Description:

The sophomore slump (as in sophomoric, lowest-common-denominator humor of the mostly unfunny kind) continues for Behind the Music that Sucks with "Cherry Poppin' Pop Stars," the second compilation of heavy.com's parodies of VH1's popular Behind the Music series. That's not to say that a lot of people won't eat this stuff up. On the contrary, Behind the Music that Sucks is tailor made for fans of South Park, Tom Green, and others who specialize in the kind of cruel, vulgar broadsides this show fires at the launches of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, 'N Sync, the Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain, and more (some of whom actually deserve it). Some will find much hilarity in the description of Sisqo as "an abrasive, hyperactive weasel," or the depiction of 'N Sync as washed up and pathetic 10 years down the road, or the general dissing of one-hit wonders like the Bloodhound Gang and Chumbawamba. But the endless phallic humor and scatological references, the preoccupation with homosexuality, death, and violence, and the episodes' various other puerile tendencies become numbing in a hurry. After all, how much time can you spend staring at a hideously distorted reflection in a funhouse mirror? In the end, the only thing that really sucks about Behind the Music that Sucks (which includes an "American Suck Countdown" in addition to the nine individual episodes) is the show itself. --Sam Graham
