Rating: Summary: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Review: THE GOOD: (1) The opening sequence spoofing seemingly impossible stunts by having an extremely impossible stunt. (2) The movie within a movie sequences near the start and finish of the film, with cameos of famous people. (3) The casting of Michael Caine as Austin's father, master spy Nigel Powers. I especially liked the scene with the subtitles while they're talking English English! (4) The sight gags and double entendres, which are as funny as ever. (5) The DVD extras, especially the deleted scenes and out-takes.THE BAD: (1) There was no explanation of how Dr. Evil and Mini-Me returned from space. When asked about it, Dr. Evil's brief reply was "Space was cool, wasn't it Mini-Me?" (2) Beyonce Knowles, as Foxxy Cleopatra, and her lack of chemistry with Austin Powers. She is not under the spell of Austin's mojo and you get the impression that they're never going to shag, baby. (3) Goldmember is more bizarre than threatening as the main villain. In addition, since he is the main villain and the movie is named after him, why isn't Goldmember pictured on the cover with the other characters from the movie? (4) Dr. Evil bonding with his biological son Scott and rejecting Mini-Me, followed by Mini-Me defecting to the other side. It just didn't ring true to their characters. (5) The revelation by Nigel Powers that Dr. Evil is, in reality, Austin's brother. Talk about sibling rivalry! THE UGLY: (1) The mole on Fred Savage's face. (2) The silhouette of Fat Bastard on the toilet. (3) Goldmember's constant peeling of his skin. He saves the pieces and even eats a piece! (4) The slimmed down version of Fat Bastard at the end of the movie, with his skin hanging down in folds. (5) Austin Powers' teeth. You think he would have gone to a dentist by now!
Rating: Summary: Infinifilm Feature Frustrating Review: While the wealth of extras in Goldmember are quite interesting, they're marred by the limitations that the Infinifilm process imposes on your DVD player. According to others, as well as my own experience, Infinifilm disables your players ability to scan and pause. This means that if you want to step away for a moment, you'll have to either let the movie run or stop it all together. On the slight up-side, pressing PLAY will return you to the beginning of the chapter you were watching. And since scanning is disabled, you'll have to watch everything up the point you stopped the DVD. YUCK! I'm against any kind of control disabling. Disney does a similar thing by disabling the menu and scan controls during the "Coming Attractions" segment before the movie. This is just plain wrong. We, the viewers should have the right to decide how we want to view our DVD's.
Rating: Summary: Humorous, Hilarious, Hideous and Hopeful! Review: I was so excited to see Beyonce as Foxxy Cleopatra. The movie is extremely amusing! The opening scene was extremely funny! The dialogue, the casting and the usual Austin Power pranks are really enjoyable. The movie is chiefly a trip back in time- a modern day type past? Myers is back but this time he's actually funnier. Maybe Knowles helped his performance? Probably! Knowles is the latest in the series, we've loved Liz Hurley, loved Graham, now it's time for Beyonce. The enjoyable part was the usual the dirty jokes, the pranks, and the overacted cast! But you'd probably only enjoy this if you enjoyed the others in the series. If you thought the others were fake and unrealistic, you'd probably hate this! The feature is hilarious! After quite a lot of years Myers finally once again meets Dr. Evil. Teaming up with the unexplained Goldmember, Dr. Evil comes up with a time-traveling plan to take over the world, one that includes the capturing of Nigel Powers, Austin's beloved dad. In 1975, Myers meets his lovely Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce) who plays a sexy detective. It's up to Foxxy and Austin to save the day and to stop Dr. Evil from his evil plans. The movie is great! Written by Myers himself, the movie is yet another imaginative weird James Bond movie. The soundtrack includes Beyonce's solo performance in "work it out" as well as two songs written by Myers! Myers was eager to make the third film in the series interesting and just as funny, and he has accomplished something! Way to go Myers and Knowles!
Rating: Summary: Funny, but a bit repetitive Review: I have to admit that all of the Austin Powers' movies are little guilty pleasures, and Goldmember is no exception. Yes, it is filled with the typical [strange humor] comedy that made the two previous movies so popular, yet its story is unique on its own. Mike Myers is wonderfully diverse, reprising his roles as Austin, Dr. Evil, and Fat Bastard, while introducing the new character Goldmember (a raving 70's Dutchman who eats his own dried skin...pretty wacky). Beyonce Knowles plays a great, rather platonic sidekick, and Michael Caine is surprisingly convincing as Austin's "fahza". Many may find the family plotline in this movie rather sappy and even predictable, and the ending may leave faithful Austin devotees thinking "ok, now what?" However, Austin is still as endearing as ever, and this movie is an adequate recovery from the rather slow "Spy Who Shagged Me". Heck, the cameos in the intro to Goldmember alone make it a vast improvement. The infinifilm DVD format is good. All of the trailers, including my personal favorite featuring Verne Troyer as the mini-Austin Powers, are featured, as well as deleted scenes, music videos, and "the making of" featurettes. This DVD actually has three versions of the movie in its entirety. The first is just the movie alone; I recommend watching this first. The second is the movie with infinifilm features inserted (e.g., a deleted scene or a "how they made this scene" option is listed at the bottom of the screen at the point in the movie it pertained to); these are interesting, although some are so short, I almost wonder why they even bothered. The third is the movie with Jay Roach (director) and Mike Myers providing commentary of the scenes throughout. This is funny, although somewhat repetitive of the extra features on the DVD and rather self-gratifying (i.e., Mike Myers and Jay Roach tell you what a joy it was to work with everyone on the cast and how great it is that they made this movie). All in all, this is a truly funny movie, and the infinifilm features definitely try and give you the inside scoop on the movie. Although repetitive, if you really liked Goldmember, you won't mind watching it more than once.
