Rating: Summary: Passable, but not all that great Review: My wife wanted to watch this movie, so we did. Both of us were underwhelmed. You know where it's going from the get-go, and it gets there by the most predicatble path. The attraction between Toula and Ian is never explained; he's just a plug-in "dream guy" who falls into her life. In fact, his role is so trivial that John Corbett isn't even listed in the 15 "top billed" cast members in the IMDB description of the movie! Toula's large, boisterous family is likable enough, but there are so many of them that nobody is really well developed as a character. Anyone who grew up in a large ethnic-American family (Greek, Italian, Polish, or whatever) -- or dated/married someone from such a family --will probably enjoy it. So will women over 30 who have been less than lucky in love. If you're not in either of those categories, you'll probably find yourself fidgeting as the movie wears on.
Rating: Summary: movie watcher Review: like other reviews, i thought this movie was entertaining, but not worth buying or renting. i don't understand why people are so "gung ho" on this one. i would of rather seen it on cable.
Rating: Summary: GREAT FUN Review: One certainly does not have to be Greek to enjoy this wonderful comedy! It's one hilarious moment after another! Don't miss it!
Rating: Summary: The word love is of Greek orgin... Review: Gus Portokalos is very proud of his Greek background and he is willing to teach everyone about his ethnic background, especially the origin of words. In addition, he has raised his daughters and son to be well educated in Greek history and what comes from Greece. His daughter Toula is 30 years old and she is supposed marry a good Greek man and have many Greek children that can carry on the Greek traditions according to Gus. However, Toula has a different idea of what she wants to do--she wants to go to college and get an education. In the process, she meets Ian Miller, a non-Greek man who is from an opposite type of family where silence is merry. This presents some problems for their relationship, since it infuriates Toula's father. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a warm and humorous film that in the end provides a happy ending as well as food for the mind.
Rating: Summary: Great Start For Nia, But Too General of a Plotline Review: My Big Fat Greek Wedding is about Toula, a misfit girl from a large Greek family who is trying to make something out of her life at the ripe age of thirty. It is a typical romance film; outcast finds love and realizes that she was really loved all along. This is an excellent start for Nia Vardalos, though it was too much of a typical storyline.
Rating: Summary: Great Movie , Bad DVD Review: Movie: A 30 year old Greek women, is part of a huge family of greeks. The father, a very prideful greek, can find the greek root of any word,(i.e kimono) and loves Windex. The main character, Toula, is somewhat of an out cast from the rest of her family, she is not married and doesn't seem to what to. One day while working in her father's resturant, she see's the man of her dreams, Ian. So eventully they meet, fall in love, and start going out under the cover that she is taking a pottery class. Since Ian is a non-greek, her very ethnic family would not approve, most of all, her father. So eventully her family finds out about their love, and finally after several tries to get her to fall in love with another Greek, the give in and must accept the fact that they are getting married. You can guess the rest. From her on, it gets funnier and funnier, until the heartwarming ending. The reason I dont give it five stars, is the fact there are a few parts where it can get slow enough, to the point of uninterest. Otherwise, if you haven't seen this movie, go and rent it, if you love it go out and buy it! 4 out 5 stars DVD: Although the picture and sound quality are fine, for such a high grossing movie, it shure got a terrible DVD. All that is on it, is cast bios, and commentary. It made five hundred million dollars in theaters alone(not counting DVD and VHS sales) I'm shure they can spare a couple million bucks for a better DVD, which would only make them more! Wait for a better edition to come out. 2 1/2 out of 5
Rating: Summary: Dismissed as an "amiable comedy" by the New York Times... Review: this thoroughly delightful comedy has gone on to be a big hit, primarily because viewers end up liking the characters and feeling good at the end. The Times made the same mistake back in the sixties with "What's New Pussycat?" and had to issue a revised review. It should do the same here. Well worth the time and money for anyone other than the most humorless "intellectual."
Rating: Summary: Decent film; lackluster dvd Review: Although this wasn't one of the best films of the year, it was clean, and it had it's moments. The Digital Video camera work isn't grainy, and the film, although it doesn't look as good as a real film, looks far better than my camcorder. This film isn't screamingly funny, and the running "Windex" joke is annoying after a while. But there are four or five things in this film that are absolutely hilarious. Nia Verados does a good job, but the best performqnce is from her dad. Of all of the high-grossing, low-budget films there are, this one looks the most normal. I don't see why it did so well at the box office (if it wasn't low-budget, it probably would have done a lot worse). Maybe not. Maybe people were just telling there friends what to see. This is the highest grossing film never to reach #1. The dvd should be better, since most people think this is one of the funniest films they've ever seen. Although it has commentary, and the option between full-screen and widescreen, I would have liked to see deleted scenes or a making-of-documentary. Thank you for taking the time to read my review and feel free to leave me a helpful/not helpful feedback. God Bless America!
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Greek Wedding Review: I donno......Did I miss the point of this movie....I meant most of it was pointless jokes poking fun of the people who aren't greek....I personally didn't find it amusing.....the old grandma did get me going a few times but that's about it.....I don't think it's worth your time and the movie isn't all it's hyped up 2 be
