Summary: Mr. Sandler does it again!
Review: Did you like Happy Gilmore? Did you like The Wedding Singer? Okay, then you'll like Mr. Deeds. I never saw the original movie, so maybe that's why I found no flaws in this version. Fans of the original didn't seem to like Sandler's treatment. But again, not having seen the original, I'm working off of a different perspective. This movie is done in typical Sandler style -- plenty of humor with an endearing quality. Sandler plays none other than Mr. Deeds, a back-woods guy with a good heart and not much business sense. Peter Gallagher plays a slimy businessman who worked with Deeds' uncle before he died. Upon the death, Sandler inherits a piece of his uncle's company, much to the dismay of Gallagher. The plot of the movie is a bit of fish out of water with Deeds going to the big city and staying in a mansion complete with a very funny servant. The love interest is of course Wynona Rider who plays a cut-throat reporter looking to get a big story in Deeds. To land the story, she poses as a down-home country girl herself to win Deeds' heart and trust. She succeeds, but in the process, loses her own heart to Deeds. Needless to say, the truth comes out and tables are turned. You'll have to watch the movie to find out what happens, and I suggest that you do. This is a good romantic comedy and further proves that everything Sandler touches is gold.

Summary: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Review: ...To see this movie! How could you like Adam, and not love this movie? Sure it's not a film that has a mantle of awards, but what Sandler film does. It was funny and I laughed atleast 50 times. The problem is your to busy comparing "MR. DEEDS" with the original "MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN". I'm 28 years old and "MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN" came out when I was like -52, my parents weren't even born then. I'm sorry If I agree with and appreciate Adam, Winona and director Steven Brill for breathing new life into an old classic that I would have never heard of otherwise. BRAVO! Ryder is beautiful and a remarkable actress, as for comments about her acting.. if you have doubts please see the following movies: "HEATHERS", "LITTLE WOMEN", "GIRL, INTERRUPTED", "MERMAIDS", "GREAT BALLS OF FIRE", "BEETLEJUICE", "THE CRUCIBLE", or just look up her name for other titles. Adam Sandler is funny and charming in this movie, just as he was in say.."THE WEDDING SINGER". "MR. DEEDS" is a very funny and entertaining movie with some wonderful talents. Just let it be. 4 STARS respectfully.

Summary: About as charming as a toothache
Review: So I guess Sandler bought the rights to Capra's classic and immediately cast himself in the starring role. First big mistake. Sandler is as winning a protagonist as Weird Al would be in "It's a Wonderful Life." He's no Gary Cooper. I wonder if he even watched the original.

And no, Winona is no Jean Arthur.

The original depression-era rags-to-riches classic is here reduced to an annoying "I'll show you" vehicle to make Sandler's fans cheer but the rest of us to ask, "What were they thinking?"

Summary: What Would YOU do for a Klondike bar?
Review: Some people will do anything. Apparently, Adam Sandler hit his creative peak during his mid-twenties. Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy were passable comedies. But, Mr. Deeds is just an embarrassment. The movie is just not funny, flat out. The only scene that I even snickered at was when Deeds and Johnny Mac are drunk and tearing up Manhattan, and I was only laughing because it reminded me of the Sandler of old in Billy Madison. Sandler as a total goofball can be admittedly funny but it seems that he is trying hard to become a "diversified" actor (see Punch Drunk Love). To make matters worse, Wynonna Ryder couldn't act her way out of a bag either, so you can pick your poison. She's so bad that you want to reach through the screen and place duct tape over her mouth. Anyway, avoid this film at all costs even on cable or free tv, it's such a waste of time. For Shame, Adam Sandler, For Shame...NOT RECOMMENDED.

Summary: JOHN TURTURRO STEALS THE SHOW...
Review: This is a re-make of Frank Capra's classic screwball comedy "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town". Though it is not anywhere nearly as good as the original, and Adam Sandler is no Gary Cooper, the original Mr. Deeds, the film is a decent enough production in its own right with some funny moments.

The story is about a very nice but naive, small town guy named Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler), who runs a pizzeria in New Hampshire and writes greeting card poetry as a hobby. He finds out that he has inherited forty billion dollars from a long lost, deceased uncle, who ostensibly had no other known living relative. So, Deeds is off to New York City to see about the administration of his new found mega-bucks.

While in New York he becomes the target of the tabloids, and his decent, small town values are made to look foolish, and he is mocked by its more sophisticated denizens. When ambitious journalist, Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder), goes undercover as a small town girl, setting up a false scenario and identity to meet our new billionaire and boast a journalistic coup, she ultimately finds herself falling in love with Deeds, charmed by his innate goodness and sincerity. Unfortunately, by then, the damage is done.

