Rating: Summary: Ooomp-ha! Review: What a joy! How nice to attend a movie with no bad language, no nudity and no gratuitous sexual situations. Can't wait for this to be on DVD so I can share it with my 10-year old daughter. Although I didn't grow up greek, I grew up in an ethnic Polish-American home and could really relate to many of Toula's predicaments! Nia Vardalos and John Corbett were outstanding, and Michael Considine and his Windex bottle...well, I wouldn't want to spoil it. Even Joey Fatone was great...he just fit in the background as a cousin and was very natural....This flick had better receive some Oscar nominations!! Get to your local theater FAST or get it on DVD once it comes out! Ooompah!!
Rating: Summary: If you want a good laugh, this is it! Review: At the beginning of the movie, Nia Vardalos (Toula) is a plain, 30-plus young Greek woman, whose parents despair of her ever finding a nice Greek man to marry. They are so entrenched in their own ethnicity that imitations of Greek statues adorn their lawn and Toula's father can prove that every word in the English language originally comes from Greek. Nia persuades her parents to let her attend college and she has a physical transformation which leads to a romance with an engaging Anglo teacher, played by John Corbett. There is a predictable clash of cultures when the two young lovers meet one another's families and the working out of these problems is the meat of the film. Toula vacillates between love and embarrassment for her large family who talk too loud, eat too much, and get into each other's business. If you need a good laugh and a "feel-good" movie, this one's for you!
Rating: Summary: If you don't love this movie...You need a sense of humor Review: Putting the facts on the table... This is one terrific movie. Very entertaining and brings out the best in every families faults and perfections. The originality of the actors themselves are superb. If there could be a sixth star I would give it!!!
Rating: Summary: Mixed Marriages: Heaven and Hell on Earth! Review: Let me join the chorus of approval for what started out as a small movie and ended up, deservedly, a huge hit. I'm from a mixed marriage, Italian (mother) and New England WASP (father). The only difference here is that the materfamilias half is Greek. Small difference. The huge difference is always how emotional, loud and overwhelming the ethnic end is and how restrained, cool, controlled and underwhelming the WASP end is. This film captures that difference perfectly. It is safe to say that the big attraction for the WASP end of the couple is getting away from the emotionally stultifying world he inhabits. John Corbett (from "Sex and the City") is marvelous as Ian in that role. Actually, this role isn't very different from that tv role but he does that kind of role extremely well and you couldn't ask for a more attractive, beguiling leading man. He may lack range as an actor but that's not a problem here. Nia Vardalos, the leading lady, comes to film from comedy plus she also wrote the screenplay. She is wonderful as the ethnic daughter who has to deal with her volatile family upon announcing that she is going to marry a non-Greek. All hell breaks out. Great as Corbett and Vardalos are, this movie is almost stolen right underneath them by Michael Constantine as the father. He is the family member who has the hardest time accepting a mixed marriage and he is both hilarious and touching every step of the way. The rest of the supporting cast is all top notch as well.
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Greek Wedding Review: This was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. So refreshing and enjoyable. I left the theater thinking the my $8.50 was very well spent. I laughed out loud more times than I can remember and have recommended the movie to friends and will see it again and buy it when it comes out on video!
Rating: Summary: Tasteful fun Review: Cinderella of sorts. A young Greek woman is ready to face life alone as a waitress in her family's restaurant until she meets an attractive young man. She changes almost everything just to be with him--and he does the same. What makes this movie better than most in the romantic comedy genre is the fact that it has does not rely heavily on sexual humor. The most explicit lines are spoken in Greek with those silly subtitles at the bottom. The final sequence is a little disappointing, but the rest is perfect. Deserves a Best Picture nomination.
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL Review: I had the pleasure of watching this movie on the airplane before I heard so much about it, I loved it, coming from an Italian family I can relate. My son is getting married in May and I called him right after I watched it and told him he and Marissa had to go see it. It's so funny and down to earth. The characters were all excellant and their performances were outstanding. I couldn't stop laughing and I'm defintely going to see it again. If you haven't seen it, you musssssssssst go.
Rating: Summary: A great big, warm hug for people who love movies Review: This film was amazing: it was funny, it was sweet, it was touching...it was wonderful. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is a great big, warm hug from Nia Vardalos/Joel Zwick/Rita Wilson to everyone who loves movies. If you enjoy good, sweet, smartly written romantic comedies with a nearly perfect ensemble cast, you cannot do better than MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. I laughed so hard I nearly hurt myself, as did the rest of the sold out theater. Highest possible recommendation: it's that good.
Rating: Summary: Charming Review: I really loved this movie. It's the story of a Greek woman's romance with an American man. She knows her family isn't going to approve. It's actually about more than that, too. It's really about the way Toula learns to accept and appreciate her family. I can really relate to this movie. I, too, am European, and I have a big, boisterous family like Toula. I thought the characters were hilarious, if a bit stereotypical at times. Actually, they were more true to life, at least based on my experience, than some people realize. In fact, in some ways I thought that Ian's (John Corbett) parents were more stereotypical than Toula's. I thought the actors did a really good job of bringing depth to their portrayals. I especially liked Lanie Kazan, Michael Constantine, Nia Vardalos, and Andrea Martin. The movie just had a very sweet way about it. I loved the bits of Toula's brother trying to trick John Corbett's character into saying inappropriate things in Greek. I think the one thing I didn't like about the movie is that the conflict was too easily resolved. The film could've had a bit more depth. Overall, though, I think it was meant to be a "feel good" movie, and in that sense, it succeeded. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it. In fact, I liked it so much I may even buy it when it comes out on video, which is something I rarely do.
Rating: Summary: movie bad Review: This movie is the reason I couldn't give 1 star to the Royal Tennenbaums. While both are painfully unfunny "comedies" about family life, Tennenbaums at least is a bit imaginitive. This is like watching a long, bad comedy routine by one of those untalented, solipsistic thirty somethings that always seem to end up plugging up the stand-up blocks on the Comedy Channel. How pathetic and childish! This movie would make a bad episode of Doctor Katz. Plus it co-stars the "Ford Guy", the worst corporate spokesman in recent memory, as the great WASP Prince. Ugly! I'd like to say that this movie was insulting and unrealistic, but going by it's popularity, I guess I'm the one being unrealistic because people are really this shallow. Even when they're trying their best to express themselves. Sad.
