Summary: I could not agree more with this board!
Review: Reading these reviews is like finding a civilization on the other side of the deserted island on which I been stranded and starving for quite some time. Yes, notwithstanding the oft asserted negative commentary concerning Toys, I believe Toys is an absolute masterpiece and I have always wondered if Barry Levinson was pleased with the outcome. I truly hope he was. Realistic human interaction amidst the most fantastic surreality makes Toys one of a very unique breed of comedy. Williams' character and improv is fantastic. Robin Wright is convincing in a role that makes that difficult. Joan Cusack is hilarious - brilliant delivery. Jack Warden has one of the greatest cameo characters of all time. Oh, and LL Cool J kills me. The list goes on and on. As said by others, you'll likely love it or hate it. A few great lines:

"But Miss Zevo, the sandwich will get all soggy."
"Is this room getting smaller or are we getting attacked by a giant crossword puzzle."
"Change sides."
"I like my vegetables quarantined. I build a fortress with my potatoes...[?]"
"Sir, we're in the supply closet."
"Schrapnel"

Summary: This just *has* to be one of the most underrated films¿
Review: ...of all time! I for one rank this high on my list of favourite movies that can be seen over and over (a few words on my Comedy preferences; I like almost anything from Chaplin, Keaton and the Marx brothers to Woody Allen, Steve Martin and the Farrelly brothers...).

If you enjoyed Frauds, Beetlejuice, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and similar fantasy-style slightly insane comedies, you will probably like this one too. Though it is a film for the kid in us, it also has a clear message for the grownups: Authority may be a dominating force in many people's lives, but true love always wins in the end...

Sorry for this short and spontaneous review, but I just *had* to counterpoint the above highly unfair criticism the moment I read it...

Summary: Toys a magical movie
Review: This movie is filled with the joy and mirth of being a kid again. When the owner of the peaceful toy company ZEVO TOYS dies thinking his son (Robin Williams) is ready to inheret the company he leaves it to his 3 star general brother. Who devises a dastardly plot. It is up to Zevo, his sister, his girlfriend, the general's son (L.L Cool Jay) and a Zevo employee to foil the plot. This movie is a great adventure and beautiful sets. Directed by Barry Levison

Summary: Unfairly Disparaged
Review: People love to bash this movie for what they see as "bad acting, bad script, bad plot, bad directing etc." However, this is only due to the movie's style being taken out of context. This movie is exceedingly surreal and fabulous within that context. Take this movie out of that context and you will find it terrible. Those who don't like it do so only because of a persional taste, which is understandable. But, do let their opinions cloud the more important issues. That said, here are the specs: (in a very small nutshell) A toy factory owner dies, leaving it to his militaristic brother, who begins to alter the factory, leading to the former owners son and daughter to fight back. The movie is very different, anyone who enjoys Monty Python movies, or Douglas Adams books, will like this movie. The anti-war message will also appeal to all peace-loving citizens. I highly recommend this movie.

Summary: BELOW PAR COMEDY
Review: Sadly this comedy misses it's potential in a big way. Robin Williams stars in this eccentric and feeble comedy, playing Leslie Zevo, the nephew of the general (Michael Gambon) who inherits his brother's toy factory and so decides only to manufacture war games, tanks and guns. So Leslie (Robin Williams) decides to stop his uncle by turning the toy shop into a war zone. You will gasp at the extravagent, spectacular sets and costumes but apart from that there's very little interest. The film limps along at a sluggish pace and has no real sense of direction. Robin Williams does his best but he is one of his weaker roles here. A rather nondescript affair.

Summary: Compelling coming-of-age-but-keep-the-inner-child-alive film
Review: Odd title for a review, I know, but I just had to make my comments here after reading some of the other reviews. First, I must say that's it does me good to see that so many others enjoyed this film. I thought I was the only one for quite some time! After Maltin's butchering and a few low viewer ratings, it's great to see that it's got 4.5 stars!!

This movie drew me in to it's story on every level. I watched it alone the first time and I enjoyed it immensely. The movie is about a man who wants to see his son become mature enough to take over the family business, yet not become so "adult" that he ruins the whole purpose of the factory and his dream. That is, as many other reviewers put it, a whimsical world where imagination rules the roost - as if to say "Use your mind to create fun-loving, happy things to make the world a more innocent place." That's what toy company's are all about after all, aren't they? The father knows that the only way he can make his son "grow up" and realize his destiny is to see the factory taken over and polluted with anger, hatred, and distrust. Williams' character's environment is invaded and he fights to regain it's - and his - integrity.

Like others, I loved the scenery and music. Both reminded me more of a fantastical realm where anything is possible and dreams could be acheived. The field of tall grass alone was so neat. It seemed like every single blade was cut to the exact same height.

This movie is VERY anti-war and anti-static-adult-thinking. It is my beleif that, yes, we all need to grow up, but why not have some fun and enjoy the "toys" along the way. Don't deny the inner child, but also know when to be serious. That's the point I think Levinson was trying to make and I think he did it well.

Summary: My favorite types of movies are surreal and this IS SURREAL!
Review: This movie is misunderstood by people who usually think that good movies are the "action-packed thriller ones" or in my words the stupid repetative ones. If you read this review than please see the movie, the visual effects are great even though they aren't all "3D animation" why my opinion on that crap is it is easy to program, (believe me I've done it!) This is different these are sets that are painted and done to enhance the movies story, which I personally thought was innovative. The music is also good it goes with the scenes well and is interesting. Overall, this movie is a great! I definitly reccomend you go see it!

Summary: The stupidest Robin Williams movie, but not the worst...
Review: Robin Williams is very funny. Joan Cusack is always goofy. Jack warden always shines. But this movie featuring those talent is one over stuffed movie. This only has about 1 belly half every 30 minutes, but the script seems to keep it going. Robin Williams doesn't look too happy, but Joan Cusack does. playing brother/sister they together must stop his evil brother from making dangerous war toys. Micheal Landon plays the evil brother, and Jack Warden plays his father. Very long. Not for young children. Naming this movie Toys was bad. The movie talks about sex and there is gore. Very cooky.

Summary: One of my all time favorites, but clearly not for everyone
Review: This is clearly a film you either love or hate - you either get it or you don't. In my case, I think it's a masterpiece. It gets more hilarious and meaningful with each viewing, so I could see how one viewing might turn some people away. I've shown it two 7 or 8 people, and they are pretty evenly split in their opinions. The music is fantastic (Pat Metheny and Grace Jones no less!), the visuals are stunning, and Robin Williams is at his improvisational best. One of the funniest scenes is an exchange among toy designers regarding various "flavors" of fake vomit - each given an appropriatly catchy title depending on the ethnic or type of food involved.

To me this film provides a path to appreciating "whimsy" in the world of adulthood. I believe director Barry Levinson achieved exactly what he was after in creating this film, and am just sorry it didn't click with more people. I wish it would be released on DVD, as I just watched my VHS copy for the umpteenth time after watching DVDs for the past month.

Summary: Quirky --but I liked it!
Review: I can see how some people might not care for this movie, but I really really like it! The best things about this movie are: the sets, joan cusack, robin williams, robin wright (with a texan accent), the writing, and the novelty fake vomit scene (it's hysterical!).

Some scenes are too long, but in general I think this is a really original, fun, movie. There are a couple of swear words, but otherwise it was perfect for watching with my kids as well.