Rating: Summary: "I haven't laughed that hard since I was a little girl." Review: God, this has to be one of the all-time funniest movies of all time. Mike Myers is a comedic genius and I was laughing through the whole thing. I especially loved the part when Britney Spears's head exploded. *Evil grin* Yesss...
Rating: Summary: Recycled Gold On DVD Review: There's no doubt that comedian Mike Myers is a genius. However, as the latest Austin Powers film painfullydemonstrates, the once fertle idea, may be running out of ideas. I am a fan of the first film and liked the second movie very much. I went to see GOLDMEMBER, not knowing what expect from the flick, except to have a good time. Instead, I was pretty disappointed with it, and felt that all of the best parts of this installment were seen in the trailer. The rest of the humor is just recycled from the other films in the series. The plot involves Austin (Meyers) squaring off against Dr. Evil (Myers), who has allied himself with Goldmember, (Myers) another of the spy's sworn enemies. All of the usual suspects are along for the ride. Scott Evil (Seth Green), Number 2 (Robert Wagner), Frau Farbissina (Mindy Sterling) Mini-me (Verne Troyer). All of these characters welcome Michael Caine (Austin's Dad) and Beyoncé Knowles as Foxxy, Austin's love interest to the film series. The new cast members are fine but don't really add anything original here. The plot doesn't have to be all that unique since this is a spoof, but I wish the jokes were a little funnier Sure, there are cameos aplenty in the film, but once you realize who does what here, the follow-up joke isn't all that great or unexpected. Couldn't they find anyone better than Katie Couric to play her scene? Directed, once again by Jay Roach, GOLDMEMBER has only a few funny bits. He and Myers seem to have grown tired of the series, The best part of this film is the "prison" scene. That's the only true laugh out loud sequence in the movie. GOLDMEMBER is a tired comedy whose jokes have come and gone. Even though I didn't like the movie when I saw it in the theater, I decided to give the DVD a shot anyway as a rental. The DVDs of the other 2 films were well put together, and I wanted to see if GOLDMEMBER's extras would be any good. I also wanted to see if I would feel any differently about the sequel the as part of the whole package I still don't care for the film. As for the extras, once again, New Line has given us a packed Infinifilm disc. The commentary track provided by Myers and Roach is good but, it too, felt kind of been there before. If you watch the film with the infinifilm mode on, you can access 12 behind the scences featurettes, as the film plays out, prompted by pop up icons. If you prefer, they can also be seen separately as well. They are really kind of standard though, Myers does have a few funny moments on the set that are worth a chuckle just the same. Theatrical trailers, 4 music videos from the sountrack are also included on the disc, as is an additional visual FX featurette and an interactive DVD-ROM recording studio where viewers can add their voice to certain scenes. As usual though, the funniest stuff on the DVD, came in the form of a 24 minute outtake reel. I just wish the film itself made me laugh like the outtakes did. As a rental, it passes but only if you never saw the other films in the series I think it may be time to put Austin Powers back in the deep freeze
Rating: Summary: Groovy Movie,B@by! Review: This Rocks! Mike Myers really is a comic genious! I remember when my brother, his friends, and I watched this movie in the theathers! This movie is about this guy named Austin Powers. His dad Nigel Powers was kidnapped by Dr.Evil,MiniMe,and Goldmember. He and this girl named Foxy Cleopatra joins him on a trip to Tokyo Japan. This movie has exellent bathroom humor! What i thought was disgusting is 2 things: 1. Godmember eats skin! 2. I think Austin's mom is a prostitute. GET THIS VIDEO! I DO RECCOMEND IT FOR YOU!
Rating: Summary: almsot a classic, they should have lost beyonce Review: The title says it all, mayBe if she wasn't in it it would have been a classic. Her acting skills are horrible, why would they bring her on for this role. Without her in the way the film still stands as a very funny and imaginitive comedy. All the characters from the past show up in this all out comedic warfare. Including one of my favorite actors seth green returns for his brilliant preformance. Jay rouch did an excellant job directing this film, and mike myers and michael mccullers wrote a very funny script. The only thing that seems strange is that with only two executive producers there are eight producers, two of which are writer/actor mike myers and demi moore. but with that aside take beyonce out and you have a comedy classic.
Rating: Summary: An average comedy. Review: I love the Austin Powers series, but I feel like this effort was my least favorite of the three thus far. If you were to watch the first movie, then the second, and then finally "goldmember," you will undoubtably see how the characters become so overblown by the third film, drastically different then how they were in the first film. Take for instance Dr. Evil, who in the first movie was almost serious, and anything comedic was often very subtle, not trying for the laughs, but getting them in a unique fashion. In "goldmember," however, evil is completely out of character and it gets almost ridiculous at times. Although these characters are all funny, they've all gone through their own "personal evolution." "goldmember" is filled with many memorable moments which is why I still have respect for the series. The opening of the movie is probably one of the greatest openings for a comedy I have ever seen. I'm sure many can agree to that. The whole part with Mr. Roboto is witty and smart, poking fun at our use of subtitles. The movie also has another great scene behind a curtain, which mirrors another scene in the second movie, where it looks like heather graham is pulling grenades, rats, umbrellas, and other objects out from Austin's behind. However, the scene in "goldmember" involves Austin and Mini Me in a hospital room during a rountine physical. I also have respect for Mike Myers himself, who plays the parts of 4 characters in Austin, Dr. evil, fat bastard, and goldmember. So all in all, an allright comedy. It has its moments, but it also has those moments that just go too far and are completely off base with what the first movie in the series was trying to illustrate. I've heard that a fourth picture is most likely in the works, which I hope they can turn around the series with a final movie that Austin Powers fans truly deserve.
