Summary: Differant is good
Review: A strange world awaits in this movie. It is a fresh and funny. It pushs actors John Cuasack, Cameron Diaz and John Malkovich to act in a more indepth way. I did not even reconize Cameron Diaz and John Cuasack was not his usual fast talking character. A delight to watch.

Summary: I've had nightmares that made more sense than this...
Review: My daughter summed it all up for me when she said - "This movie is wierder than the wierdest dream I've ever had..."

And this - from a kid who has some VERY wierd dreams.

I didn't think the movie was *that* wonderful. I mean - come on - a portal to someone's consciousness?

Perhaps it was a little too surreal for my tastes. It just lacked a certain depth. There was no plausability factor. No universal principles or practical truths.

John C. and John M. were both fairly hilarious and did a good acting job. I'm not sure what Cameron Diaz's part was about, other than being locked in a dog crate and engaging in gratuitous sex scenes.

I like to think when I watch a movie. This flick left me sitting there with more of a stunned expression and a dazed thought. Kind of a "deer in the headlights" look.

Summary: let's just take a deep breath here and try to calm down
Review: This movie is very, very funny, and the first half of it is brilliant, but the second half drags and disappoints, comparatively. Now, drag and disappoint though it may, it remains one of the funniest and most interesting films of recent years, but we must face the sad fact that this film is far from perfect and probably not an actual miracle or gift from God. My theory is that most of the breathless praise you hear comes either from the first half hour or so, driven by sheer momentum into the (again, comparatively) uninspired mess that is the film's third act, or the ravings of the unperceptive and easily baffled. I found the end of the movie to be very frustrating, because it ruined what seemed at first to be the perfect film.

Still, "Being John Malkovich" is WELL worth seeing.

Summary: Ho-Ha!
Review: One of the best films of the past decade is now available in a packed DVD that contains tons more than merely what the description states. I picked it up a week early and was so happy to see a beautiful animorphic image that presents the film exactly as I remember it on the big screen (for once, unlike "Eyes Wide Shut"), great digital sound, plus documentries on the real puppet master who performed for the movie, the 7th 1/2 floor docu and the Malkovich T.V. special in their entierty, the preview and tv spots, plus, and best of all, the hilarious "An Intimate Portrait of the Art of Backround Driving" and a Spike Jonze interview that defies description. A great special edition that doesn't overdo it, the best since the Criterion edition of "Rushmore."

Summary: Well, ok but?
Review: I was told by a lot of people to go see this movie, maybe it was built up too much but I was not impressed. The film as the review above said is "original" but little else. I'm not sure why it is classed as a comedy, dramedy would be a far better description. I was truly expecting this film to be on a level with the other Cusak films, which ,perhaps refreshingly to some, it is not. The film is rather pointless and confusing. When I saw it in the theater about half way through people started getting up and leaving, and to be honest I wish I had too. By the end I was dosing in my seat. This is more or less an art film, and will not hold much to people who are intrested in pure entertainment.

Summary: MUST BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED
Review: Most people know the basic plot of this film: puppeteer finds a portal to John Malkovich's brain. Now for a film to carry off that premise the script had better be good and make some sort of sense in its context. This film does in spades! This is the most original film I have seen in literally YEARS! I saw it on the badgering of a friend. I'm so glad I did! Too many films come out that don't deserve to even be on cable let alone a theatre! If you're in the mood for , in the words of Python, something COMPLETELY different, enter into the mind of John Malkovich! You'll either love it or maybe even hate it-but you won't be able to deny its creativity and courage for the twists in the story. Ignore this week's Julia Roberts assembly line "product" and see this modern cult classic!

Summary: Why the hype?
Review: I have to be honest. This movie was a little okay. I usually love movies that are different. But this was bad. Take perfectly good actors like John Cuasack, Cameron Diaz and John Malkovich, and put them in this publicity stunt of a movie. I really hated the fact that Catherine Keener gave up... I won't give anything away. There are like, 500 sex scenes, and none of them mean anything except that this movie isn't for kids. If your looking for a complete waste of time of a movie, go see Being John Malkovich.

Summary: Beyond description or categorization...
Review: "Being John Malkovich" can only be classified as simply an incredible movie.

I can't imagine anyone feeling lukewarm about this movie, you'll either love it or hate it (and I've yet to meet anyone who falls into the latter category), but even if you are somehow repelled by it, you can't help but appreciate the creative intensity that oozes out of every single frame.

And not only is the story wonderful, every one of the performances is incredible. So subtle that the actors themselves disappear into the fabric of the movie (you'll hear many people say that they didn't even realize that Cameron Diaz or John Cusack was in the movie).

"Being John Malkovich" is definitely not for everyone (and definitely not for the kids), but I can't think that anyone could come away from it without a deep appreciation for the boundless creativity it exhibits or the courage of the writers, actors, and director (not to mention the studio) in giving their hearts and souls to a movie that can't be described in a one sentence blurb, or even a paragraph for that matter!

"Being John Malkovich" shouldn't be missed, and if you have already seen it, it's worth another look.

Summary: Bold and terrific
Review: I generally like Johns Malkovich and Cusack, but I hadn't heard much about this film when I went to see it - just a couple of friends' reports that they were very impressed. I'm glad, because I wouldn't have wanted a single moment spoiled by knowing what was going to happen in advance.

That said, I won't be giving away any plot here. All I need to say is that this is one terrific film and its a fair bet it's unlike any other you've ever seen. While it's humour is intellectual, at times downright black, it manages for the most part to remain lighthearted and playful; an uncommon feat. Still, it isn't the most accessible film around. If you like your comedy lowbrow, this film probably isn't for you. OTOH, if you're looking for something utterly different from the run of the mill experience and have a taste for somewhat darker humour, you won't be disappointed by this one.

Highly recommended.
