While The Hall Monitor may have been intended as an Absurdist look into Popular Culture set in a "Typical American High School," what it has become is a Sharp and Painfully Ironic Satire on the Absurd Nature of what is now Typical American Teenage High School Life.

While this makes for a far less sensitive film, it may in fact make for a more relevant one.

Seeing the film and meeting the folks behind it piqued my interest and since then, I've learned much about the film from its website...

If you have any bit of an off beat sense of humor or if you've ever survived either High School or the Movie business, this sucker is not to be missed.

Summary: Crazy Carrots
Review: I must say I didn't understand much of this movie but the Giant Carrot running around in it. It made me laugh. I also liked Spaceballs and Snow Dogs. But this movie is in a High School enviroment, and the characters are off the hook! Especially I heard about extra scenes and bloopers stuff on the DVD. Thank you.

Summary: The Greatest Story Ever Told
Review: I saw this award-winning movie at the Atlantic City Film Festival--and it changed my life. The Hall Monitor is the story of one faithful young dreamer, the true love he longs to hold close to his heart, and his brave struggle against a system that is determined to keep them apart. This movie has eveything--comedy, tears, romance, and a deep message about the all-too-human yearning for acceptance, justice, and peace among our fellow man. A must-see.

Summary: Meet Your New Favorite Film...
Review: I saw this Film a few years ago at a special screening at Penn State University, had a chance to meet the filmmakers and cast and essentially had a blast with the whole experience. Watch it once and I'm sure this movie will quickly jump to the top of your Favorite Cult Film list. It takes place in a world somewhere between Sixteen Candles and Dirty Harry, with a Magnum toting ' Cheap suit wearing - One-liner delivering Hall Monitor, who's hellbent on keeping order among the student population of Rocky Mountain High. He's not the only unusual character at this school, as there's also the evil Guidance Counselor, a Giant Carrot, the Ultra-Violent Football Team, cup smothering, shoe stabbing, assembly executions and last, but not least, NAKED CHEERLEADERS!!! Whew, that was a mouthful. The guys who did this movie must have been crazy, as they did it for very little money, but they made up for it with a very talented cast, an incredibly funny script and a couple of Very Big Brass Ones (If you know what I mean). This movie easily ranks up there with the early films of such great directors as Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson with cartoonish violence, tons of quotable lines and cult characters that you can get behind and root for. I have been dying to get this on DVD since first seeing it, but now the wait is almost over. Do yourself a favor and buy this disc, you'll be glad you did.

Summary: Troma does it again!
Review: In the grand tradition of Toxie and Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD comes Dan Kashwood - The Hall Monitor! Dealing death and judgement in the halls of a 'typical' high school, this character stands alone as one of the most offensive and hilarious heroes ever to grace a Troma movie.

For a low budget shoot-em-up comedy it holds together pretty well. The middle tends to drag a bit (hence the 4 stars) but it builds to such a ridiculous cilmax that it's a minor complaint.

Like many of the reviewers I saw this flick at a film festival in AC like 2 years ago and am thrilled it will finally be available on DVD. Troma usually loads their discs with extras. Will there be any on THM?! I hope so. If you're not easily offended give this one a look. Destined to become a cult classic, at least in my collection.

Summary: Great piece of independent film making!
Review: Ok - I might be biased since I worked on the film, but I have yet to work on another film where the budget was low and the talent was high!

It is too bad that this movie has now almost become a social commentary on the violence we see in schools - while that was not the point of the film it is hard not to see how the kids in middle and high school "Get caught up in all of the BS" to quote Dan, the Hall Monitor.

I agree with one of the other reviews that it does lag a bit in the middle but it's a great film none the less! One I am happy to have in my collection!

Summary: Makes Columbine look like a slow ride to grandma's house
Review: There are many little touches in this low budget feature, raising it to a level which can be appreciated by a wider spectrum of viewers than a lesser film would have had. It gets the stars because of its originality and creativity within budget limitations, "Must-See"-ability for any aspiring no-budget filmmakers, and the Triumph of the Nerds! Definitely worth checking out.
