Summary: Quite impressive! Margaret Cho steals the film!
Review: A great film exploring personal identity in culture and class. Dante basco does a wonderful job in his portrayal of an Asian boy who was adopted and raised in a Black family. Great development of characters and of the relationships between the characters.

Margaret Cho steals the show with her role as an exchange student who has been accidentally dropped off at the wrong host family but learns to soak up the culture throughout the movie. Now you KNOW that's gonna be hilarious!

Check out this movie. It's really good. The storyline moves smoothly and the acting is great in this multi-racial film. Pam Grier is excellent as the matriarch in the film.

Summary: funny movie; pokes fun at stereotypes
Review: I decided to check out this movie because of the story. An asian boy is adopted by a black family who raises him with all the love and attention they can give him. I have never heard of a story like this, so I checked it out. And it was entertaining.

All is well for the family while living in their hometown of Atlanta. It's when they move to L.A. that trouble starts.

The asian boy is accused of 'being black' by all the people he meets. Others prove this point out to him because he is dating a black girl.

There is also a subplot of an exchange student from china that really adds nothing to the story other then some comic relief.

When the film is over, we learn that it's not trying to be this or that. We all are being ourselves and their is nothing wrong with that.

This movie makes you think about who you really are and if skin color supposedly dictates the way you act and talk. The stereotypes are overplayed, with the geeky asian exchange student and the drug dealers with their low riders. But in the end, it's all harmless fun and makes one appreciate that these are just stereotypes. Everyone is different and acts their own ways.

Summary: Good film!
Review: I enjoyed this film very much - there was real meaning attached and no one got killed or raped like in 99% of hollywood films. Good message, i liked it.

Summary: has its moments, but not great
Review: I got this movie used for 4 bucks at Blockbuster video. Being Asian American, I guess the premise intrigued me. So I watched it, and honestly, it wasn't all that great. The movie has an entertaining first half, with a few original set pieces worth mentioning. One scene has Dante "Rufio" Basco, a bunch of black folk, and an old Korean man playing dozens on a streetcorner. Another takes place in a Japanese restaurant, and effectively contrasts Dante Basco's "blackness" with his newfound girlfriend Tatyana Ali's "non-blackness." Yet another takes place in a Chinese restaurant, with a wannabe-black Asian waiter getting into a tussle with Rufio.

Sound intersting? Yeah some parts are, but it's just too bad the movie's execution isn't on par with its potential. Right off the bat, the film hits you with a scene that shows Rufio as a little kid. Granted, the little Asian kid is supposed to be talking with a black accent, so they decide to dub the 5 year old's voice with an articulate 20 year old's. I was shaking my head. Plus, Dante Basco needs to practice his trade. Not that it's easy trying to portray an Asian kid who's "black" on the inside, but his acting in some scenes is laughingly bad. Then we have Margaret Cho with her cartoon immigrant accent, a Tai Chi motif that's pretty ridiculous if you think about it, and a second half that loses its comic flavor. Plus, the ending is so fairy-tale like, it feels like a cop out.

My advice? Rent it when you're bored.

Summary: Hilarious
Review: This is a very funny film, but with some serious undertones. Why is it only available DVD? Now I know why I haven't been able tofind it in the VHS section of my local video store. It has a lot to say about the Asian and African American encounter in L.A. Anyone who lives here, will die laughing at this film.

Summary: OH MY GOSH! TATYANA ALI!
Review: This is an excellent movie! That's probbaly why it cost so much...20 whole dollars for a vhs tape? This movie shows good acting! and it shows Tatyana Ali kissing an asian guy. So if you're asian or philipino and u like Tatyana Ali, you'll like this movie too. AND... it's also FUNNY! But about the plot... the main character, asian guy..Julian, beats up the workers at the restaurant. The script writer could have added HOW he learned how to fight like that. Julian's lucky for kissing Tatyana Ali, aint he!
