Stage diva Elaine Stritch stars in Two's Company as Dorothy McNab, a strong-willed American novelist living in London, who hires a snobbish, chauvinist, and very British butler named Robert (Donal Sinden). Their endlessly combative relationship drives this clever and sharp-tongued 1970s sitcom merrily forward. Episodes center around hosting dinner for an American senator, hiring an electrician, watching cricket, or Robert twisting his ankle, but the set-up is little more than a flimsy pretext for these two impeccable performers to go at it. The chemistry between Stritch and Sinden is obvious, as their rich sardonic voices volley to and fro like a verbal game of squash. The guest stars are little more than props or furniture, around which this consummate pair dance and spar; it's just a bonus that the writing is keenly honed--and a surprise that the show feels hardly dated at all.
