Summary: Not so awful...but jinxed.
Review: I've heard that any movie in which the star dies during filming will be "jinxed"; that is, people will lambaste it. "Wagons East" is a perfect example of this phenomenon. I'm not sure why I decided to watch this film after all I'd heard about it...but, for some reason, I did.

And what did I find? Not a horrible movie...but what *could* have actually been a *good* movie (among other things, it's based on actual events-settlers *did* often decide to return east), made mediocre by the fact that the footage filmed after John Candy's death was so easy to spot. And some of the anachronistic humor (including the very presence of the Richard Lewis character), admittedly, did not help.

But there were quite a few good laughs. The gay guy turning out to be a masterful gunslinger comes to mind. And the scuzzy Ferguson brothers (even the most distinctive of them made unrecognizable by blank expressions and layers of filth) were hilarious.

Review: My wife and I really enjoyed this movie. It is a lighthearted farce of the old west. If you're looking for an entertaining 90 minutes get this movie.

Summary: Bravo, Derek!
Review: Now, I'm aware of the fact that there are a multitude of reviewers who called this movie "contrived" and "tiresome," even "lame" in some instances. True it is that the sad event of the death of John Candy during filming does not justify the film as worth your hard-earned American or Canadian dollars.

However, there is a light in the movie shining through the dust left by the weak jokes and overdone western hijinx: young Vancouver native Derek Senft in the role of Jeremiah Taylor. Senft delivers a performance on par with those of Anna Paquin in The Piano and Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense. Any child who has lived in the west and is forced to move back east could find inspiration in the young boy's perseverance, wonderful attitude, and love for his family, especially those moving in a horse-drawn wagon or its modern counterpart, the station wagon.

In conclusion, I advise you to rent or buy this movie. Put it in your VCR, press play, and then immediately press fast forward. As soon as you see the shining smile and auburn hair of the young actor Senft, however, release the button, and revel in one of the finest acting performances by a Canadian boy from the 20th century.

Summary: Bad! The worst of Candy's last movies i've seen!
Review: The acting of John Candy was not funny at all because in his final days while shooting this film in Durango, Mexico. Candy's health became extremely deteroated to his weight. Problems with the smoking and alcholism that led to his death at age 43. Scenes were a complete disaster by these actors for a script that they want it to call a comedy western spoof based on Mel Brooks classic "Blazing Saddles". Candy plays a wagonmaster trying to lead and travel with some ranch villagers headed straight east. This is not one of my favorite John Candy movies to enjoy!

Summary: supporting actors run the show
Review: The only thing worth watching in this movie is John C. McGinley who plays Julian, the bookstore owner.

Summary: One of John's Best
Review: This is one of John Candy's best movies, even though he passed away while filming. Some reviewers are much too harsh on this very funny movie. Richard Lewis is very well cast and anyone should enjoy this great Western Comedy, similar to Blazing Saddles!
