Summary: "A CRUEL JOKE?"
Review: I recall it was Great Bette Davis who aptly said that "Sex is a cruel joke" or something like that, then there was also Talullah Bankhead's, err... 'claustrophobic' comment. ANYHOW, this movie will make you laugh out loud [lighten up now!] It's very funny, well composed and stars that little jewel - CHRISTINA RICCI as our somewhat cynical narrator.

One could also term this one "Sunday Bloody Sunday, the teen years". This one has everything, a slightly pregnant 'child-bride to be", the obligatory always forgiving gay-half-brother [add well-off too], a hunky bi-{?}-lover [Lisa Kudrow's line about this confession is priceless!] Yep, this boy certainly does have rabbits between the ears, the 'silently suffering' spinster, oh, the list does go on, even a muder, well, maybe not.

AND it does teach you a new thing or possibly two or three. Shakes everything up about being uptight. Miss Ricci, is perfect as the young manipulating teen - Boy she is smart!
'Plot' is the wrong term, but she does get her own little way and very nicely too.

GREAT escapist fun with a tiny ring of the true thing today.....

Summary: A comedy of (bad) manners.
Review: A deliciously catty comedy that deserved all the acclaim it received when it was released theatrically. Christina Ricci takes the ball and runs with it in a signature performance as DeeDee Truitt, an acid-tongued teen who gets into all sorts of trouble when she moves in to live with her brother. The film is something of an acquired taste, and the humor may be a bit too racy for some. Already-established fans should definitely grab this one while first-time viewers might want to give this a rental to see if it's their cup of tea.

Summary: Not a good movie
Review: This film isn't good... it's too unrealistic. The characters (especially the brother in the film) are totally lacking any character. The plot is very weak (there isn't a plot) and the film is totally predictable.

Summary: Looking for something different?
Review: In a time when big-budgeted special effects laden films abound, it is nice to find as well written and superbly acted, as is this one. The entire cast is excellent with Ricci proving that she is one of the most gifted talents in Hollywood. Contrary to what an earlier reviewer said, Johnny Galecki's performance is highly entertaining and no more "over the top" than is "Will & Grace's" Sean Hayes. Ivan Sergei is amusing in his role as the slightly "confused" object of Ricci's affection.

However, Lisa Kudrow really "bites" with her commentary and "explanations" for the entire off-the-wall goings on surrounding her. She is deserving of greater big-screen exposure.

Maybe then Helen Hunt might have some competition!

Summary: Good little film...
Review: I had to write a response to the previous reviewer's complaints about Johnny Galecki's performance as a gay man. Yes, he's over-the-top and, yes, Hollywood needs to make films with gay men that are less stereotypical. But, you can't deny that guys like Galecki exist and he certainly is not a sympathetic character to begin with. I know lots of queens like him and felt his performance was true to that. Now, off the soapbox...lol. If you like funny, disturbing films and aren't offended by unusual themes or strong language, you'll like this. Ricci is great and Lisa Kudrow should have been nominated for an Oscar. She finally nabs a role that lets her get away from the ditzy Phoebe-type characters she's slowly becoming typecast in. She's great, as is the cast as a whole. If you liked 'Go' or 'Election', you'll like this, too.

Summary: Christina should have stayed with The Addams Family
Review: If Christina Ricci was looking for a role to separate her from the roles she's played before, this wasn't the one to take. She is definately worthy of a better performance and script.

The plot is missing and the acting is bad. From so many talented actors, it is a great disappointment. Johnny Galecki's nauseating performance as a gay man is insulting to the gay community.

The production itself was disasterous with bad sound and at times lighting.

Definately a movie not to watch.

Summary: Confused girl.
Review: The Opposite of Sex is that kind of drama-comedy that give an improvising plot, with no direction and no solution. Cristina Ricci is convincing in her role as the confused girl, the other gay boys are not completely involved in this kind of theme, they only can produce a mediocre acting work. This kind of film is not for the mature audience, because it gives no solution or a rational ending to the exposed problem.

Summary: a solidly acted, engaging comedy
Review: i read a review of 'the opposite of sex' that claimed erroneously that the opposite of sex is friendship. but, it didn't seem to me that was the film's message at all. i don't think this small-scale, black comedy is anywhere near that glib and i think the critic did the movie a disservice. i watched it only yesterday, so it is still fresh in my mind as i write this review. it is far from a great film, it drags a bit in places, but the performances are excellent. if you like lisa kudrow as phoebe in friends, you will like her here. if you don't like lisa kudrow as phoebe in friends, you will probably still like her here. she brings a subtlety to her role of a frustrated spinster-in-the-making that is absent in her sitcom character, but retains all the comic timing from her tv work has taught her. christina ricci's comic timing and ability to steal scenes has never been in doubt since making her mark in the addams family. she is excellent here, and much of the humour in the film comes from ricci's droll voice over. she has a pleasing little crack in her voice that perfectly fits her role of deedee, a wiseacre little sixteen year old troublemaker who comes like a whirlwind into her gay stepbrother's life. she even manages to undermine the potential sentimentality at the end of the picture. if you have liked ricci in anything (addams family, buffalo 66, sleepy hollow) this is a performance well worth checking out. enjoyable comedy fare with some real points to make about relationships and a few real bellylaughs. the response from ricci whilst in labour when kudrow asks if she is having contractions is worth the admission price alone.

Summary: Wickedly funny, well-written and -acted
Review: "The opposite of sex" has some implausible setups, but delivers big. It was the best black comedy between "To die for" and "Election." It shares with those films some VERY dim males who are easily and ruthlessly manipulated by amoral females.

Christine Ricci, who was honed in "Addams Family" movies and in "Ice Storm," was given great material for her voiceovers here. Martin Donovan has the thankless task of being mature and nearly saintly in facing betrayal, persecution, and the well-justified ire of the frustrated Lisa Kudrow as the sister of his dead lover, who is also a fellow teacher and carrying a torch for him. She gets some good lines. Indeed, between the two actresses get almost all the good lines. The boytoy played by Ivan Sergei (Isn't that two given names?) is allowed some insight near the end, but since he looks like a cross between Pete Sampras and the young Robbie Benson (which is to say like a generic International Male model), he is pleasant to look at throughout. Lyle Lovett is sweetly persistent and the antithesis of handsome.

Summary: Fantastic! One you'll watch again and again.
Review: I picked this one up in London, never having heard of it before. I read the back of the DVD, thought it might be mildly amusing, and took it home. Why have I never heard of this film? It was sidesplitting, and all the while you almost feel guilty since you are literally laughing at others' misery. The lines are some of the best I have ever heard, but way across the line as far as our PC peers are concerned. Example: "They say that Aids is God's revenge on homosexuals, but it doesnt seem to be working. There seem to be more now than ever!" The story follows Ricci, a 16 year old Dragon lady in the making, who becomes pregnant, seduces her brother's boyfriend, steals his ex-lover's ashes and tries to blackmail him for cash through an ex-student of his claiming he was molested while in school. All the while, Kudrow's sexually frustrated (but hardly frigid) character serves as confidante to the brother, dropping thsese fantastic lines as she meddles and generally makes his life an even greater mess. Each character is recognisable, even down to Lovett's ugly cop with a big heart and open mind. What a shame I took so long to see this tremendously enjoyable film!
