Summary: A Keeper
Review: One of the greatest 'indie' films by far. Hope Davis needs to get up there to A list because she is among the finest actresses around these days. She blows away Julia Roberts/Michelle Pfeiffer, etc. This woman is talented. The writers/producers of this movie are also geniuses. I look forward to many more of their films.

Summary: One of the best romantic comedies in the 90's
Review: Perfect combination of whimsy and intellect. 'You've Got Mail' it's not, and thank heavens for that! Hope Davis is pitch-perfect as a disoriented, lovelorn nurse. For once, the heroine is not a quivering disaffected damsel in distress with a penchant for cute one-liners. The movie works despite the fact that the guy and the girl don't meet until the very end, because it's a reflection on fate and chance...therefore on the nature of 'a perfect love.' Most of the times, romantic comedies resort to a sort of candied comedy of errors, and it's refreshing to see a film that takes an alternate, more thought-provoking route. The main characters do not meet even though there are so many chance occasions, and it seems that they are not destined to meet. Yet they meet in a train, she runs into his arms by 'sheer chance' when suffering a sense of vertigo, and this act of chance really turns out to be something that was fated upon light reflection. See the inversion? How whimsical! Everything in the story is set up to perfection, even the Thoreau quote is used to a funny effect without an air of knowing condescension. One of the most satisfying/thoughtful endings to a romantic comedy I've ever seen.

Summary: Hilarious view of dating in the "real world"
Review: So many times, dating is portrayed on film as wonderful all the time, with the main character finding his or her soul mate--and then the film is usually about their struggles together. In this film, the "truth of the matter" comes out--dating is hard, and finding the right person is even harder! Hope Davis plays a great single woman who's not 22 and perfect looking. If for no other reason, rent this video to see the blind dates she ends up on. Hilarious!

Summary: Adventurous and Old-fashioned
Review: Talented second-time director Brad Anderson has made a surprisingly smart, subtle, and funny film about romantic destiny vs. cynicism, loyalty to one's identity vs. risk-taking, and self-sufficiency vs. the desire to connect with others. Hope Davis and the wonderful supporting cast make every scene and character believable--and, more importantly, make you care deeply about their struggles. Anderson keeps the rich and complex plot simmering from the first frame, in which we see Davis's character walking down the street looking startled to find her boyfriend dumping his possessions out of her apartment window, to the last, a stunning and fateful encounter on a subway train. The personal ad dating sequences in the middle of the film are worth the price of admission alone, and the final scene will simply leave you breathless. No doubt in part through the help of the evocative bossa nova soundtrack that permeates every scene, Anderson manages to maintain a sense of playfulness and adventure in this film even while standing up for such unfashionable virtues as consistency, family loyalty, and traditional (vs. pragmatic) methods of meeting people.

Summary: What a darling little flick!
Review: These 5 stars are coming from someone who shys away for the sappy and typically goes for the hardcore action/drama genre. I was completely surprised at how much I loved this little movie! Hope Davis was wonderful- truly and believably shocked at every turn by the actions of the bumbling men she comes across. I found myself laughing out loud and completely enjoying not only the plot, the characters, and the scenery, but the soundtrack as well. Great pick!

Review: This is my favorite movie of all time, no other movie comes close to the down to earth hilarious comedy of this movie. Hope Davis is absolutely amazing and takes on the role perfectly. Don't waste your money on any blockbuster till you have seen this one. A great movie to see with anyone.

Review: This movie has to be one of my favorites...I love everything about this movie. I truly enjoyed every minuite of this movie. It is not one of those really expensive movies, but it is better than most of them. I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. I will buy the tape when the price is reasonable...and so should you!!

Summary: Wonderful, wonderful wonderland
Review: This movie is an unexpected gem. I have just finished watching it for the 6th time, and I am still in awe of its subtle humour and the empathy with which it depicts all its characters. The only thing I don't like about this video is its misleading cover. Hope Davis perches coyly atop a subway train, slit skirt revealing plenty of thigh and low-cut top framing lotsa cleavage. A strappy sandal dangles from one foot. But in fact, one of the myriad beauties of this film is that Erin (deftly played by Davis) is not a frisky, flirtatious kind of gal, and never appears in any outfit more revealing than a nubby turtleck and jeans. Erin is a sensitive soul who has been in pain ever since the death of her beloved father, and she masks her true nature with a prickly veneer. She wants to fall in love but fights it every step of the way. The cover of the video implies yet another dumb, cutesie comedy with another giggly, adorable heroine (you know... the "You've got Mail" variety) But the movie inside is rich, delicate and highly intelligent. Don't let the packaging fool you.

Summary: a journey of the heart
Review: This movie is for anyone who has been in love, or is in love, or wants to be in love. The line that I will remember always is "To be alone is fine. Being alone together is perfect" I think each of us in our own way can relate to the character that Hope Davis portrays. We all have to believe that love is out there somewhere and the journey to find it may not be easy, but we will get there someday.
