Rating: Summary: A real superhero spoof Review: A nice little 'cult' film. It is a more deadpan and less goofy version of "Mystery Men", which was funny, but never really lived up to its potential. This film is funny, with some nice, but inconsistant writing. The story is about very unheroic superheroes, and the realtivly banal lives they lead. If you expect them to go fight villans, you will be disappointed. In fact until the end, you never see them use thier powers. It is a very funny film, and a nice example of an odd and engaging film.
Rating: Summary: SO much better than Mystery Men Review: Don't get me wrong Mystery Men was good... But this movie (the Specials) Is GREAT! I was laughing the whole way through and just enjoying the fun original script and simply Superb cast! Whoever cast this film knew what they were doing because they had some of the funniest and coolest actors around. I can't recommend this dvd enough. It's funny, cool and enjoyable... And if that wasn't enough the dvd has heaps of special features including some great deleted scenes... check it out it really is hillarious!!!
Rating: Summary: Best Thomas Haden Church Movie --- EVER! Review: For anybody just becoming a fan of Thomas Haden Church, I'd advise you to see this movie. This is Thomas at his best (also, it was before his brunette period! - if you don't believe me, see that new episode of "Lucky" called 'The Method' that he was in. He's USUALLY a blonde). I like almost every character in this movie and there is never a dull moment! You'll find yourself quoting the scene where they discuss the action figure celebration in the boardroom, which turns into an arguement about Amok's actions. The Great Strobe needs his own comic book. Badly. Just as long as Archie Comics and Ken Penders aren't involved. I have another suggestion to new Thomas Haden Church fans, avoid "Susan's Plan... Dying to Get Rich" and "3000 Miles to Graceland". Both movies are bad and... I hate that hairdresser chick in SP:DTGR. She's just scary.
Rating: Summary: Fun, Freaky Super Hero Stuff Review: I found this movie by accident at a local rental shop and after I watched it I decided I had to own it.If there are any comic book fans from the late-eighties out there that remember Kieth Giffen's Justice League, this is the movie to see! Fans of superherodom, buy this movie! You won't regret it. The story isn't about how a group of superheroes saves the world from the latest crisis to come along or one of their drawn-out, cliched origin stories. It's a bunch of goofy characters with super powers bickering about the stuff that goes on when they're not out saving the world and shows more humor and indepth character portrayal than any superhero movie (parody or other) in the last .....well, ever. Included in the cast of T.V./B-Movie greats are writer/co-star James Gunn(a favorite of mine whose book The Toy Collector is also available here on Amazon),Thomas Haden Church(probably best known by his role as Lowell on Wings), Rob Lowe(no intro necessary),Judy Greer(whom I became a die-hard fan of after having seen her portray the sarcastic,goth-esque Deadly Girl) and Jordan Ladd(who was fantastic as the rookie superheroine). Obey my Hypnotic Fan-Boy ranting......Buy The Specials!
Rating: Summary: Not the Best Superhero Movie, But BetterThan Most Review: I had the great pleasure of seeing THE SPECIALS at a sneak preview with the cast and crew during the 2000 San Diego ComiCon. The preview audience of diehard comic book fans loved the movie. Since the preview, I have relentlessly hounded my friends and told them to see the movie if ever they got the chance. Now, at long last, THE SPECIALS is available on DVD. If you are a fan of comic books, superheroes and superhero films, order the DVD today. You will be glad you did. The plot is different from most superhero films and it is this difference that makes the film shine. Whereas most films deal with the hero or heroes facing a great evil menace, this film deals with the politics and personality conflicts of being part of the superhero community. Like MYSTERY MEN, the heroes are dysfunctional, but well-meaning. But in the end, MYSTERY MEN was still a heroes vs. villains movie. THE SPECIALS is not. It is a movie of heroes vs. their own natures. It manages somehow to be funny and poignant throughout the film. It is an excellent balance of thought provoking insight on superheroes and human nature and still manages to be incredibly funny. I have waited almost a year for this DVD. It was well worth the wait.
Rating: Summary: What a piece of Crap Review: I picked up the specials looking to see some heroics or comedy or drama. What I got was a load of trash. This film is an uninspired attempt to make a "superhero genre" movie by people who have never seen, read, or heard of a comic book or a cartoon. The characters are abysmal, the dialoge stinks, and it seems the entire "special effects" budget was reserved for the last 2 minutes of the film.I kept waiting for something or anykind of plot to develop. This movie started poorly and got progressivly worse. Save your money and buy a copy of Mystery Men. This film made my all time 5 worst list of films, second only to "YOR hunter from the future"
Rating: Summary: Unusual superhero movie Review: I really enjoyed this movie. It is funny and insightful; an unusual take on comic book heroes. This is a character movie with no flashy action sequences - it develops slowly and reveals the characters to us over the course of the film.
Rating: Summary: The Specials don't travel well Review: I remember being told that there were two kinds of funny: funny ha-ha, and funny peculiar. This film is the second kind. I've admired Rob Lowe as a comic talent since Illegally Yours, and there are signs here that he might have done better with a better script, better direction with more pace, and less self-conscious rattling away at the 'ha-ha' kind of funny; but he's not helped by a lack-lustre cast and jokes that just don't cross the Atlantic successfully. Perhaps it's the parochialism of the humour that makes this film feel so slow, but I'm afraid I was very disappointed, and will have to wait longer to see one of my favourite actors achieve the success he deserves in comedy.
Rating: Summary: The Special's is a direct to video gem!!!! Review: I'm a big fan of comic books and being a fan usually means that I watch every super hero movie to come out of the woodworks. They usually range from great (Batman, Rocketeer, & X-men) to not so great (Batman & Robin, Captain America, & Spawn). I picked up the Specials without hearing anything about it and only seeing one preview. What a pleasant surprise this movie is, and funny as hell too. The Specials is about the 6th or 7th biggest super hero team and how they deal with only fighting bad guys about 10 times a year. The film deals with each member of the team and all their bickering that encompasses being one of the specials. As the film progresses the team is targeted by a toy company that wants to create action figures of them. The movie is very low budget so there is no huge super hero battles but this movie is not about that. The Specials although not as good as Mystery men could easily stand as a good companion piece to this equally great movie . Thomas Haden Church, Rob Lowe, & Jamie Kennedy throw in great performances as these twisted heros. I can only imagine that this movie was buried because of the dismal box office grosses of Mystery Men. If your a fan of the Tick or you always wondered what super heros do when their not fighting crime pick this movie up and watch it but make sure you keep the restraints of the budget in mind and you'll be pleasantly surprised like I was.
