Rating: Summary: The Best Yet.... Review: I have never watched a movie where everyone who has seen it raves about it as much as I have. The old rules for movie-going apply here: you never look at your watch, could care less about the time, don't leave to refill your popcorn and laugh out loud, strongly and rather heartily too. There are more out-loud laughs and real-life situations in this movie than in any other film I've seen to date. Truly a perfect movie for anyone who has friends or family that are real people. And you can utterly understand why both Toula and Ian belong together and how they complete each others' longing for "normalacy". An absolutely brilliant and adorable film!
Rating: Summary: Great!!!! Review: This was a very good and extremely funny movie. It is very true to nthe Greeks and I could definetly relate. The directors captured a lot of true and funny aspects of a Greek wedding and family.
Rating: Summary: A Greek-American reviewer Review: ...Yes, the Greek characters are exaggerated versions of a real Greek family, but that's what makes it a comedy! The movie is made by a Greek-Canadian, and the Greek community is completely fine with the movie, and they love it, so don't act like you're taking the moral high ground here. Ok, now that's out of the way.....This film, albeit at times just a sappy love story, is the first film for Greek-Americans (if you're not Greek don't worry, you will still love the film for the endearing characters and comedy). My mother and father who immigrated to the US from Greece years ago, saw the film, and told me what they thought. My mother said "It was very funny. But I don't understand the windex, Greeks don't do that" and I replied "Mom, a lot of the humor was for Greek-Americans" which brings me to the description of my Greek family. My father AND mother, and I'm not making this up, think that Rubbing Alcohol is the end all be all cure to all ailments. (Ok not windex, but what's up with that?) Greek children after growing up and getting married, customarily live in homes close to their parents, sometimes as neighbors (not always, but case in point, my sister and her family lives down the street from my parents). My father espouses the proud Greek history of philosophy and of Greek language, making the same claims as the Greek father in the film made, claims such as most of the English language is derivative of Greek. My father owns a hotel called the "Olympic Inn". I grew up in a community of blond haired, blue eyed kids making fun of the Greek food my mother packed me for lunch when I went to grammar school. I also went to "Greek school" (which despite what one Amazon reviewer who gave this movie a negative rating thought, Greek school is not some kind of ethnocentric indoctrination, it is merely a school usually held at the Greek church to teach Greek-American kids how to speak Greek). This film truly was very identifiable with Greek-Americans such as myself, where growing up in America meant a clash of cultures but at the same time, a love for the Greek history and the American heritage of democracy and philosophy borrowed from ancient Greece and fine-tuned. Despite the drawbacks to an overbearing family, I can't help but feel the strengh I can draw from it, which this film captures. Greek-American means, proud to be Greek, and proud to be American. Both countries have had a rich culture and proud history, as one touching part of this film demonstrates, where grandmother and mother share memories of their past living in Greece, the years of war, the after effects of Turkish, then later, Italian, then German, then Commmunist aggression. The Greek spirit through all of it's war-torn history, was not broken. And the same goes for the American spirit, always in threat from foreign aggression, but never faltering in the face of danger. This is the Greek-American heritage, and this is why I love this film so much, this is the first and ony film so far to acknowledge the Greek-American presence in American culture. Thank you Nia Vardelos for a touching and endearing film and getting this to the silver screen. And to those of you who loved the film and are not Greek, thank you for experiencing something I and many millions of Greek-American kids experienced. You saw my childhood, you saw my family, and you saw the Greek spirit. I hope you can find something to identify with in this film with your family. If you haven't seen the film, see it, and buy the DVD.
Rating: Summary: BIG FAT LAUGHS Review: This movie is the most fun movie to watch, wether you are watching it with your friends, mother, father, children, or even the inlaws. It is laugh out loud funny, and any person who has the oppurtunity to view it should. You won't be dissappointed. With more than 200 million dollars at the box office, this DVD is bound to be Amazing. Up and coming star Nia Vardalos, deserves an Oscar, or atleast a nomination.
Rating: Summary: The funniest since THE PARTY.. A MUST SEE Review: This movie is HELARIOUS, so well done, i could see it again and again and it would still make me laugh. I bet someone will start using Windex for everything (not just windows)!! It is a must and I surely want to own it.
Rating: Summary: The Best Movie of 2002 Review: This movie was by far the best movie I saw in 2002! I recommended it to all my friends and family. This movie is a clean, wholesome, heartwarming, hillarious movie that most can relate to who have meddling family members. Go see it if you haven't! My mom, aunt, girlfriends and even my grandma loved this movie. I plan to pre-order a few DVD copies as Christmas gifts... and one for myself! "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is on top of my favorite movie list.
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Greek Wedding Review: Fat, homely girl turns into a swan, and meets Prince Charming. The only problem with this match made in Heaven, is that the two families are from Hell. Not really..hers: huge Greek family zillions of cousins, uncles, aunts, all Greek and passionate and opinionated, touchy-kissy, very religious........his: English, cool, sedate, non-demonstrative, upper-class, good taste, and athiest. What is a couple in love to do? End up in bed, of course (before the wedding, which is in some doubt anyway). The narrow-mindness and stubborness of the father, the manipulative planning of the aunt and mother, the overly agressive brother, and the pushy, well-meaning cousins, and the demented grandmother .....were.....well, let's be honest: Reminding us of our very own families!! Eventually everything works out, but getting here is very funny. I laughed all the way through this movie. It was pleasant, entertaining and funny......isn't that what movies are supposed to be?
Rating: Summary: Big Fat Stereotypes! Review: Warning to those not of Greek descent. As a child of immigrant parents, I know the world of this film intimately and can thus justifiably say without reservation that it distorts all the genuine aspects of the Greek-American experience in favor of cheap laughs due to easy ethnic stereotypes and standard Hollywood cliches. Many of the central characters are not played by Greeks, and their portrayals come off as phony as their accents, especially Andrea Martin. In fact, almost the entire movie fails to capture Greekness in any real sense, with the only exception of the hard-headed father's cold relationship with his artistically inclined son. Forget this movie and see MONSOON WEDDING instead: it is everything that MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING should have been.
Rating: Summary: A must see Review: This is the movie to see if you want to laugh and have a good feeling after seeing it. I work in a Movie Theatre the film has been playing in our house since the end of July and is still going strong. I'm buying it myself as soon as its released.
Rating: Summary: Clean movies rock! Review: This is wonderful story of a Greek girl finding true love! The quirky humor in this delightful story makes it a winner. In a year of blockbuster action and intense drama it is wonderful that "the little movie that could" has done so well. Toula's family makes the movie worth it. I will never look at a bottle of Windex the same again! This is a film you could sit down and watch with the entire family and not feel like you are compromising. Now let's just pray that Hollywood hears our cry for quality, clean movies. Don't miss this one!
