Summary: The most personal one
Review: John Hughes's most personal film is also one of his most underrated. A smart, lyrical journey into the mind of a burgeoning yuppie who find himself an expectant father. Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern are wonderful as the new parents, and Alec Baldwin provides a funny supporting role as Bacon's friend who is following a different path in life. Don't miss the end credits as a host of cameos (mostly friends of Hughes) think of names for the infant.

Hopefully this DVD will include the "wordless" trailer for the film not seen since the first pressing of the FERRIS BUELLER videotape in 1987.

Summary: Mysterious symbols?
Review: Ok, I understand the male and female symbols used on the movie logo.
Those represent the male and female viewpoints of the main two characters.
They are the traditional "Mars" and "Venus" symbols representing masculinity and femininity.

I also understand the last symbol representing "infinity", a never-ending loop symbolizing an ideal marriage that will last forever. Or maybe the propagation of "eternal life" by the offspring of the parents carrying on their genes into eternity.

But what is to be made of the star and dagger symbol???

Are these symbols somehow representing a conflict of religious values?
(The Star of David representing Judaism and a cross representing Christianity)

I haven't seen the movie in years but I don't remember a conflict in religious beliefs being part of the plot.

Summary: Love, Marriage, Babies !
Review: One couple's journey from getting married to starting a family. Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern play the young couple just starting out. Very realistically portrayed, very "suburbia", and very surreal in places as well. Bacon and McGovern play well off each other. Alec Baldwin is even here, playing Kevin Bacon's roving Romeo of a best friend.

Love the scenes featuring the in laws and the neighbors, too... the block party scene is priceless ! John Hughes does it again, but this outing is more "grown up" than his previous teen angst/high school-slice-of-life films such as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" or "The Breakfast Club".

I have like many others been searching for the soundtrack on CD but alas it's unavailable. Too bad, because there are some great songs here including Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" which will have you grabbing for that box of tissue during the scene which it is featured.

Summary: Straight From NYC
Review: Saw this movie repeatedly and I still love it. Be sure to watch the credits at the end when all the 'Cheers' cast are trying to name the baby! Ultimately, they pick the cool name. . .Chris.

Summary: Loved this movie the first time, it's even better NOW!
Review: Saw this movie when it first came out. But now, with a baby of our own on the way, I had to buy it and add it to my collection of fun movies! I think it's just great and captures the humourous and sometimes strange ways we experience the changes in our lives. Makes a great shower gift!

Summary: Finally on DVD! (Soundtrack Information Below)
Review: She's Having A Baby has always been a favorite movie of mine. Alas, I didn't see it in theaters but got it on video and wore my copy out from repeat viewings. Finally the DVD has arrived, but with the exception of a trailer there's nothing as far as Special Features, which is pretty disappointing. The film is letterboxed to it's proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio and looks just great. The sound is also good. Would've liked a John Hughes audio commentary like the one he did for the Ferris Bueller's Day Off DVD, but no such luck.

As for the movie itself, I think it's wonderful. A sweet and honest interpretation of growing up into adulthood and living with the decisions that you make. Since Kevin Bacon plays a writer named Jefforson (Jake) Briggs, we get to view his imagination thru certain scenes when he's sort of daydreaming, that come across very comically (like the lawnmower ballet). My favorite is when Kristi (Elizabeth McGovern) tells him "I stopped taking the pill three months ago", to which he sits up and starts screaming, imagining himself on a fastmoving traincar in a straitjacket, crashing into a brick wall. If those visuals don't explain his anxiety I don't know what would. That's the fun of the movie.

Everyone's talking about the wonderful Soundtrack that is out of print. This is because it was owned by I.R.S. Records and they went out of business many years ago and no one has bothered to pick up the rights to reissue it. I feel lucky, since I bought it on cassette and CD back in the early 90s. But if you really want to find one I suggest you try an online auction house such as ebay. They always have copies of the soundtrack to sell.

I always feel cheated when I buy a Paramount DVD because they are so expensive and usually only have a trailer as a bonus. Luckily I got this one dirt cheap at an auction, but even so they should'nt be charging us an arm and a leg for "movie only" DVDs when other studios (like Warner Bros.) sell "Special Edition" DVDs at cheaper prices. If you feel the same way as me I hope you'll write to Paramount and share your disappointment.

I hope these remarks were helpful.

Summary: The Married Life
Review: She's Having A Baby was director John Hughes' first attempt an "adult" comedy. Although he was the screenwriter on several movies that concentrated on adults, he had only directed the Brat Pack classics that focused on teenage life. The movie is told from the point of view (and narrated) by Jake Briggs who is charmingly played by Kevin Bacon. He is a would be writer who seems to get stuck in a life and career that he's not sure he wants. The film starts off with his marriage to Christie and follows them through the travails of married life and the fact that we all have to grow up and take on the responsibilities of adulthood. Christie is played delightfully by Elizabeth McGovern. She adds the right amount of compassion and caring to role. Jake's best friend Davis (played by Alec Baldwin) is still living the wild life and he tries to convince Jake that Christie is holding him back. In the end, Jake realizes that the life he has is special and that his wife and new baby are more important than anything else. The film contains alot funny site gags, like a lawn mower ballet dream sequence and the leads make a believable couple. The birth sequence near the end is a way too melodramatic and shamelessly tries to pull at your heartstrings. Overall, it is a very enjoyable and funny movie.
