Summary: Clever, very funny and a bit raunchy!!
Review: "Groove Tube" is a series of sketches, some really belly-laugh funny, all clever, some in questionable taste. Ken Shapiro steals the show and Chevy Chase does a couple of sketches that he later copied in Saturday Night Live. It also reminds me of the TV show "Laugh-In" that came later.

Summary: Get comfortable with an adult beverage....
Review: ....and enjoy this classic spoof flick. I remember this flick as the first movie I ever sneaked into as a kid. Some of the skits are simply solid gold classics... others may leave you offering up only a pity chuckle. That is a good thing tho because you will need those lulls to get control of your laughing from the truely hilarious stuff this movie has to offer.

Definately watch this one when the kids are out.

Summary: If you have a shanker on your privates...
Review: Anyone who doesn't get the humor in this classic needs to get a life. Bad taste? No kidding! One of the funniest movies of all time. Complaints about the lack of dvd extras are pointless since the movie's budget was so small, we all are lucky to have the movie itself to enjoy. Is there any film out there that takes you back to the carefree days of hippiedom better than this one? Okay, I'm really nostalgic since I saw it at the age of 13 (along with Flesh Gordon), and was infatuated with the girl in the VeeDub for about 2 years. Also, I think I may be related to Koko the clown... Seriously, I somehow got the email of Lane Sahronson (the assassin, the cop and the movie's co-writer) and he was told me what a blast it was to make the film and that he wasn't in touch with Ken Shapiro any longer (too bad- I would love a sequel). Think I'll get my copy out tonight, crack open a Butz beer and 'move on up.' Groovy!

Summary: Not gut-busting,
Review: but not totally junk, by any means. When GT was released, the humor was kind of funny-crude and a few sketches were a little eye-opening. But that was then. Today, a decent amount remains funny, other things you wonder why you ever found funny, and still others weren't even funny when the film came out (the dealers, for example, which you can FF right through without missing a beat). Boittom line: yes, it's worth watching, but don't expect YOung Frankenstein, y'know? Like any comedy sketch film, it's uneven.

Summary: Primal Man Says The Groove Tube Rocks!
Review: But what did he know. Later on, while drumming with two sticks that burst into flame, primal man seemed distracted from the television.

Released in 1972, The Groove Tube is a series of short takes and skits and is very 60's. Watch it once just to get an idea of the state-of-mind of the times, and be on the look-out for little surprises. There's equality in nudity for men an women alike. No one is spared. That's how it was in those days. Koko the Clown gives the best explanation after he tells all the boys and girls to make sure their parents have left the room. He's a mix of Saturday Night Live's 'Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood' meets the 'Soupy Sales Show'. 'The Hitchhiker', not to the galaxy, but here on earth, is self explanatory. Tucked in the middle is a public service announcement about VD, told by a genuine authority who chooses to remain incognito wearing a funny moustache and rimmed glasses. Chevy Chase is featured in one of the skits.

Keep this away from your children and watch it when they're asleep. Make sure. Have a good laugh at yourself if you were coming up in those times. Did we really dress like that? Yes we did and those styles are coming back.

Summary: THEATRICAL MASTERPIECE
Review: chevy chase delivers an oscar worthy performance. richard belzer establishes himself as a first class actor with this absolutely smashing performance. with the combination of exceptional screenplay and spell binding special effects, the groove tube speaks in volumes. if siskel and ebert were still together, they would give this movie a 12 out of 10, and 3 thumbs up!!!!!!! THE ACID INHIBITING APES AT THE MOVIES FIRST SCENE, SET THE TONE FOR AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER RIDE THAT IS TODAY BECOME A TIMELESS CLASSIC IN THE THEATRICAL WORLD. TASTY SAM, I LIKE TO CALL THEM MY LITTLE GUYS IN DISGUISE, WERE JUST EARTH SHATTERING. THIS MOVIE IS NUMBER 1.

Summary: STILL FUNNY AFTER 25 YEARS!!
Review: Definately, a film before its time. Poking fun at real issues that have become serious concerns to us now.

Summary: As Unfunny as the TV it mocks
Review: First of all, in response to an earlier review, I grew up in the 70s so I get it and it is crap. I liked LOOSE SHOES, KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE and AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON, but this film, from the man who brought us MODERN PROBLEMS and then faded from humanity's recorded history, is utterly lame. I guess P.T. Barnum was right about a sucker being born every minute and they are posting the positive reviews here. I challenge anyone to tell me what is funny about Chevy Chase singing while someone plays air drums on his head. The hitchhiker scene sets the tone for this junk - naked flesh and toilet humor aplenty. I have got nothing against toilet humor.....when it's funny. The clown sequence was mildly amusing for a fleeting moment and that is about it. The Dealers segment makes you appreciate Cheech & Chong all the more because, even stoned, this skit is a bummer, man. I could go on, but there is really no point.

Summary: Great Satire of T.V.
Review: Groove Tube is a collection of parodies of popular culture similar to "Kentucky Fried Movie". But while Groove Tube is far inferior to KFM, it is superior to "Amazon Women on the Moon", and more closely matches KFM in its lewdness.

The only real weakness with Groove Tube is that much of its satire focuses upon television. Therefore, unlike the movies parodied in KFM and AWOTM, much of the source material satirized in Groove Tube is no longer available or as much in the public mind. For example, there is a parody of a famous commercial from the 1970s with the sexist line "My wife, I think I'll keep her". All the parodies can be enjoyed on their own, but they lose some of their punch if you are unfamiliar with what they're making fun of.

Of course, most of the sentiments covered in the movie are still part of the culture, so the parody still works if you are unfamiliar with 1970s television, and there are a few parodies of things everyone knows, like Kubrick's 2001. And you don't have to, e.g., sit through reruns of such shows as Starsky and Hutch to appreciate the long sketch about two buddy drug dealers starring Richard Belzer (perhaps this sketch portrays his cop character's hinted at rebellious days?).

But definitely try out "Kentucky Fried Movie" first if you haven't already, then only get this if you enjoy KFM.

Summary: The Groove Tube is not Saturday Night Live but...
Review: Gross, outdated, crude, disgusting, a little drawn out in spots, and one of the funniest films ever! Mostly carried by Ken Shapiro & Richard Belzer, the film blasts away typical TV programming in rapid funny fashion. From the hilarious 2001 opening spoof to the Koko the clown sketch, the dealers (which hangs on too long after the great movie theatre scene), the News, the olympics, and safety sam, it's pure fun. One other recurring performer is Chevy Chase in the Geritan commercial, one of the highpoints of the film, as well as the fingers, and a quirky rendition of Four Leaf Clover. It's no Academy Award winner, and it isn't as clever or classy as SNL, but it's good for gross-out humor lovers. It's a classic that has been followed by, or in some cases imitated by Tunnelvision, Kentucky Fried Movie and Amazon Women On The Moon. Check it out!
