Summary: It Ok to see Gwyneth in a Fat suit.... Silly movie
Review: This movie is ok movie it like a PG-13 like Something about Mary movie. Seeing Gwyneth in a fat suit is strange but she did a great job just being a Overweight "Rosemary". You get to see her in her fat suit towards the endding of the movie. There one thing about this movie, well I don't want to spoil the movie. I tell you the hint it has to do with Jason Alexander as Mauricio

Summary: Veiled attempt to make fat jokes
Review: I'm beginning to think the mark of a bad movie can be determined by the number of teenagers standing in line to be let into the theatre to see it. My boyfriend and I had to stand in a line that extended about 100 feet to the other side of the theatre while the cleaning crew was getting ready. All around us were 15-19 year olds gossiping away as if they weren't aware their easy-breezy-beautiful life would end within the next few years. I'm getting off track though. Shallow Hal (played by Jack Black) is a comedy by the Farrelly Brothers about a man who was asked by his dying father to make sure he always went for the "hotties." Otherwise a nice, normal guy, Hal refuses to even look at women who are any less than perfect. If you've ever seen Jack Black you'd know that perfect women were way out of his league. Well they would be if he didn't have a ton of money and a band (if you can call it that). So along comes this motivational speaker man who hypnotizes him into seeing the inner beauty of everyone. Suddenly he's after very "unattractive" women and his best friend, played by Jason Alexander, thinks he's gone nuts. Enter Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays (darn, I can't even remember her name . . that's how much of an impression she made on me. Oh wait, I think I remember now) Rosemary. Hal follows her into a woman's clothing store while she's looking at panties. Of course, Hal sees her as perfection, but Rosemary is actually about 350lbs and the undies she's holding up to look at reflected that. Hal makes some off-the-wall jokes about the panties, thinking they MUST be for someone else and naturally, Rosemary gets indignant. Hal apologizes and buys her lunch and there begins the start of a beautiful relationship. Sort of. The movie goes on trying to pull itself off as a moral lesson that inner beauty is actually what matters, however the film was just a veiled attempt to make a lot of "jokes" about fat and otherwise unattractive women. If you want to make fun of fat and ugly people, go right ahead. Make a movie about that. But please don't package it up to be something it isn't. All in all, it was a disappointment from the Farrelly brothers. I was also disappointed that Molly Shannon only made a cameo at the beginning of the film as Hal's mom. Unless you're just as Shallow as Hal, I would highly recommend avoiding this movie and going out to see something good instead. Or maybe just stay home and rent a GOOD Farrelly brothers movie.

Summary: A nice message in a bad film
Review: Shallow Hal is definitely the weakest of the Farrelly Brothers' efforts to date. It has a nice message (Don't judge people by their appearance), but for a comedy, it's decidedly UN-funny. Hal is played by Jack Black, an actor that I find thoroughly loathsome and obnoxious. This film doesn't help my image of him any....Hal has his shallowness "turned off" by self-help guru Tony Robbins (who I thought did a good job, and came through as being very likeable), and falls in love with Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow), a shy, overweight girl, much to the dismay of his equally jerky pal, Jason Alexander. Hilarity does NOT ensue..... The film's only saving grace is Gwyneth; she brings a charm to the film that is just undeniable. But some of the plot contrivances were just too much...a shy 400+ pound girl is not going to wear a skimpy bikini to a public pool. There is a character in the film with Spina Bifida, and that character (and the actor portraying him) was the only really likeable one in the film, besides Rosemary. Maybe the Farrelly's should have made a movie about him..... And if you do go see this well meaning dud, stick around until after the credits roll....there's one last joke.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: I thought that Shallow Hal was very good. It was very funny and sweet. It has a very good message about inner beauty, and really now made me look at overweight people in a different way. I think it is worth seeing for sure.

Review: I'm a 16 year old high school student. I'm not ugly, but I am not a "cool guy" either. I saw this movie with a friend of mine. This friend was somewhat overweight. We wanted to see Mulholland Drive, but it wasn't playing in the theaters anymore because this bad movie was taking up 2 theaters. The movie was not funny at all. In quite a few scenes, I had to close my eyes because the ugly girls looked like monsters. This movie made fun of overweight people. I really feel sorry for any obese person that has to sit through this because it is basically the same as getting made fun of by a peer about your looks. I did not laugh once. Even when Hal is supposed to be hypnotized, he still picks girls solely on their looks. He sees them as supermodels, and he decides to ask them out based on that. This movie really made me sick. It is the Farrelly Brothers' worst movie ever. Don't be swayed by the hype. The critics are being bought. This was a waste of money, and I left the theater feeling worthless. The girls in the movie (the way Hal sees them when he is hypnotized)are hot. When you see how the women actually look like, you will want to turn your head away. This was closer to being a horror movie than a comedy. I have never had to close my eyes during a movie until this one. I have never felt like vomiting either. It was a disturbing film. It even gave me nightmares.

Summary: saddistic dark comedy
Review: The movie attempts to deface physical stereotypes, and misses grossly promoting inner stereotypes. I felt enticed to see the "comedy" by the trailer, but the movie itself is a total fiasco. The particular subject the producers attempted to tap into creates so many controversial thoughts about values, dignity, and personal beliefs, that it is very difficult to even attempt to reach a positive resolution at the end of the movie since ANY possible resolution will be in direct conflict among many people's belief system. Nonetheless, the producer opts for the kind of "decent" expected conclusion to follow despite the fact that indeed, it settles for yet another allopathy.

Summary: Okay, so it's not the funniest comedy---
Review: But the story was incredible. To try and pass this off as a comedy is a travesty, I'll admit, but once I understood the fact that I wasn't going to pee myself laughing, I could still really enjoy the movie.
Though some have found this movie offensive and say that it only helps to feed the stereotypes of beauty, I say that it really, in the end, has a wonderful message. To really go into my thoughts, I'd have to give the entire storyline away.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable flick that people should definately check out.

Summary: Better ways to throw away [money]
Review: It is rare I write a review here at amazon, only when something manages to rise high above my expectations or sink to new found depths do I feel the need to do so. Sadly, Shallow Hal, gives more then sufficient cause for me to have my say, and I can say honestly that it is perhaps the least entertaining movie I have seen of since Godzilla. The cast is not at fault, the direction is not particularly bad, but the movie is simply not funny. The writing is old and dull and the gags are both offensive and poorly executed. They tried to give the movie a heart, but you will spend more time nursing an uneasy feeling of guilt at the Farley brothers subject matter than you will enjoying any real laughs. You really don't have to think hard to find better things to do with your [money]!

Summary: If Only Men Could Change Like That!
Review: It was a good idea. Hey this is the movies - idealism, escapism. The character actually progressed and matured as a human being. I was entertained. I laughed. I appreciated the conversations. It kept my interest. I did squeeze out a tear when Hal realized who the burned girl was. I'll watch it again on video and have recommended it.
