Summary: altman with textures
Review: Altman is typically praised for his rambling concept films, like Nashville, but his point is usually to capture a sense of place. Sometimes he's able to do it and get across the characters and have a catchy plot. The Player was the priemier example of that, and this is in that vein. What I remember best is the corrigated barn wall lit by a flourescent light, in the rain. I'm not sure how well it comes across on the little screen, but you'll like this small gem.

Summary: A Funny Sadness
Review: After watching Cookie's Fortune I didn't really know what to think! I liked it....it was funny...but at the same time it was a very sad story...and that left me...well, in a state of confusion! Camille Dixon is definitely the most fetching character. She is utterly irritating, but still very amusing.... Glenn Close is wonderful....what more is there to say!

Summary: Don't Let This One Escape Your Notice
Review: If you're tired of all frosting and no cake, here's one you can sink your teeth into and satisfy your cravings. The writing, the directing, and the acting are wonderful and the characterization of certain Southerners is right on the money. They'll feel like people you've known well for years. The first ten minutes is a little slow while the pieces come together, but it doesn't take long before you're hooked. Wherever you're from, if you liked or related to the kinds of folks portrayed in Brighton Beach Memoirs, A Trip to Bountiful, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Jean Shepherd's Christmas Story, then this one's for you--but an entirely new story!

Summary: I don't think I gained anything from watching this movie
Review: I know a lot of people will think I didn't like this movie because I didn't "get it," but I'm of the opinion that there's not much to get. I like quirky characters, unusual plots, offbeat humor, etc., but none of the above were particularly outstanding in this film. I didn't empathize with any of the characters. In fact, I think I wanted to slap nearly every one of them by the time the film was over. What a waste of my time. Avoid this one, it's a stinker.

Summary: A Must for Altman Fans
Review: Robert Altman has always had a way with ensemble movies, and here is a fine example. A first rate cast comes together in this lovely little comedy that got overlooked at the box office when this movie made its rounds in theaters. Now you can catch it. If you're an Altman fan and have not seen it yet you won't want to miss it. If you have seen it, it is probably time to see it again.

Review: If you idea of humor is an Adam Sandlar movie, then "Cookie's Fortune" probably isn't for you. If, however, you like sly subtle humor, defined by situations and quirky characters then you don't want to miss it. This is a very funny take on southern gothic all presented with a top notch script and excellent performances by Glenn Close, Charles S Dutton, Patricia Neal, and Julianne Moore. One of the very best movies of 1999.

Summary: Are you kidding me?
Review: Robert Altman really ticks me off. He makes so many great movies that are either truly innovative or impressive for what you think he was trying to do, and lately it seems like he's taking on assignments just to pay his rent. This movie is so strictly formulaic, that's the only explanation I can think of as to why he did it.The acting is mostly good, with Patricia Neal and Charles S. Dutton giving their usual fine performances. Most of the others were okay, but the parts played by Chris O'Donnell, Liv Tyler, and Julianne Moore could have been played by just about anybody with probably little difference. What bothered me the most had to have been Glenn Close. Either the experience of playing Norma Desmond on Broadway and Cruella DeVille has gone to her head or there was a reason she was cast in those roles. I'm hoping it's the former and she's not just being typecast, but you have to wonder. Generally a very disappointing movie.

Review: Quite possibly the best film of Robert Altman's amazing career. The writing is wondeful, the acting by Glenn Close, Charles S. Dutton, Patricia Neal, and Jullianne Moore, is superb. Don't miss.

Review: Students of southern grotesque will love this movie. The writing and acting are both superb. All of the plot pieces fit together nicely and are true to the format. Altman will have to go some to beat this effort!

Summary: Wonderful comedy
Review: This is a hysterically funny comedy (a tad on the dark side though) that will easily wind up being one of the best films of 1999. If your idea of comedy is people slipping on a banana peel, or Larry, Curly, and Moe, hitting each other in the head with a hammer, this is not for you. If you like subtle humor, mixed in with great performances you will want to see this immediately!
