Rating: Summary: A great premise and some fine comedic moments Review: Bowfinger has a great premise and the teaming up of legendary comic geniuses Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy provides some very funny moments. Murphy's portrayal of the nerdy lookalike to Hollywood hotshot Kit is hilarious. Martin's script is filled with lots of little details that often prove to be the funniest parts of the film, such as the fleeting character "Bob," who works at Mindhead and wears some startling apparel on his head. The storyline and characters are reminiscent of the Muppet Show, in that a hapless ragtag bunch of lovable characters attempt to mount a production in the face of terrible odds, and there are lots of romantic conflicts behind the camera/stage along the way. It's good family fare.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Cinema Nouveau Review: Several scenes are laugh out loud funny.
Rating: Summary: Funny. Review: Bowfinger delivers some big laughs, and some lighthearted fun! Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin do an amazing job -- as always. The story was fresh one, which gives it huge points right off the bat. Written by Steve Martin and directed by Frank Oz, with a few funny deleted scenes on the DVD, makes it well worth a rent. However, once or twice is enough to watch it. But, of course, one can never tire of hearing, "It wasn't normal rain, it was CHUBBY rain!"
Rating: Summary: Erratic "Bowfinger" Delivers Big Laughs Review: Most Frank Oz comedies ("In & Out", "WhatAbout Bob?" "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels") rely on the setup of an outrageous situation from the script, and the follow-through by the comic performers. "Bowfinger" is no different, really. Independent filmmaker and compulsive liar Bobby Bowfinger(Steve Martin) has promised his desperate-to-be-in-film cast and crew that they would all be in cinema. One day, he receives a script from his desperate-to-be-in-film accountant and part-time receptionist, Afrim (Adam Alexi-Malle), titled "Chubby Rain." Bowfinger, being the con he is, though, has no pull in Hollywood, despite his presentation to his desperate cast and crew, and is forced to try and con the top producer in Hollywood (Robert Downey Jr.) to give him studio backing. The producer sees through his con rather easily, and tells him that he has a "go picture" if he can get Kit Ramsey(Eddie Murphy), the most popular (and most paranoid) action star of the present, to be the leading man. This set up is ingenius, thanks to the script by Martin. However, what ensues is an erratic pace of hilarity and slowness. Instead of an even comedy, hard laughs, and moments of awkwardness alternate as to almost give you some sort of emotional whiplash. Fortunately, there are more big laughs than awkward moments, and the ends for the most part justify the means. Frank Oz does a fair job as director, but it really is the acting that carries the movie-and you don't have to be a big Eddie Murphy fan to appreciate his work. Murphy's role as Kit Ramsey is a typecast Murphy role-loud, short-fused, obnoxious-but he is almost lampooning his earlier roles. His other role as Jiff, Kit Ramsey's gentle, naïve body double, is much better. Perhaps the stark contrast between Jiff and Kit's characters make Jiff's more incredible. Martin's Bobby Bowfinger character is also a common Steve Martin character: he is an affable con man whom you grow to understand and like by the end of the movie (see "Leap of Faith", "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"). This time, though, he's gotten better at being a little more real and less wild and crazy. As far as the supporting cast, Heather Graham is fine as the Iowan starlet Daisy, but Christine Baranski-who plays Carol, an older actress who behaves like a Hollywood legend even though nobody knows who she is-and Alexi-Malle are great in their scenes. Terence Stamp("Star Wars-The Phantom Menace", "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"), as a psychologist at a pyramid-loving, Scientology institute, also gives a strong performance. As stated previously, there are some problems: it starts out weakly, and there are some gags that don't quite work. However, the big laughs are enough to give the movie three stars. Josh Bob says check it out at a matinee.
Rating: Summary: What a Disappointment Review: Every felt really disappointed. I mean here we have Eddie Murphy & Steve Martin together, the subject is Hollywood itself with plenty of material for the satarical. An yet I have the impression this movie never really got out of second gear. It is unforunate in the extreme that we've all seen the performances from Murphy and Martin before. Murphy plays with his usual high energy, a high profile movie actor and his younger goofier brother. But I've Seen it before. Eddie better films were his breaktrough movie because then it was new and original, now we've seen him do his "routine" a thousand times and it no longer has the same effect.(Jim Carrey was moving in that direction but The Truman Show seems to offer hopw) Steve Martin has genuine talent but once again we've seen him play this character before and again we need a change from Martin as well. Again at the moment his greatest moments lie in the past. The Movie - Just Don't expect too much, lightly paced with a few laugh here and there. Murphy reaction to all these strange people approching him in the street and seeing Heather Graham sleep her way to the top in 3 days are the highlights. It's a one watch and then sit in your collection gathering dust movie rather than a movie you'll come back for more.
Rating: Summary: Quite Dissappointing Review: You would think with such mega stars as Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy that this movie would be a laugh a minute. After sitting through this 96 minute video I would wonder if I could count the number of laughs on one hand. Eddie Murphy's two roles in this film are incredibly shallow. The nerdy brother of the film star is quite annoying and the film star just rants and runs. Steve Martin is constantly telling stupid lies throughout the movie which for the most part are unfunny. The movie promotions staff were smart to not waste money selling this movie in the theatre's. It is a fairly dissappointing and avoids my one star rating because1) it is basically lighthearted and 2) just by showing up Murphy and Martin can rouse a chuckle or two. Look elsewhere when renting comdies.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good comedy Review: Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy and Heather Graham lead this hilarious cast. Steve Martin is hilarious as always, and also wrote and produced this heck of a comedy. Martin stars as a down and out filmaker who's found his BIG one. He wants to get superstar Kit Ramsy (Murphy) for the part, but Ramsy doesn't want. But wait! Ramsy has a twin brother...who just happens to be a bit challenged. But Bowfinger can pull it of...that's because he's Bowfinger. I pretty funny, light hearted, little comedy. I liked it alot.
Rating: Summary: Not a great effort by two of the greatest comedians ever Review: If Steve Martin could make one of the funniest movies ever with Michael Caine, of all people (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), you'd think he'd be able to pull of one of the funniest movies ever made once he was teamed up with Eddie Murphy. Unfortunately, this is not the case and this movie truly is a run-of-the-mill hokey comedy. Oh well...now where's my copy of "The Jerk" to go regain my confidence in Steve...?
Rating: Summary: This movie is so funny Review: I love this movie evreybody in thi movie is just wonderfull grate actors and actress's and I say if you want to see a good movie I say see this but this is corny so some stuff will be a bit dull so to speak.
Rating: Summary: Bowfinger:A Review Review: A Movie that could have been much better. It was funny in parts, but these were few. Such a good cast and they wasted themselves on a movie that just did not have a good script to work with. Steve Martin is no "Ed Wood." At least that picture made some sense.
