Review: Frank Oz makes another comedy triumph with BOWFINGER as Steve Martin plays Bobby K. Bowfinger, a director with a hot new script and not many actors to fill in. Eddie Murphy plays a duel role as Kit Ramsey, the hottest star since James Dean, and his nerdy brother Jiff, who when Kit refuses the script, gets the far-away shots instead.Murphy with his exaggerated gestures, and stunning wit proves what a comic genius he is all throughout. Although no credit is given, one must wonder if he contributed to the script in any way. Christine Baranski is also great. MAJOR HIGHLIGHT: Sexy doll Heather Graham as Daisy.....YOU GO BABY!!!!! The scenes in which Murphy is chased and harassed by Martin's crew, unknowing that he is being filmed every step of the way are hilarious, and the acting is splendid. BUY IT!!!!!

Review: Wassup, America?! First of all, Bowfinger is a great movie. I love most movies, and this one is near the top. Steve Martin does real good in this movie and Eddie Murphy is SO FUNNY IN IT!
My advice: rent the movie, love it, order the DVD, cherish it. PEACE OUT!

Summary: He Loves Only Bows...Only Bows..He LOVES BO-O-O-O-OWS
Review: I watched this flick recently while sick in bed. It helped pass an otherwise miserable afternoon, and I was grateful for that. It even gave me a few yucks, which I was even more grateful for. But it was hardly a laugh riot, and those who might have expected as much from a Steve Martin-Eddie Murphy pairing are likely in for a bit of a disappointment. It's engaging, but not howlingly funny. Steve Martin does his smarmy bit, but adds a sweet dimension to the mix. Eddie Murphy, in a dual role, gets to do what he does best too (which is, well, multiple roles). The supporting staff, which includes Christine Baranski, Heather Graham and Robert Downey Jr. are all just fine too. But the film never really takes off. The "high concept" here is, as you likely read above, that a Hollywood third-stringer, desperate for a shot at success, tricks an A-list action star into making unwitting appearances in his cut-rate sci-fi flick, CHUBBY RAIN. Of course, complications and downright absurdities abound. BOWFINGER is not an edgy, mean-spirited indictment of Hollywood pretension and hypocrisy. It's a sweet natured flick that makes gentle fun of the entertainment industry in particular and all of us in general. Over all, not such a bad way to while away a sick day.

Summary: Absolutely hilarious!
Review: This is a wonderful, hilarious movie. I think perhaps I appreciate it especially because I am from L.A., and have a few friends who are, in their own way, a little bit as desperate and as shameless as the Steve Martin character is in this movie. It just seemed a little *too* true to me at times! The inventiveness and resourcefulness of Martin and his cohorts is a wonder, as they try to secretly film a movie without the main star knowing about it. Eddie Murphy is *fantastic* in his dual role as superstar Kit and his bespectacled, nerdy brother. The scene where Murphy is urged to cross a very busy freeway (it looks like the 5 freeway to me for some reason) was hysterical! Murphy is unsurpassed. A very funny movie. Highly recommended.

Review: This movie is HILARIOUS! Steve Martin stars as Bowfinger, a director who needs a hit movie even though he has no resources to actually hire anyone. So he comes up with the idea of following around a famous actor (Eddie Murphy) and film him on the sly, then splice the film in so it looks like he has a legitimate star. The rest of the film involves a fresh-from-Ohio woman looking to make it in LA anyway she can (Heather Graham), an older comedic actress (Christine Baranski) and a bumbling lookalike they found when they held auditions in their living room (also Eddie Murphy.) The situations they concoct are crazy and clever --- scaring Murphy in a dark parking garage so they can later put it in a scary scene, getting a cop to not only NOT arrest them but make a cameo. If you want to laugh harder than you have in years, rent this movie!

