Summary: Great movie about wonderful people and places.
Review: This is one gut-bustin funny movie. I had lived up in the UP for some time and can say that there really are people like this up there. Not all of them or even the majority of them to be sure, but if you get into some of the real back-woods communities you will see them. I know that some youpers don't like the way that youpers are protrayed in the movie and am sorry for that. Many of the people in the UP have never ventured out of the towns that they grew up in to the point that they themselves don't know that people like these in the movie actually live up there.

Review: Escanaba in Da Moonlight is a mixed bag,as far as movies go. It's an entertaining story-silly in some spots-and fairly well made,but it has it's drawbacks as well. For one thing,many of the UP residents have found it to be somewhat ridiculing and demeaning in it's portrayal of them. No,we do NOT talk like they do in the movie-no broken speech filled with "dese,dose,and dems"-and,No,we do Not all go insane during Deer Season,nor are all UP women fat drunken bar sluts filling up the bars during hunting season. All UP residents do Not go about dressed like some sort of fur trapper,either. If you can take the ludicrous distortions of the people,their speech and mannerisms and keep in mind that we are Not like that up here in the Peninsula,it is,indeed,a pretty funny film!
As far as Jeff Daniels,himself,unfortunately,I can find nothing much to say good about him,other than he is a fairly decent actor. When this film was being made in Escanaba,the call went out for locals(women in particular)to come try out for parts as extras. Plenty showed up-thrilled to be even a bit part in a movie. They were made to understand that although they would recieve no pay,that their Names would be listed in the credits as "extras". These people in some cases had to drive considerable distances to get there-two days in a row,all at their own expenses. Some took time off from work,and had to leave their families to do this. Once there,they were told they were'nt allowed to even ask Daniels for an autograph. When the film was shown,these extras eagerly made sure to watch it,only to find at the end. that the credits had'nt even a hint of their names on it. After the cold treatment they had recieved,this certainly left a sour and disappointing feeling. I realize that the stadium crowd scenes made such things impractical,but Certainly,the smaller scene extras-such as the bar scenes,could have been treated better.
So,all in all,I give the movie a 3 star Rating. A funny flick,if you ignore the short-comings. Go see it-you'll laugh and enjoy yourself! But Daniels and his treatment of his pay-free extras? If there was a Zero Star rating,it would be his.

Review: This movie was hilarious. My whole family went to see it and we laughed histerically from beginning to end. We vacation every year in the UP so we really appreciate the humor of the movie. Jeff Daniels is wonderful and we love all of his movies.

Review: We roared when watching this movie because we are from Michigan and are very familiar with the Mackinac Bridge and the "da" and "ya" of the language. We also are familiar with the seriousness of hunting in our state. We had a ball watching it. There are so many funny parts to this movie, that we literally giggled throught the whole movie, along with the entire theatre guests. If you need to laugh, this is the movie to rent. Enjoy!

Review: I've spent time in the U.P. and have friends from there. I found the movie had its own charms - with the added bonus of some crazy "aliens" business. It was obviously a stage play and had that certain stage to screen "feel" about it - not necessarily a bad thing.

Escanaba has a lot of heart and just enough weirdness to make it work. Daniels and his cast obviously believe in the material (he'd better - he wrote it) and that pays off in a very watchable, film. Taking place in a single day and night (the day before opening day of hunting season) this little movie takes off with a bang and rips through male bonding, family secrets, ancient ritual, metaphysics, philosophy, sibling rivalry, UFOs, aliens, God and farting.

A heckuva lot of fun for a little movie with wonderful performances from the entire cast.
