Rating: Summary: You know you're in trouble when... Review: ...you're watching a movie with 3 heavyweights (Martin, Hawn and Cleese) and you laugh 3 times. The problem with this remake of the Lemmon-Dennis classic is that we've seen it all before done much better. See "National Lampoon's Vacation", "Dutch", "Fandango" and Martin's own "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". Any one of these "travelling comedy of errors" is considerably more humorous. When the original came out it was something new. It had Jack Lemmon going over the top and really getting the most out of every scene in the film. Lemmon screaming at the top of his lungs-taking down everybody's address, dealing with the cab driver, the dark stranger in Central Park, the fight with the dog over the Cracker Jacks, the chipped tooth, Murray the hotel locator, rain and garbage all over the streets, broken heal and just so much more. Steve Martin's version of George Kellerman is lazy and nearly humorless. It loses sight of the original's comic storyline: New York kicking this simple Ohio couple's butt at every turn and the couple deciding to go back home. It does have Cleese as a closet transvestite (perhaps the films only funny moments). Check out the original or one of the other films mentioned here. This just isn't worth the time.
Rating: Summary: Closed Out of Town Review: 1999s OUT-OF-TOWNERS is not without its merits. It does get occasional laughs from its screenplay adaption. Just not as many as the rapid-fire original penned by Neil Simon and although Steve Martin (One of my favorites) and Goldie Hawn (very reliable) are cute, neither character seems fresh. Martin had done this role already in PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES with better results. And JOHN CLEESE has one of the least forgivable roles in recent memory. there are some inspired scenes: When the couple find themselves in a sexaholic group meeting or when NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani catches them having sexual relations in Central Park or when Andrew Lloyd Webber robs them. This should put them on the lookout for Stephen Sondheim. the film is filled with moments of slapstick that seem rather forced but is overall a reasonable brainless one-time-viewing story.
Rating: Summary: TERRIBLE!!! Acting was bad and it wasn't really funny... Review: A huge disappointment I'm sorry to say. Steve Martin appeared in many great films, such as "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" or "Father of the Bride," however this was the worst comedy I've seen in a while. Why? Well, first of all, the jokes in it have been done a thousand times in thousands of other movies; the acting was bad... and this came as a shock because I know both Martin and Hawn are capable of much better than that... whatever that was. The plot was just as bad as the jokes -- most of the time I already knew what was going to happen before it happen... I found this movie very unentertaining and unfunny.
Rating: Summary: LIGHT AND FUNNY ! Review: A lot of people expressed disappointment over this film, but perhaps they were just expecting it to deliver more than it was intended to deliver! I admit, it will probably never win any awards, and maybe it's not one of the absolute BEST movies Steve Martin and Goldy Hawn have ever been involved in. NEVERTHELESS, it delivers 90 minutes of laughs and entertainment as we watch empty nesters, Harry and Nancy from Ohio, tackle the many aggravations of BIG BAD NEW YORK CITY! Their rental car breaks down, they're mugged, pursued by a vicious Rottweiler, and spied in a "compromising position" by the mayor, himself! Yes, the movie succumbs to extreme silliness at times; but on the plus side, it made me laugh and never got boring! John Cleese is hysterical as a mad-cap cross-dressing hotelier, preforming a high-kicking disco dance to Donna Summer's "Bad Girls." (This scene alone makes the movie worth seeing)!
Rating: Summary: A well made comedy. Review: A movie like this goes a long way to show that experience counts for a lot in acting business. What would normally have been a nothing-out-of-the-ordinary funny movie is elevated to unusual height by the excellent teamplay of the two leads, Martin and Hawn and Cless as the crossdressing hotel manager. Without ever trying to steal each others show they each contribute to what must rate as one of the most hiarious movies ever made. The story itself, elderly but still youthfull couple has finally time for each other and they don't really know what to do now is even preserved throughout the movie and doesn't get lost like it usually does in comedies. And a continues flow of jokes keeps the pace to the very end.
Rating: Summary: Mediocrity in all it's glory! Review: All I can say about this movie is that it's...mediocre. It's not really funny, with a couple chuckles and smiles here and there, and the actors play characters that you can't help but hate. Steve Martin is, okay, but I've seen him in funnier roles. Goldie Hawn's character was showered with so much stupidity and idiocy that she became annoying and at times, unbearable. John Cleese dancing in drag did nothing for me, and it wasn't funny. "The Out of Towners" is not a terrible movie, I just didn't really care enough about it to make a real judgement. My friend liked it and bought it, so I laughed sometimes for his benefit. I thought about how much money he spent on it too, $30 to be exact, and thought that this movie didn't deserve to have that much money shelled out on it. I can't come up with a real opinion of this movie, only that it should win an award for most mediocre film of the year!
Rating: Summary: STICK TO THE ORIGINAL. Review: Anyone who has seen the original 1970 version with Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis, under the aegis of Neil Simon's tight scriptwriting, knows how an excellent cast, script, and director can put together a comedy masterpiece. By the same token, it's easy to see how the opposite of that can create another insipid Hollywood bore-a-thon! Despite two stars in the lead that I simply adore, it falls miserably on its head. There are about 2-3 actual gags that evoke so much as a grin, and out of a full length movie that just isn't enough. While I highly recommend the original, you'd probably be better off skipping this wannabe farce.
Rating: Summary: Funny for being so horrible Review: Bleh! Ha Ha Ha! How pathetic! I watched this film only because I wanted to see how bad it really was, and I was not let down in the least. Goldie and Steve Martin go to New York together to rekindle thier marriage while Martin visits for a job interview . Both of them try real hard to act silly as they get into dumb predicaments, but Goldie really sinks it up with this film .She trys to be too much like Steve Martin , and the result is a complete lack of chemistry between the 2 actors. The dialog and situations are just too rediculous to describe ! Rent this one if you like bad movies.
Rating: Summary: Embarrassing Review: Embarrassing for the cast to be involved in this stink-bomb. It is the worst film involving Steve Martin that I have seen heretofore.
Rating: Summary: if you think i'm scared of that little..dog, well, ha-ha! Review: I also like Goldie Hawn in the first wives club, but this is just about her best performance. Is it just me or when you watch this movie do you not SEE THAT Goldie Hawn has yet hit 35? And she's like 52 in this movie, she looks so good. Steve Martin...well, he's always looked around 54 or 55, even when he was in his mid 40's, he always looks older. They are so funny together, I am serious, they were so funny, this movie always cracks me up from beginning to end!
