Rating: Summary: Paul Yates is a brilliant visionary Review: Alien Sex Party is really quite an enjoyable, clever film even if it may seem at first sophmoric in tone ....it is surprising and edgy in a sense where you never know what the next turn of the story will be, or who will come walking in the door of the video/porn shop... it is a comedy that is rather lighthearted and is reminiscent of RockyHorror, EatingRaul, and Pee Wees Playhouse....there's lots of great music included, and the director's commentary is a treat because this director actually doesn't take himself too seriously, and shows a refreshingly cooperative and collaborative side...Alien Sex Party is really fabulous because you get to see Moby as a dildohead, a whole cast of misfits, various aliens in disguise, a decently energetic if underdressed punk band, and the director's ass! Add an attractive sexually liberated and talkative young blonde woman, and you have got an unexpected and compelling combination.
Also included are two more substantial and serious works by Paul Yates, along with other film shorts and videos and lots of music with something for everybody...this is a film that you will want to own for it's collectablility factor and uniqueness. I am glad I have it in my collection.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant indie film. Review: I caught both screenings of this in Boston. It was so good I had to go back. I still get the song from the movie stuck in my head occasionally. It's a great film and DAMN funny. Great script, great cast, great everything. Just buy the damn thing and watch it.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, but for other reasons. Review: I have seen this film at several screenings. I was at the "crew only" screening at Show World last year and I have a bootleg vhs. I say that I think this film is oddly brilliant because I have started to see something deep in it. I know that this is like saying I saw something deep in "Meatballs". But I started to see the film like Cremaster 3. (most of you reading this won't understand the reference, but you should) The filmmakers took over a space much like the MOMA and recontextualised everything. They subvert the paridigms of everything they present. From the theme to the subject. They even subvert their own references to CLERKS! Then at the end, there is almost an homage to Mr. Barney's film. The filmmakers present their characters from the film in perfect pagentesque form by parading all of the characters once again during the Christmas dinner. I would be suprised of one or two of these filmmakers didn't go to art school. We know that MOBY is friends with BJORK. Was this a little reference to her significant other? I think so. This is a sneaky art film disguised as a comedy.

Rating: Summary: Charming and funny! Review: I saw a screening of this movie in Boston. I can't wait to get the DVD. Almost all the actors are unknown, but they do a fantastic job. Tina, (the girl who works the counter at the sex shop) is a natural. This cold be another underground hit like "Kids".
Rating: Summary: A Party-Full of Fun Review: I saw this movie twice while it was in the theater and loved it both times. The filmmakers take the enclosed area of a sex shop on Christmas Eve and proceed to create a world of characters that extends far beyond your expectations. The style of the film is - self-consciously - like Clerks, but don't be fooled into thinking this is a mere rerun. This movie is unique, and sports a combination of personal histories, mysteries, cameos, as well as musical numbers that will beg you to sing along. This is, hands-down, one of the most unashamedly fun movies I've ever seen.

Rating: Summary: Rockyhorror meets Repo Man meets Duchamp meets Marx Bros Review: Paul Yates's ALIEN SEX PARTY is a comic frenzy, shot out of a canon and bouncing off the walls with sex, music, science fiction, and all combinations thereof. But behind the plastic bedroom toys and rapid-fire pop culture references, there shines the clear intelligence of Yates's vision, that sex is not crime (that, in fact, you can have sex with anything you want, as one musical number informs us) and that the Christmas spirit can be found anywhere, even among "hornball" sex videos, dildos, and butt plugs. The film takes place in an adult video store on Christmas Eve and features such characters as Joe, the befuddled owner, who is terrified of his own merchandise, and Adam, who spouts his indignation on all subjects from the decline of the Star Wars series to accidentally having sex with his cousin. There are also dancing security guards, mad bombers, Star Trek nerds, and the lesser-recognized porn nerds. MOBY/Yates juggle these elements with the skill of brilliant madmen, fearlessly throwing in musical numbers, pornstar cameos, and appearances by dildo-festooned executive producer Moby, to create an almost dreamlike cacophony. The heart and soul of the film, is Joe's niece Tina, a woman so unabashedly promiscuous and uninhibited that if audiences can be honest with themselves, she will be heralded as one of the most strongly feminist characters of recent American film. nigel cocktail-vox pop
