Summary: A cracking US comedy!!
Review: I'm going through a phase of watching the latest comedy releases from the US. This is one that's 'way out' as Tripp would say. What a great concept: four Cleveland lads decide it's worth dropping out of school to see their idol rock band, KISS, who are performing in Detroit. From this, we can expect a merry jaunt as they motor their chaotic way to the all-time concert. But their lives are also making big changes along the way. Edward Furlong excels himself as 'Hawk', perhaps my favourite rebel of the four. Fave parts of the film? Has to be their encounter with the disco-heads on the highway, the ladies toilets, Hawk's 'performance' in the club, and right at the beginning (I won't elaborate and spoil the film for those who haven't seen it). But I promise you it's full of loud laughs, comical situations, dastardly plans, daring stunts, witty characters, and a great plotline. It was crazy fun! Another great US comedy I'm glad to have seen!!

Summary: Mindlessly enjoyable, but I was disappointed
Review: Not a bad movie, it certainly had some good lines and funny scenes. But it could have been a lot funnier. The characters were all extreme caricatures, played for the easy laughs. Nothing intriguing or multi-dimensional about them. Great music, great actors, great idea...but the execution is by-the-book, cliched, and predictable. Watch it for mindless entertainment, but don't get your hopes up in the 5-star range.

Summary: yes...KISS fans are this fanatical
Review: KISS fans will all agree that they would go through just about anything to see their masked heroes. For someone like me, the challenge was wishing KISS would get back in make-up and go back on the road. So, I know the elation I felt when I finally saw KISS in person-in full make-up.

Even if you are not a KISS fan, I think you would agree that this movies has it's share of laughs. The 70's were sure an interesting time.

Summary: Great movie
Review: I first discovered this movie while blazin' at a friend's place. I was amazed. We forget how interesting American history is, and this movie does an amazing job depicting one of its most interesting eras. Contrasting the different elements of this cultural phenomenon called the 70's, and set to an ecclectic, fitting and fun soundtrack, you truly get a feel of this era, while watching 4 entertaining characters defend their individuality and cultural character, with dialogue filled with whit and humor. Incredible camera work and editing serves not only to improve a seemingly already perfect flow, but adds an aesthetic aspect to a movie already filled with loads of intelligence. A great movie for teenagers and college kids and adults alike, I recommend "Detrot Rock City" fo anyone who enjoys movies.

Summary: Rock and roll this movie over and over!
Review: I have to admit that I'm a bit biased, because KISS is my all-time favorite supergoup heroes! And this is the movie that could have been made back at their height in popularity back in the 70s. In fact, the movie is so well done, it feels just like it was made in the 70s...which is the effect the producers were shooting for, I believe! Even though I'm a bit biased FOR KISS, I must say that this movie should even appeal (and did appeal to a friend of mine) to those who aren't KISS fans. In fact we really don't even see KISS until the end-concert song. It's a movie that can be treasured by anyone who wants to see a good, basic story about the trials, the tribulations, the fun times, the innocence about striving for your dreams regardless of what other people think. The movie is hilarious...and KISS takes no-holds-barred punches to themselves in all good humour. I now own the video of this, and hopefully will have a DVD player soon to get the full-version, with directors cuts and all. This is a fun movie you can share with all your friends for a good, light-hearted entertaining time. And I don't think a one of them will regret that they were entertained by a movie made with a big KISS. :-)

Summary: Best Movie I ever Saw In My Life
Review: I think that DRC is absoulety the best movie I have ever seen in my life. James DeBello is especally funny because he is one of those stupid characters that nobody understands. It's a little hard to believe that thats Natasha Lyonne as Christine looks the same because she looks diffrent in other movies like SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS. I Think the kids are just good to get along with. So, buy this movie. Because, I think it is the best movie I ever saw! also, KISS does a concert that is so cool that you'll say "wow" when the concert's over. Believe me, I've had experince.

Summary: Worth A Look As It Is Pretty Funny - 3.5 Stars
Review: I really thought I would hate this flick. From a non-kiss fan's perspective though, I have to say I did laugh throughout. I was exactly the age of these guys in 1978 and hated KISS then and hate 'em more now. Really the film has little to do with KISS. It could have been any band. Fortunately the movie focuses on four guys' journey to the show and not the show itself (only the last five minutes of the movie). Sure it is crass, lude, and obscene but so was 1978! Even if you hate KISS like me it is still worth a watch.

Summary: O.D. On Nostalgia
Review: Even though I'm a KISS fan, I didn't rush to see this film because I am so tired of the 70's nostalgia trend. I finally gave in and rented it last month. Big surprise - I enjoyed it so much, I bought my own copy the next day and have now seen it about 20 times. The nostalgia collage at the beginning just rocks! This is a decent film for anyone who doesn't take life too seriously, but it is a MUST SEE for anyone who really was a KISS fan (or anyone too young to have been there but wants to know what it was like). Granted, this movie probably never intended to wow the critics, but it is a "masterpiece" in it's own way. What it lacks in "art", it makes up in sentiment. Of all the nostalgia films, this one explored the KISS phenomenon so accurately, I feel it's earned it's place as a rock/comedy classic.

The beginning of the film had me worried, as it threatened to turn into a two hour Quiet Riot video (you know the kind: moms and authority figures totally exaggerated), but once the KISS references started rolling, I found it hilarious and so on the money. I grew up in the 70's so I adored KISS while they were at their masked peak. I do remember the vehement opposition to KISS back then, cartoonized by the mother in this movie, and yes, if you weren't there, some adults really did tell their kids KISS stood for Knights (or Kids) In Satan's Service.

The four male leads in DRC must have had so much fun making this movie because their comraderie was totally infectious and believable. Even if they weren't fantastic actors, I'd watch this movie repeatedly because they are so charming. From now on, it will be hard for me not to think of adorable Giuseppe Andrews when I hear "Fox On The Run" and I'll never get tired of watching Edward Furlong (poor baby) stripping down to his KISS boxers. Natasha Lyonne was stellar (not stella!) as the disco chick singing "Makin' It" while Melanie Lynskey, as Beth, was so refreshing, I completely forgot how much she scared me in HEAVENLY CREATURES.

As a fan, I am admittedly biased, so I don't know how much fun this film would be for someone who doesn't fully understand KISS mania. The in-jokes are brilliant and plentiful. Some of the best were the babes named Beth and Christine, the kid in makeup playing the KISS pinball machine and of course, the appearance of Shannon Tweed (SO PERFECT as the foxy "older" woman).

I don't know if this is true, but I have heard that a certain KISS member had to explain to his teenage daughter how huge KISS was back in the day. She had no idea. For people like her, this movie really clues you in to what it was like in the KISS heyday. I am grateful to the makers of this film for taking me back to age eleven, when KISS was my first concert (1979 Dynasty tour!). I spent my summers hanging out at the Magik Market collecting plastic KISS cups and all my money on any magazine promising a pic of the guys sans makeup (does anyone else remember what a HUGE deal that was? ). My fiance and I can't wait to show Detroit Rock City to our children (when we have some) so we can tell them "this is what it was like to have been raised on KISS."

If you really want to O.D. on the combo of rock and 70's nostalgia, I suggest you watch this film back to back with real films from back in the day (none of the "That 70's Show meets the big screen" vids of late). Check out OVER THE EDGE (featuring the young Matt Dillon and an amazing soundtrack: Cheap Trick, Van Halen, etc.), HEAVY METAL, CARRIE, MASK, THE WALL, THIS IS SPINAL TAP and DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION PART II: THE METAL YEARS.