Pete Gallagher is suitably smarmy as Chuck Cedar, the CEO who is looking to take charge of Deeds' media empire. Erick Avari, as Cecil Anderson, an attorney and Chuck Cedar's accomplice, has his own comedic moments. Adam Sandler is, as always, Adam Sandler. He plays the role of Deeds as that of a simpleton and is, at times, funny without being too sophomoric. Winona Ryder is adequate as Babe Bennett but is no comedienne, and she takes a backseat to Jean Arthur, who played the part opposite Gary Cooper in the original version. Moreover, there is absolutely no on screen chemistry between Sandler and Ryder.

It is John Turturro, however, who shines in this film. In the role of Emilio Lopez, the deceased uncle's butler, he is truly funny, stealing the show in nearly every scene in which he appears. He is the one true shining star in this otherwise run-of-the-mill remake and the one reason for seeing this film. Look for cameos by Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, and Al Sharpton.

If one overlooks the somewhat ham-handed direction by Steven Brill, the unsubtle script by Tim Herlihy, and avoids making comparisons to the film on which this one is based, one will enjoy this movie, if only for John Turturro's hilarious, scene stealing performance.

Summary: Painful at best
Review: I always believed that the only reason one would "remake" or "remodel" a winning formula would be to improve it, and this is certainly NOT the case with this movie. The original "Mr Deeds Goes to Town" with Gary Cooper, isn't really comparable from the point of view that movies of that era (1930's)had a magical, almost surreal quality in delivering comedy, with underlying proverbial messages, and were not crass and exploitative. This modern retelling of an old story is fairly simple (and has been done many times)as we follow local "hayseed" nobody (Sandler) suddenly being discovered to be a millionaires aire. Therein we are to be treated to his funny exploits adjusting to his new life, whilst retaining his simple country charm, and bringing humility to the ignorant upper classes with common grace. I'm not a Sandler fan, but don't criticize anyone who is, as comedy is so subjective, that having been said, this really is a very very poor performance. Formula laughs at their worst can't save a weak script, and whereas fans will like this kind of aimless distraction, it's funny how most people who have reviewed the movie seem to be more impressed by John Turturro's cameo, than that of the films star. Probably a good one for teenagers, but hardly memorable.

Summary: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Wow! What a great movie! I was laughing all the way throught this hilarious comedy about a young man named Longfellow Deeds (Sandler) whos uncle leaves him an enormous fortune after he dies of 40 Billion dollars!!! First, Mr. Deeds meets a girl, so called "Pam Dawson" who is supposedly a school nurse from Winchestertonfieldsville, Iowa. Hahaha! What a bad liar! The two love each other, and end up sort of becoming girlfriend/boyfriends. Somehow, Deeds keeps seeing footage of himself, on the show Inside Access, doing some rulebreaking out on the streets and getting drunk. Also, the footage of him saving peoples' lives is turned upside-down to make him look like a loser. After pondering for many days of how the footage was taken, Longfellow Deeds finds out the truth about "Pam Dawson" and how the footage was taken. This is a great movie with laughs for everyone in the family, so rent it, grab a bowl of popcorn, sit down, and enjoy this hysterical comedy!

Summary: Not Sandler's worst but still awfully stupid
Review: This movie is just a hack job; a bunch of well-known actors & actresses going through the motions to collect a paycheck. Of course, who can blame them? They were handed a hack script that was just paint by the numbers --- introduce your good guys & your villains, and then the characters with mixed a agenda, but who have a change of heart at the end. Make sure the bad guys and the stuffed shirts get their comeuppance, blah blah blah.

This movie was dull and predictable, and just not funny AT ALL. A movie where a man smashing another man's frostbitten foot with a fire poker passes for humor is just simply wretched fare. I couldn't get it out of the VCR fast enough.

That having been said --- unfortunately --- this is far from Sandler's worst work, and as such, deserves a second star for the (cough) lofty heights it has reached.

Summary: One of Sandler's Classics
Review: Everyone who critizies this movie and even thinks about calling this movie Adam Sandler's worst doesn't know a good movie when they see one. This shows the other side of adam sandler, not the crazy guy like in billy madison, but a softer side with a sense of humor. I can't stand people who critize this movie just because it has an actual storyline to it...God forbid a movie having a storyline to it...because you know billy madison was defintely a good movie because it had a storyline (yeah right..) See this movie because it shows adam sandler has a much more talented actor side then we all thought...and for the people who thought this movie was bad..wake up and realize that movies aren't always about comedy...

Summary: VERY GOOD
Review: This movie is very funny. The whole idea of some hillbille-redneck getting 40 billion dollors from his uncle who died in an accident on MT. Everest. The guy then gets all these reporters going after him and eventually going out with a reporter who thinks she's a virgin, school nurse. The reporter falls in love with the main guy (Adam Sandler) right before Adam Sandler's character finds out that she's a reporter and DEFINATELY not a virgin and breaks up with her. The main guy then does a few things and fires the "evil guy" from the corporation. Then the guy and the girl get was. Also, the main guy publishes a greeting card.
This movie had a lot of laughs, especially with the main character's greeting cards, and a great plot. I give the music a rating of 7/10. This movie is great.
