Rating: Summary: OK for cuddling your wife/girlfriend... Review: ... but you do wonder when the film is going to start and then its over ... ok Greek people are different ......would have been better with more Turks! ...funny in little snippets but not rib-tickling ... a sweet film but not a patch on Strictly Ballroom
Rating: Summary: Not For Everyone Review: This movie was cute, but not one that everyone would like. I mean there are a few funny parts in it but not my fav. I know some little kids that copy movies and this is not a movie that you would want kids to copy. Its a good film for anyone older then 9 probley. I mean little kids could watch it, its not that bad. Engoy!=) P.S. You should see the movie!
Rating: Summary: I waited for this & what a let down Review: I rarely go out to the movies these days, but I watch the film reviews on TV & listen to what most people say. If I get a good report, I do one of 2 things when the DVD comes out: rent the film if the plot is questionable (normally a R rating) or take a gamble & buy the DVD to play on my better than avg 5.1 audio/video system. I heard nothing but great things about this movie & being Eastern Orthodox (not Greek; there is such a thing) wanted to experience a family rated movie about a non-American family. Want a let down, the typical plot: shy homely old maid feed up with family gets a make over & falls in love with the man her family fears most. Then there were strange things that would never happen in a Greek church: 1. Why did the Aunt rub oil on the soon-to-be groom? That's the priest's job. 2. Why during the wedding did the father walk down the bride? That's in the western church, the bride "Should" meet the groom in the entryway, then walk down with the priest. The one & only highlight is the father with his magic Windex & references to "Everything came from the Greek". Others things started out funny but went too far; I love the screens where the the bride-to-be kisses the groom-to-be good bye every night in the car & it takes them longer each night to leave, but after that why the references to pre-marriage sex & asking for her hand in marriage when it looks like they...well, its all innuendo. Sad to say I gave this DVD away to another person that told me they thought it was a great movie.
Rating: Summary: This one's at least a 6!! Review: This little tiny HBO film turned into the biggest romantic comedy of the year. Doesn't that say it all? In order for a little film that no major studio picked up to rake in that kind of box office bucks, there has to be something to it, right? YES! There's quite a bit to it actually. I've seen just about every romantic comedy you can think of, so a unique one REALLY grabs me, and this one grabbed me and didn't let go! First, who is Nia Vardalos and why haven't we seen her before? She was FANTASTIC. I have to confess that I was expecting a hack acting job because I heard that this was her creation, so she clearly wasn't a seasoned actress. Not the case! Vardalos gives a convincing and endearing performance as Toulah, a frumpy Greek woman who is conspicuously lacking a man at 30, when most Greek girls have married and spawned at least a couple kids. Her parents, and the rest of her huge quirky family, also give great performances as overly-involved relatives who participate in every little aspect of Toulah's life. John Corbett is the love interest and the other main character in this film, and WOW, he is so perfect in this role. Not only is he adorable, he totally looks the part of a nice, sensitive, down-to-earth HS lit. teacher. As the story goes, Toulah is man-less, and therefore childless at the ripe old age of 30. Her parents are none to pleased with her progress to this end. Toulah works in her parents' Greek restaurant until she gets a yearning to do something different with her life. She winds up winning Dad's approval to go to college for computers, so she can work at her aunt's travel agency. Along with this major change, Toulah also dabbles with makeup and hairstyles to make herself more attractive, and to fit in, which is something she never did as a child. Toulah lands the job at her aunt's travel agency and this is where the Toulah-Ian (Corbett) romance buds, much to the dismay of Toulah's parents because Ian is not Greek. The culture clash that ensues lends much hilarity to the film. Ultimately, romance wins out, as you might imagine given the title, but the real story is not the wedding so much as the events leading up to it. This movie is fun to watch over and over. The DVD could have had more extras, but the movie alone is worth the purchase.
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Greek Wedding DVD Review: Over and over again this DVD has been watched with friends and family. I just can not get enough of it. Last summer I went to a wedding reception that looked similar to the one on the DVD. The commentary was very well done. Tula's aunt is hilarious. I also enjoy the part while Tula fiance' is babtized. I like the hope the DVD brings to young single women. It does not matter how old you are when you get married. Just be careful who you pick because you will have to live with them the rest of your life.
Rating: Summary: Should appeal to everyone Review: This movie was hysterical. I was laughing so much I missed some of the lines. Nia Vardalos is a genius screenwriter, managed to capture so much of the "ethnicity gap." Reminded me of my own wedding in Italy. And good for Tom Hanks' wife, Rita Wilson, for recognizing what a gem this was (originally a play). This is good-humored poking fun at all the differences between different ethnic groups and how we learn tolerance by trying to appreciate different expressions of love and warmth. The performances, especially by Michael Constantine, are fabulous. Something to be enjoyed over and over.
Rating: Summary: Now This Is A Movie Review: I absolutely love this movie. It has universal appeal and speaks to every culture. It was insightful and well-written. The actors and actress in this movie were excellent especially my personal favorite Lanie Kazan who's role like Nia was outstanding. This is a must own DVD.
Rating: Summary: Hysterical Review: My husband and I saw this movie in the movie theatre and afterwards he said to me, I didn't realize I married into a Greek family. I said, "use some windex on that sunburn" and "no, you idiot, my Irish family is just as bad." It was hysterical! Funny thing is - we went to Greece for our honeymoon.
Rating: Summary: Witty and hilarious as well as refreshingly original Review: Being of mixed race myself, my family resembles a lot in this movie. My mother's large, loving and loud Hispanic family resembles Toula's large, loving and loud Greek family, while my dad's small, conventional, quiet Caucasian family represents Ian's small, conventional, quiet Caucasian family. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was delightful and charming. Full of wit, humor, and a very upbeat, positive attitude, this is the ideal movie to watch when you're in the mood for a big smile.
Rating: Summary: Good Clean Greek Fun Review: I love that a movie can be this entertaining and still have a PG rating. The story is simple, Toula is Greek from a family steeped in tradition and she breaks from that. First by wanting an education and second by not wanting to work at the family business. So naturally it follws that she wants to marry a man who is **gasp** NOT Greek. The movie is funny and vastly entertaining because of the very talented actors who have superb comic timing. Nia Vardalos and John Corbett and a host of other fine actors do a great job of telling every bride's story and all of us who've had that big, fat, family made, wedding will certainly connect with it. This IS a must see movie, but rent it before buying it. While this is an excellent movie, it's not a story that hasn't been told before or won't be told again. You may find that having seen it once you don't really need to see it again. Besides, the story continues every Sunday night on CBS.
