Summary: Amazing, but you need a very dry sense of humor.
Review: It is interesting for the first 45 minutes but after that the plot dies. I did enjoy watching it so I gave it a honest 3 stars but I don't want to watch it again. The ending ruined the movie for me. People totally overrated this movie so I bought it. I waisted my money but it was not a total loss. I made note of their names and I will never trust their judgement again because I know they are insipid.

Summary: Bridges & Buffett, Need I say more?
Review: Not your typical Hollywood movie. Very funny, with a drier sence of humor. Jimmy Bufett music from begining to end, not to mention an appearance mid-way through; what a high light! Bridges was great as usual, playing a confident, young cattle thief. Wouldn't he play a great Joe Merchant? I recomend this as a "get together with the guys" show! You'll love it!

Review: Recently, I read a book by an author who, after having moved from New York to Montana, became entranced by the Great Plains. Contributing to this fascination was the film RANCHO DELUXE, which the writer said he saw eight or nine times. My curiosity was piqued, especially since it was filmed in and around Livingston, Montana, a pretty town which I've had occasion to drive through.

Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston, both much younger then (1974), play the small-time cattle rustlers Jack and Cecil respectively. Their poaching enrages a local rancher, John Brown (Clifton James), who bought his spread after moving from the East with the profits from a chain of beauty parlors. Brown declares war against his unknown tormentors, and imports a decrepit ex-horse thief turned range detective, Henry Beige (Slim Pickens), to solve the case.

The best part of this film is the scenery, which is spectacular. Beyond that, I'm left wondering how starved for entertainment one has to be to watch this stinker more than once. Perhaps the video rental outlets in Montana are poorly stocked. It sure beats me. The plot was lame, the acting second-rate, and the 93 minute running time mind-numbingly endless. The Jack and Cecil characters - the heroes (?) of the story - were obnoxious at best and simply unsavory at worst. Of all the major and minor players, only the persona played by Pickens was in any way likable. But, in the end, even he couldn't save this high plains clunker. The video jacket claims RANCHO DELUXE to be a "cool comedy". Pardner, save yourself the cost of the rental and sock it away towards the down payment on a pick-up truck.

Summary: Very Funny Movie
Review: This film is a cult classic and thank God it's out on DVD with understandable dialog. I suffered through many years catching it solely on late night TV which for some reason always had horrible sound. This movie works on many levels and the Jeff Bridges-Sam Waterson pairing makes it a great "buddy" movie. Watch for Slim Pickens's impromptu autopsy of the dead cow - there are several terrifically funny lines that will have you rolling on the floor. A fabulous cast also includes Harry Dean Stanton in one of his classic roles. The film has **great** Jimmy Buffet tunes from his "Montana" period. The film captures the beauty of Livingston Montana and surroundings.

Summary: McGuane's Best Screenplay
Review: This film is pure McGuane with its typical brilliant dialogue, whacky sex, sense of manners in the face of desperation, and cynical modern take on the Code of the West. By far the stand-out performance in Rancho Deluxe is by the brilliant late character actor Slim Pickens as the stock detective hired to track down the rustlers. The scenes he has with his daughter, played by Charlene Dallas are just terrific. Slim pratically stole Blazing Saddles and he completely steals this film because he is the perfect McGuane character, a combination of gristly, amazingly experienced cowboy, and endearing, strange personality that like so many characters literally keeps you guessing right up to the end whether or not he is completely out of his mind. This movie is pure fun, and even has a message about the West and its modernization. It's also a romantic film in more ways than one. Waterston as Bridges' Native American friend has a very good scene with the character's father, who is trying to be proud, but suspects his son is up to no good. I never get tired of this movie. Every second Pickens is on the screen you have a very large smile on your face. This is McGuane's screenwriting at its most heartfelt, and it pretty much could have been a novel if he had so chosen. Cinefiles agree it's a cult classic comedy western, and it is probably the best representation on film of McGuane's ideas, feelings, and dialogue prowess.

Summary: Ranchers and Fishermen
Review: This IS a funny movie! Your wife might disagree, as its 'sophistication' runs into strange directions. If you are a flyfisherman (person), you will love the scenery and will even find a choice tidbit about hoppers!

Summary: Rancho Deluxe
Review: This is a great story about two buds who just want their share or the modern west without working for it so they rustle cattle. It's a great film with wonderful actors, Jeff Bridges, Harry Dean Stanton, Slim Pickens, Elizabeth Ashley and wonderful music by Jimmy Buffett. However, at 93 minutes, a number of things have been cut out and the film suffers for it. I can't justify the thought of anyone making cuts to the movie unless it makes it better. For instance, Star Trek the Motion Picture would benefit if 20 minutes of camera pans were cut out of it. Here the cuts have been made to make the film safe for television, which means, someone else chose what is "safe" for you to watch. I'm sorry, but nobody needs to do that for me, but me. Buy at your own risk.
