Rating: Summary: Overhyped to be sure... but it had potential Review: I rather enjoyed Nia Vardolos. No she isnt Julia Roberts or Meryl Streep but I thought her believeable and downright likeable. I enjoyed, up to a point, the family issues, oddities and excesses. I felt that John Corbett and Vardolos had good chemistry but his character was not very believeable... totally one-dimensional and weak. She'd have done as well with a blow-up doll. This isnt a deep thought-provoking film but then its not supposed to be... its a romantic comedy. With that in mind, in my opinion this flick's main problem was a lack of conflict or a twist that I really cared about. Even the family conflict left me hanging and wondering "umm ok, where's the climax?" I waited right up until the scrolling credits and it never came. I was a bit peeved that I actually let myself get persuaded by the dreaded hype-machine to see this. HBO on a late restless night would've been the best place for this one.
Rating: Summary: Lots of Laughs Review: This is a very funny movie. We laughed all through it.
Rating: Summary: A Bollywood re-hash, but enjoyable Review: Before I am confronted with brickbats and bullets, lemme put forth my argument as to why this movie isn't really what it is thought to be....VERY FUNNY AND UNIQUE!!!The movie is a typical Bollywood saga of an-outsider-trying-to-fit-in-with-girl's-family, which has been recycled a thousand times in the Indian movie industry. Yes, MBFGW does lack originality. What is unique is putting spotlight on the Greek community, something that has not been done before, and yet the spotlight somewhat fails in terms of lumens. One never gets to know more quirky Greek idiosyncrasies, apart from strong ethnocentricity. To summarize, this is a good movie, no doubt. A refreshing change from the rest of the crop, but definitely fails to generate more laughs and in the end, fails to live up to the hype
Rating: Summary: Fun, lighthearted and romantic Review: This may not be an academy award winner, but it is certainly an enjoyable movie. At this time, it is really nice to watch something that is lighthearted, funny and romantic. I watched it twice and the 2nd time, I thought it was even better. If you are looking for a deep, philosphical, violent movie, this isn't it. If you are looking to just relax and watch a nice movie and enjoy it without being upset or depressed at the end, this is it! This is simply (and well done) a fun and feel-good movie. So enjoy!
Rating: Summary: great film! Review: You do not have to be greek in order to enjoy this movie....i found most of the characters to be very funny and i was able to relate to Toula, Nia Vardalos' character....this is a great film to watch with your family! :-)
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Stupid Movie Review: I totally agree with another reviewer that the success of this movie has got to be one of the biggest mysteries of the century. I was so excited to see it after all the hype. I wanted to like it! I tried. But I was sorely dissapointed in it. First of all, Nia Vardalos is a mediocre actress. The constant blank look on her face throughout the movie just got on my nerves as did the way she would move her eyes from side to side like Jack Black's character on "Shallow Hal" (cuckoo! cuckoo!). The chemistry between her and John Corbett was non-existant. The windex thing got old. The fact that "Ian" had to alter his complete identity in order to be included in the family was ridiculous. Yes, there were a few laughs . . . but that was it. This movie doesn't hold a candle to Moonstruck, When Harry Met Sally, or any other great film that comes to mind. It is an insult to intelligent people!
Rating: Summary: Charming and Expert But Extremely Slight Review: There is a lot to like about MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, a well-made romantic comedy that presents the story of Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), a young Chicago woman of Greek ethnicity who must overcome family opposition when she decides to marry an upscale yuppie WASP. The cast is expert; there are quite a few belly-laughs and chuckles aplenty; and the script is witty and plays with stereotypes without ever descending to mean-spiritedness. But perhaps the single most likeable thing about GREEK WEDDING is the fact that the romantic leads look like real people instead of the Ken and Barbie actors so typically found in this sort of romantic comedy. That is indeed a real joy, and I suspect it is at the heart of what has drawn so many to the film. I do indeed indeed recommend MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. But I also offer a slight caution: unless you are a die-hard romantic comedy fan, you might do better to rent the film before you actually go to the expense of purchasing it. It is expertly done; it is charming; and I certainly look forward to seeing more from Nia Vardalos in the future. But all that said, I found GREEK WEDDING extremely slight, and do not think I will revisit it in the future. I found it enjoyable for an evening, but nothing more. The DVD package, by the way, is as slight as the film. There is extremely little in the way of bonus material, and if your decision re VHS vs. DVD rests on bonus material I would suggest you purchase the VHS; you will miss nothing in terms of extras.
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Reception Review: This is certainly one of those movies that a couple or even the whole family can laugh at loud at together. My wife doesn't watch that many movies she is always busy, so when she sits down with me and laughs at one I know it must be pretty funny. She thoroughly enjoyed this one as well as myself. Is it a little ethicly demeaning? Maybe, but no more so than all the other comedies. Besides this movie pokes fun at much more than just greeks. Besides I learned that all words are derived from Greek words and to use Windex on pimples, cuts, scratches...Don't like it? Tough! Most people do and so they are making a TV series.
Rating: Summary: Too much Fatty material Review: How My Big Fat Greek Wedding fared so well in the box office and why everyone thinks this movie is one of the best romantic comedies ever made is beyond me. I have sat perplexed after watching this film, wondering what is so good about it. I still don't know. So the movie rings a familiar bell for many people. It certainly didn't ring one for me. Of course, I'm not Greek, so I couldn't relate to too much of what was happening. The characters seemed flat and not dynamic at all. The only real character was the lead, and she still wasn't all that interesting. When I don't find any of the characters titillating, it makes for a boring movie. And that's exactly what we have here. There were some comedic moments, and that's what saved the movie. Even though the script was supposed to be original, I have seen many movies similar as this that were way above the quality of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Maybe I'm being too hard on it, but I just didn't find the appeal in this movie that everyone else did. 3 Stars
Rating: Summary: A Perfect Little Movie Review: This is a movie about a Greek family. It could very well be a movie about an Italian, Hungarian, Irish, Polish, Spanish or any other ethnic family. Toula Portokalos is the quiet responsible daughter working in her father's business (the stereotypical Greek Diner). Plain, aging (all of 30 years....but "old"), she embarks upon a journey of metamorphasis, ditching the thick glasses, changing the hair, using a bit of makeup, returning to school, she transforms into a graceful woman, ripe to marry a respectable Greek man and make Greek babies. However, Toula and life have other plans. She meets the quintessential "white bread" American. Their romance and marriage is a delightful exploration of cultures and family traditions. The movie is extremely well written and acted with an undertone of subtlety which belies its frenetic (yet charmingly accurate) ethnic characterizations. It is a simple, charming film that captures the heart of any immigrant or first generation American family. It reminded me of the Barry Levinson film AVALON in many respects. Although that film was more of a drama, both share a wonderful understanding of the ethnic American experience.
