Summary: Not your typical teen movie
Review: Here's a movie that's greatly underrated, a dark, biting satire that takes place during a high-school election. More about characters and how they really behave instead of the fantasy world too often portrayed in other teen movies. Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick give performances that have to be seen to believe. Unfortunately, the only DVD extra is a audio commentary by the director.

Summary: A gem of a movie -- crude and rough, brilliant in insight
Review: This movie is a work of genius -- a bitingly sharp look at the madness of high school life and its surprising resemblance to American society. Reese Witherspoon has just played what I think is the most memorable female movie character of 1999 -- almost to perfection (and I watched a LOT of movies last year!). The plot twists, the dialogue scathes, the subliminal carnage will make you mad. This is a very smart movie cloaked in the guise of a trendy teen-hype-MTV facade. It challenges changing perceptions of morality (and ethics!) and never apologizes for its crudeness. The humor, placed in the context of subtle but overwhelming mental and emotional abuse, is powerful, intelligent and can stick like a nasty gum, even in the open mind. All the characters here manipulated people, were victimized, used, loved, hated, provoked, cheated, redeemed -- it's epic simplicity is amazing. Definitely one heck of a ride -- not for the morally-uptight -- you may want to take some stress-relieving pills to stomach this one.

Summary: Practically Flawless.
Review: "Election" received better reviews by movie critics worldwide and it's no surprise why. This is one of the most original, merciless and HILARIOUS comedies that I've ever seen. The actors deserve several Oscar nominations for their wonderful acting. A job well done!

Summary: A raging Election
Review: If you watch this expecting a typical Hollywood comedy about high school, you will either be gravely disappointed or very pleasantly surprised. This is an extremely sharp, witty satire that tells us nothing we didn't already know, but manages to make its truths absolutely hilarious. The writing here is top-notch, the dialogue is flawless, and Broderick and Witherspoon both execute their roles perfectly.

Summary: Unique and Original
Review: At least it isn't an everyday She's All That, or 10 THings I Hate About You. It had a semi boring plot, but the wonderful acting and houmor made it very interesting and fun. Reese Witherspoon (Pleasentville) and Matthew Broderick (Ferris Buellers Day Off) came together to make a wonderful acting pair. The only reason I saw it is the first place is because I love Matthew Broderick, and am I ever glad I did, this is definetly worth at least watching, and even buying, if you like it as much as I did. Kids, don't watch it with your parents!

Summary: Funny in a mean sort of way....
Review: Election was everything the critics claimed -- funny, a biting satire, bla bla bla.... It was a little startling to see people in a movie who were not even remotely gussied up, if you know what I mean. Most movies -- even the unconventional and/or independent ones -- make dysfunction just a teensy bit glamorous (ie, American Beauty). But while I appreciated that, and while I like a black comedy as much as anyone, in the end Election came off feeling pretty mean. Hmmmm.Reese Witherspoon turned in a *fabulous* performance as a hyperachiever on speed. The rest of the cast was also good, including Matthew Broderick, but Reese makes the movie for me.

Review: I'm no prude, but I was appalled by the lack of morality of these unlikable characters. It's not sex in film that offends me, it's the complete casualness toward adultery. It's almost as if the immature minds at MTV are brazenly trying to attack traditional values as fiercely as possible. The amount of gratuitous sex was insulting (this is from someone who thought Eyes Wide Shut was one of the best films of the year) and was more of a turnoff than anything else. For better teenage-themed movies, try 10 Things I Hate About You or Go - this one was definitely a disappointment.

Review: this movie is ok, has some laughs. but by the last 38 minutes the movie seems to have ran out of gas, its like they slowly trudged their way through this as fast as they could. and the movie missed alot of great places for a joke. the teenage stereotypes were unbearable, we had the not really smart popular jock, the modern misunderstood lesbian 90's MTV girl, and alot of others. but one holy relic saving grace is Matthew Broderick, i've never seen him in a role like this and he plays it great. see it for Matthew Broderick, then burn it.

Review: What a waste of time... This movie has been praised as beingone of the best comedies of the year, but I found it to be nothingmore than a dark expedition into the minds of two very sad and pathetic characters... I only watched it to completion in the hope that it would somehow redeem itself. It didn't. If you find you're not enjoying this film after the first twenty minutes, don't waste your time watching the rest of it. In terms of DVD extras... there are NONE! END

Summary: A subtle classic of American cinema
Review: Election was not popular in America, and it's mainly because it viciously attacks everything the USA holds dear. This is exectly why this is such a brilliant black comedy, but if you're the type of person who prefers 'comedies' like American Pie then this is definitely not for you. It ridicules everything - the sexual pysche of the wounded male ego, high school hierarchy systems, the teacher-pupil relationship - whilst at the same time satirising American politics. Payne's commentary on the DVD is informative, but it would have been nice to have a feature on the making of it of or an analysis of the intentions of the script from people involved. Hell, a trailer would have been good, but buy the DVD for the film, a classic of American cinema which doesn't need to be in your face to make its point. Well worth your money.