Summary: Steve Martin Is Fun!
Review: Bowfinger is one of those off beat movies that has some really special and funny movements but overall is not a standout. Frank Oz, a really intriguing director often has surprises in his feature. And this one is no exception. Eddie Murphy is very funny in his two roles and well as the always-inventive Steve Martin. This is really his film that he conceived and wrote. The film takes a nice slap at Hollywood and moviemakers of all kinds. Technically it is a funny and sharp film. The characters are purposefully broad and energetic. Some are over the top. I liked it. Its fun and I really enjoy watching Steve Martin. The DVD Extras are fun too! You'll have fun.

Summary: Steve Martin: Class Act
Review: BOWFINGER could possibly be a career milestone for Steve Martin. After years of tackling serious and semi-comic roles (LEAP OF FAITH) BOWFINGER sees Martin returning to his roots in a delightful farce about the film industry. The film also shows why Steve Martin is a class act in a business with few scruples. Martin could have ventured into Martin Lawrence territory by turning the film into a his own vehicle. After nearly three decades of hilarity, if there's anybody who deserves a self-tribute, it would be Steve Martin. But rather than have the script revolve around himself, Martin shares the screen with his co-star. In BOWFINGER, Martin's role is understated and his incompetent but determined Ed Wood-like would-be Hollywood director captures the sympathy of the viewer.It is Eddie Murphy however, once again playing multiple characters, who is allowed to steal the show. Proving that he's back to form after the mundane LIFE and the juvenile NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE KLUMPS, Murphy is characteristically edgy and over the top and gets the choicest lines. Playing a paranoid film star and his nerdy twin brother, Murphy steals almost every scene he's in. And Martin and Murphy are perhaps the funniest comic collaboration since Belushi and Ackroyd in THE BLUES BROTHERS. Here's hoping that they work together more in the future! The supporting cast is also allowed to shine. Heather Graham is hilarious as the stereotypical Hollywood starlet who feels obligated to sleep her way to the top. The beautiful Christine Baranski plays the competent but aging Carol, desperate for that one role but also determined to meet the "star" of Bowfingers new film. The film manages to be understated but never flat. In conclusion, BOWFINGER is a classic comedy. Heartily recommended viewing for the Summer of SCOOBY POOP.

Summary: An Ode to Wanna-Bes Everywhere
Review: Have you ever felt like you were almost qualified enough to be doing what you are attempting to do (whether it's fixing your computer, managing your finances, or cooking a gourmet meal) -- but actually, you were in just a little bit over your head? BOWFINGER takes such a scenario -- in which wannabe filmmaker Bobby Bowfinger figures out a way to actually make a movie with a big-name star in spite of not having the star's permission, the film equipment, or much in the way of start-up capital to pay cast and crew. I found it very amusing to watch Steve Martin make the most out of the limited resources he was working with -- including an office that looked like a fixer-upper on its way to demolition, and his trusty old dog. I watched this film immediately following THE MUSIC MAN, and was amazed that not only was The Music Man mentioned in BOWFINGER, but there are strong similarities between these two movies! The most striking one is that the main character in BOWFINGER, played by Steve Martin, is doing his best to earn his living by doing something he feels uneasy and a bit dishonest about . Another similarity is the focus on "the big break" which comes in the form of the Wells Fargo wagon delivering wonderful packages in The Music Man, and in the guise of the Fed Ex truck bringing good news for movie deals in Bowfinger. The third big similarity is that both movies end with the main character realizing that what he has been doing actually does work -- and he's not the fraud that he suspected he might be. I find this to be a very heartening message for all of us who have ever wondered if we had what it took to be a success. BOWFINGER is witty, thought-provoking, and ultimately uplifting -- and the cast is superb! I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys thoughtful comedy with a good heart.

Summary: Underrated (that's a good thing)
Review: I can't really add much to the positive reviews that has not already been said. The best thing about Bowfinger among the other superlatives is that the movie is simply another demonstration of how comedically gifted are Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. The fact that the critics panned this movie doesn't surprise me. These are the same people that a few years later loved Moulin Rouge which in my humble opinion is the cinematic equivalent of a lobotomy, but that's another subject. If you're a fan of Eddie Murphy and/or Steve Martin and you haven't seen Bowfinger, definitely check this one out.
